Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Des Moines IA 1132 PM CST Sun Feb 10 2019 ...Aviation Update... .SHORT TERM.../Tonight/ Issued at 352 PM CST Sun Feb 10 2019 Much of the precipitation has ended as lift has rapidly decreased this afternoon. Still a bit of freezing drizzle in far northern Iowa so will leave that headline intact until 6 PM. Otherwise, the state will be in between systems overnight with easterly low level flow and moisture trapped near the surface and expect the low level cloudiness to remain overnight. Temperatures will only drop 5 to 10 degrees given the extensive cloudiness and lack of overall near surface advection. .LONG TERM.../Monday through Sunday/ Issued at 352 PM CST Sun Feb 10 2019 Monday PM - Tuesday PM Winter Weather Potential + Strong Wind Potential... Winter Weather... 21z GOES-R Water vapor imagery picking up on a very well-defined closed upper low crossing into northern California via Oregon. This low is slated to continue propagating southeastward towards the Rockies- making it there by 12z to 18z Monday- while continuing to push eastward through the upper Midwest. By 00z Tue, this system should be near the Great Lakes region. The temperatures will be challenging again. Similar to the previous winter weather event, models are initializing poorly with 18z Sun temperatures from source region (Kansas)... The GFS and especially ECMWF, in particular, have initialized anywhere between 5 and 10 degrees too warm with these temperatures. The NAM and the Canadian models have initialized the coolest and the best, so have leaned towards them for hourly sfc temps from 12z Mon-00z Wed. Lastly, upper jet dynamics are supportive as- similar to the previous event- Iowa will be fairly coupled with the left exit region of an upper jet over our south, and the right entrance region of a jet to our north/northwest. By 18z Mon, the sfc reflection low should be coming off the Rockies in western Kansas. As this low comes off the Rockies, phased with it will be a "warm" advection wing that extends w-e all the way into the Ohio Valley region. From 12z-18z Mon, am expecting a subsequent band of generally thermodynamically-driven precip to form in southern Iowa and push northward throughout the daytime... making it to the Des Moines metro by around noonish. With the better moisture not arriving until the 18z Mon-00z Tue period, am expecting more light freezing drizzle than freezing rain for Monday morning through the early afternoon hours. After 21z Mon, the better moisture arrives in Iowa, from south to north, which will help saturate low-levels of the atmos and increase precip intensity. Temperatures begin to cool as the night progresses, helping change precip from a fzdz/fzra mix to pure snow. Overall, forecast soundings of the various models support continued snow after the fzra/fzdz --> snow transition occurs. So have knocked down ice accumulations from inherited forecast back to where they were previously yesterday afternoon... namely, in the Tr. to 0.05" inch of ice accumulation range. Major heads up with QPF in that the 12z Sun ECMWF and 18z Sun NAM both came in with much higher QPF amounts across the area... with a large swath of 1" to 1.5" QPF totals... practically double what we have currently have forecast. Worth noting that these hypothetical double QPF amounts would not 1:1 double the snow amounts due to the supercooled water droplets and modification of snow growth processes that would subsequently occur. As of now, it appears the highest QPF totals will be during the 00z-06z Tue timeframe. Have a Winter Storm Watch out now, with anticipation of it being upgraded to a Winter Storm Warning either this evening or tonight, especially along and north of I-80, including the Des Moines metro. From 12z-18z Tue, there will likely be lingering snow & flurries east of I-35... and by 18z-21z, effectively all snow should be east of the DMX CWA. Strong Winds... In the past 24 hours, the track of the sfc low has shifted southward considerably... In the 12z Sat model package, the highest 3-hr pressure rises on the backside of this system were located over northern Missouri. In the 12z Sun model package, these highest 3-hr pressure rises are into southern Missouri/northern Arkansas. While it will still be windy, this will serve to keep the strongest winds to the south. However, forecast soundings still show winds in the 35 to 40 kt range through the transport/mixed layer, which will keep it windy. Impacts... Monday 7AM - 12PM: Light freezing drizzle may impact southern Iowa during the late morning hours. Overall impacts should be minimal during this time. Monday 1PM - 6PM: The afternoon/evening commute will likely be impacted by snow across most of the state, especially along and north of I-80. Travel conditions, quite frankly, could become a mess. Snowfall amounts during this commute timeframe are expected to be near Tr. to 2 inches, with the highest amounts in west-central to southwestern Iowa. Poor visibility may be the worst driver of impacts, as visibility may be down to 1/2 mile or less at times during periods of more heavy snow/heavy fzra/sleet. Untreated, less- traveled roadways may become snow-covered and slippery. If you plan on traveling Monday afternoon/evening, certainly keep an eye on the forecast and be prepared for increased travel times and reduced travel speeds. PLEASE USE EXTRA CAUTION IF TRAVELING DURING THIS TIME! Monday 7PM - 6AM: This is when most snow will fall across central to northern Iowa. Along and north of I-80, snowfall amounts of 4 to 8 inches is expected, with the highest totals in northern Iowa. South of I-80, 1 to 4 inches of snow is expected. Many roadways will become snow-covered and slippery. If you plan on traveling during this timeframe, certainly keep an eye on the forecast and be prepared for hazardous travel conditions- leading to increased travel times and reduced travel speeds over snow-covered and slippery roads. PLEASE USE EXTRA CAUTION IF TRAVELING DURING THIS TIME! Tuesday 7AM - 12PM: The winds will be very strong during this time period, blowing from the NW @ 15-25 mph, with gusts to 35 mph. This will likely lead to blowing and drifting snow... especially where the highest snowfall totals occur- likely in northern Iowa. Visibility could be incredibly poor at times, especially near open fields where blowing snow will be more unrestricted. If you plan on traveling Tuesday morning, certainly keep an eye on the forecast and be prepared for increased travel times and reduced travel speeds. Also prepare for areas of greatly reduced visibility due to blowing and drifting snow. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Thursday-Saturday Winter Weather Potential... Long range models suggesting yet another winter storms impacting the Midwest sometime during this timeframe. As anticipated in yesterday afternoon's AFD, models are beginning to tighten on a solution and track... that actually looks somewhat similar to this current system... only potentially stronger, with a sfc low possibly dropping to 985mb and a 1030mb sfc high over the backside. This would intuitively suggest a very strong wind potential with wintry precip. Tracing this system back to its source region takes us all the way to the Gulf of Alaska. By 00z Mon... if this system holds... should be much more well-defined and off the British Columbia coastline. So am ultimately expecting an even bigger increase in model handling of this system with the 00z Mon models... until then not worth getting into details too much other than to say that this is something that absolutely bears monitoring. --------------------------------------------------------------- && .AVIATION.../For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Monday night/ Issued at 1126 PM CST Sun Feb 10 2019 IFR conditions will continue through the TAF period at all sites as ceilings around and below 1000 ft dominate and visibilities drop during the latter half of the period as snow enters the sites.
