...Strong Southeast Gales and High Waves on Monday...

.Active couple days across the Great Lakes as we deal with first deal 
with elevated northerly flow behind a cold front today. Winds will 
gust to near 30 knots into the afternoon before high pressure builds 
into the region allowing winds to relax. Small Craft Advisories 
remain in effect for the Lake Huron nearshore zones and outer 
Saginaw Bay for the first half of the day. After a brief lull in 
winds due to that high pressure system, a stronger low will track 
through the northern Great Lakes Monday night into Tuesday with a 
clipper racing across the central Great Lakes Tuesday. A series of 
cold fronts and troughs will bring several opportunities for gale 
force winds into the mid week period. The first of which will occur 
Monday and the inherited Gale Watch will be upgraded to a Gale 
Warning with this forecast.

extreme wave conditions across Lake Huron. Outer Saginaw Bay and the 
southern Lake Huron nearshore areas will also be strongly affected 
as southeast wind ramps up quickly around sunrise and builds to 
gusts around 45 knots over the central open waters by afternoon. The 
long southeast fetch across the lake drives waves into the 15-20 ft 
range with a few max waves over 20 ft possible. The associated low 
pressure system then exits eastern Lake Superior Monday evening and 
leaves weaker west flow across the central Great Lakes through most 
of Tuesday. The next low pressure system moves through the southern 
Great Lakes by Tuesday evening and reinforces northwest wind across 
the region. A short period of entry level gales is possible 
Wednesday which will be evaluated for headline potential in later 
updates. Northwest wind diminishes but maintains cold air across the 
region during the late week period.

gales and extreme wave conditions across Lake Huron. Saginaw Bay and 
the Lake Huron nearshore areas will also be strongly affected as 
southeast wind peaks late this afternoon into early this evening 
before the flow veers to the southwest and weakens with the passage 
of low pressure and an attendant cold front. Persistent gusts to 
near 45 knots can be expected late today over central and southern 
Lake Huron with a few gusts approaching storm force for a few hours.
The long southeast fetch across the lake will drive waves into the 
15-20 foot range with a few maximum waves over 20 feet possible.

The associated low pressure system will then exit eastern Lake 
Superior late this evening and leave weaker west flow across the 
central Great Lakes through most of Tuesday. The next low pressure 
system will move through the southern Great Lakes by Tuesday evening 
and reinforce northwest wind across the region. A short period of

The associated low pressure system will then exit eastern Lake

Robust surface high pressure rises over the northern Great Lakes has
driven a cold front southward through the forecast area. Satellite
imagery shows confirms the aggressive progression of post frontal
stratus down into the forecast area. Good call was made earlier to
evolve the forecast to MVFR stratus. Look and structure of the RAP
soundings remains overwhelmingly one of stratus.  MVFR stratus will
likely prove pesky and take a good portion of the morning to erode.

For DTW...Postfrontal stratus will ooze over the terminal overnight.
Uncertainty exists with exact timing.

DISCUSSION...

Mid level shortwave swinging southeastward through Ontario today
will bring height across the central lakes and push an associated
cold front through Michigan tonight. Subtle warm air advection will
be ushered in under light southwest flow ahead of this front. This
will help bring afternoon high temperatures to around the mid 40s
for portions of lower Michigan. Lingering clouds across the
Thumb/Saginaw Valley and to the south along eastern portions I-69
through the late morning will help mitigate a larger temperature
response in these areas resulting in afternoon highs mostly in the
upper 30s and low 40s. Moisture quality will be lacking as the cold
front approaches this evening with almost no moisture advection
arriving with the southwest flow today. The only moisture for this
front to interact with will be in the limited moisture in the
boundary layer trapped under an inversion. This may bring a
transient opportunity for some pockets of drizzle/freezing drizzle
to emerge overnight. Still expecting any coverage to be localized
with brief duration bringing limited impact. With guidance through
the afternoon trending downward in regards to precipitation chances,
will continue to leave mention out for tonight at this time.

The center of a surface high pressure will move through Ontario with
height rises extending south through Michigan along with an upper
ridge passing over the Great Lakes on Sunday. This will result in
quiet and slightly cooler conditions to close out the weekend with
temperatures back into the 30s for much of southeast Michigan. If
clouds arriving behind the front break up early enough in the day,
high temperatures may lean more towards the mid to upper 30s.
Overnight lows on Sunday will drop into the 20s overnight and set
the stage ahead of the next system.

A south Pacific jet, extending out of the southwestern US, will
eject a mid level wave out of the central Plains and through the
region late Sunday night in Monday. Strengthening southerly flow
will begin to advect moisture and warmer air into the region as
increased ascent brings precipitation chances into the Michigan.
Timing of the onset of precipitation on Monday will be key to
precipitation type and potential impacts. There exists a window
early Monday morning where increased isentropic ascent ahead of the
main wave may generate some precipitation between 5-8 am while
surface temperatures remain below freezing. The slow diurnal
response with warm air advection within the 800-900 mb layer would
result in some freezing rain/wintry precipitation at the onset,
which continues into late Monday morning/early afternoon. Latest 12Z
model guidance is more bullish with precipitation potential for
Monday morning. This would bring light ice accumulation of less than
a tenth, which may result in some some slick driving conditions
during the morning commute. Thus, will trend the freezing rain
potential upwards slightly with this forecast. Currently, areas along
and north of I-94 will have potential to see some light freezing
rain with greater ice accumulation potential moving northward toward
Flint and into the Saginaw Valley/Thumb region into the early
afternoon. Adjustments to the forecast will be likely as we near the
Monday morning time frame with uncertainty in low level temperature
profiles determining the outcome of freezing rain potential. Warm
advection overtakes the boundary layer and widespread precipitation
becomes all rain by late Monday afternoon into Monday night supported
by strong vorticity advection and passing frontal boundary.
Increased pressure gradient during the day Monday will also result in
breezy conditions until the system exits to the east late Monday
night.

A strong cold front will push through the Great Lakes on Tuesday as
a broad upper trough rotates across the region. A shortwave pivoting
through this flow will lead to an increased chance for light rain in
the afternoon hours that may turn over to light snow if it persists
into the evening as colder air fills in. Highs Tuesday look similar
to those on Monday, with mid 40s for Metro Detroit and areas south
and upper 30s to lower 40s attainable elsewhere before cold
advection ramps up. Light snow showers are possible into Wednesday
and Wednesday night as the broad trough lingers overhead and cold
cyclonic flow dominates the region. Highs Wednesday will be much
closer to normal values in the lower 30s, though northwest winds
gusting to 25 mph will keep the wind chill around 20 degrees.

Strong ridge aloft returns to the region on Thursday with surface
high pressure reflection arriving early in the day and bringing an
end to any persistent snow showers apart from some potential lake
effect snow across the eastern Thumb due to north-northwest flow
across Lake Huron. Thermal trough lingers over the region into the
late week, keeping temperatures seasonably cool. Next chance for
light snow comes next weekend as a series of shortwaves swing
through.

MARINE...

A cold front moving through the central Great Lakes tonight brings
northwest wind up to 30 knots behind it lasting into Sunday
afternoon. The strongest wind occurs mainly over the north and
central open waters of Lake Huron while high waves brush outer
Saginaw Bay and south portions of the lake. A Small Craft Advisory
is now in effect to cover this time period of events before high
pressure brings brief improvement into Sunday night. Any improvement
will be short-lived as the next low pressure system approaches the
Midwest Sunday night and strongly increases the wind field early
Monday. Cold air lingering over Lake Huron ensures sufficient
instability for transport of wind gusts to the lake surface as the
pressure gradient increases. This combination likely produces mid to
high end gales through at least Monday evening and the Gale Watch
remains in effect during this time. The low pressure system occludes
into northern Ontario by Tuesday leading to diminished wind and
waves for mid week.
