.Another winter storm will impact much of Iowa late this
evening into Wednesday. Beginning this evening, snow will develop
over southwestern Iowa, and move northeast through the late
evening and overnight hours. The snow will fall heavily at times 
through the night before gradually tapering off and moving out 
Wednesday afternoon. Although winds will remain fairly light, 
visibility will be significantly reduced during periods of intense
snowfall and road conditions will rapidly deteriorate tonight.

.Another winter storm will impact much of Iowa late this evening
into Wednesday. Snow will spread across southern and central Iowa
late this evening and move into northern Iowa toward midnight. The

.DISCUSSION.../Tonight through Monday/

Main focus in this timeframe will be on the system forecast to
affect the state Tuesday night into Wednesday as active pattern
continues across the CONUS. Large surface ridge will settle into the
upper Midwest tonight keeping general subsidence and quiet
conditions over Iowa and surrounding areas.  Decent radiational
cooling and light winds should allow for temperatures in the single
digits above and below zero across the area tonight.  Some patchy
fog may also for with residual low level moisture but don't
anticipate anything problematic.

Shortwave rounds base of the trof on Tuesday and begins to progress
northeast by late in the day.  Warm advection will intensify across
Iowa through the day and robust isentropic lift is expected by the
afternoon into the evening.  Clouds will rapidly overspread the
state by afternoon and as the lift intensifies, snow will spread
into the southwest by the late afternoon.  Deep lift is expected
overnight with strong mid level forcing ahead of the approaching
shortwave.  Jet segment approaching will also aid in upper level
divergence across the area overnight and all the forcing will lead
to widespread precipitation across the state during the night.
Thermal profiles indicate snow in all areas with good forcing in the
dendritic growth zone, especially in the west.  Anticipate decent
snow rates by late evening into the early morning hours with an inch
per hour or so as max forcing passes through the state.

Lift will linger across the forecast area on Wednesday morning but
will gradually subside as the upper system departs the area.  GFS
has been suggesting a secondary weak wave in the early afternoon
which may allow snow to linger a bit longer and this will need to be
watched.  Overall, snow amounts are generally from 5 to 8 inches
across a large portion of the forecast area by mid to late morning
on Wednesday.  Given the snow rates and impacts to the Wednesday
morning commute, have expanded the watch across much of the forecast
area.  One fortunate aspect of the system is that winds will be kept
relatively in check, especially given the expansive deep snowpack
across the state that could easily be blown about.

Cold advection is held in check on the backside of the system as
deep southwest flow persist across the central United States.  Still
closely watching the another system set to impact the state Friday
into the weekend.  Initial warm advection and light precipitation is
expected on Friday night into Saturday which may see relatively warm
air across the state and rain over the southeast with mixture
farther north. However, bulk of system arrives Saturday night into
early Sunday with heavier precipitation and strong winds.  Still
uncertainty in track with this storms but significant rain/snow
amounts appear likely.

...Areas of Dense Fog Early this Morning...

Fog has developed across portions of north central and central
Iowa early this morning, and the fog may be dense in spots.
Visibilities will drop to a quarter mile at times and vary
considerably over short distances.
