.Yet another snow-producing system is slated to impact northern
Iowa with a mix of precipitation over the south. Northwest winds
of 15 to 25 mph are expected during the storm. Behind the storm
late Sunday night and Monday, stronger northwest winds of 20 to
30 mph with gusts to 40 mph will cause blowing snow and reduced
visibility. Hazardous travel is expected late Sunday night
through Monday across the affected areas. Farther south a wintry
mix of precipitation is expected. Additional advisories for a mix
of conditions may be needed farther south of the current
highlighted areas.

Iowa with a mix of precipitation over the south. Moderate to

early Monday morning. Strong winds will also develop tonight

snow has fallen. 

This storm will be followed by an extended and rarely seen outbreak

.SHORT TERM.../Tonight through Sunday/

Storm system Sunday night into Monday the main story. The models
continue to track the system in a similar path, though the Euro is
slightly farther south. Late this afternoon and early evening, some
lingering light snow or flurries will continue over the north as a
cold front drops south this evening. Temperatures have warmed up
ahead of the passing weak low today, and some of the snow that fell
along with the older snow already on the ground is likely to compact
and crust over tonight. Behind the cold front, some clearing is
expected but will only last about 3 to 5 hours prior to more clouds
entering the region from the west northwest by 12z. Lows again will
drop to well below zero over the northeast and east where highs
struggled today to reach 10 F. Tomorrow's focus switches to the new
storm which will impact mainly the northeast with snow and some mix
over the remainder of the region late in the day and into the night.
The models are in similar agreement with regard to placement and qpf
amounts - though the Euro is slightly weaker with the storm as it
crosses the region. Overall this has some implications on wind
following the storm with about a 10 kt difference in speed and
stronger gusts farther west with the Euro than either the GFS/NAM.
By mid to late afternoon, strong isentropic lift into the frontal
zone setting up over northern Iowa/MN/northern IL will set the stage
for a rapid increase in snow during the afternoon/evening hours when
the bulk of the snow will fall. Already by 06z, the area of stronger
isentropic/mechanical lift will be moving off into southern
Wisconsin with a rapid fall in H850 temperatures as an Arctic front
is pulled south into the region. There is a period overnight where
ice introduction is lost and/or a wintry mix of precipitation is
anticipated from central to southern areas.  The far south may even
be warm enough for light rain or light drizzle prior to a changeover
by 12z Monday. Storm totals of roughly 4 to 5 inches are expected in
the warning areas (with slightly higher amounts in Winnebago/Worth
Counties) with lighter amounts in the advisory areas. The added wind
with the passage of the system will result in hazardous winter
weather - especially late Sunday night into Monday morning. The far
west is still somewhat in question due to less than anticipated
snowfall and how strong the winds will be Sunday night. With some
uncertainty and possibly a stronger likelihood that only advisory
winds will be needed over the far west, have not issued any
headlines for a wind watch as this time. An advisory can always be
added overnight tonight for wind Sunday night, but the area around
and south of US 30 over the west has little appreciable snow cover
which should limit any blowing snow and need for a winter headline
at this time.

.LONG TERM.../Sunday night through Saturday/

***Confidence is high in dangerously cold and very low wind
 chills starting later Monday through the end of the week.***

.Overview:  Snow will be ending on Monday, but winds will ramp up
and turn gusty, especially across the western half of the state
causing areas of blowing snow. Then, dangerously cold air with life
threatening wind chills will arrive late Monday and persist through
the end of the week. A clipper or two may impact the area with snow
with the best chance centered around Thursday.

.Details: Any lingering precipitation over northern and eastern Iowa
will come to an end on Monday as surface low pressure moves toward
the western Great Lakes with subsidence spreading over the state.
Winds will already be quickening before sunrise Monday. There is a
strong pressure rise (12mb/3 hour) that will weaken as it moves into
southeast Iowa by 18z Monday. Before 18z therefore will be the time
of strongest winds and gusts. Spatially, the higher wind potential
will be over our western forecast area and western Iowa. BUFKIT
soundings show winds at the top of the mixed layer at EST, FOD, and
CSQ near 40 knots in the NAM and 45 knots in the GFS. Areas that are
not covered by a winter headline may/will need a wind advisory
headline, mainly across our western forecast area. Blowing snow will
be a concern with these winds, mainly where there is falling snow or
freshly fallen snow, which will be primarily over northeastern Iowa.
Winds and blowing snow will subside through the afternoon into the
early evening. However, the winds will still be elevated enough with
colder air moving into the state for wind chill values to be 20
below by later Monday afternoon over northern Iowa and over north
central into east central Iowa Monday night.

On Tuesday, extremely cold air will be moving into the state with
500mb thickness of sub-480dam moving through Minnesota into Wisconsin
as well as northeast Iowa. Life threatening low wind chills are
increasingly likely from Tuesday through Friday morning with wind
chill headlines almost certainly needed. Temperatures were largely
weighted toward initial guidance, but did note this guidance was
near the model mean across the north so did blend in some colder
guidance. Wednesday morning will be the coldest with near record low
temperatures and the lowest wind chill values. Low temperatures will
bottom out in the middle teens below zero south to the middle 20s
below zero north with wind chill values from 30 below south to
around 50 below northeast Iowa. Highs on Wednesday are not forecast
to get above zero across much of central Iowa. Wednesday night into
Thursday morning will be another frigid morning with wind chill
values of 20 to 30 below common. Thursday will still be cold, but
this will be the first day of appreciable rises in thicknesses.
Models also have a clipper moving into Iowa on northwest flow,
though difference remain in placement and timing. While the GFS,
FV3, and CMC all have this snow moving through on Thursday, the
ECMWF is about 18 hours slower and is more Thursday night into
Friday. The CMC is the lone global model favoring southwest Iowa
with snow while the other global models favor northeast into central
Iowa with snow. Blend of the models is preferred for now in this
fast northwest flow. A final night of temperatures below zero is on
tap Thursday night into Friday morning with most if not all of
central Iowa below zero. Toward midday Friday, temperatures will
rise above zero across all of central Iowa. For Mason City, this
will bring an end to what the forecast currently has as 90
consecutive hours of below zero temperatures.

Main concern linger light snow and cigs and a bit of mixing yet this
afternoon. Will remain in MVFR/VFR until mid evening when a period
of sct to clear occurs over the area. This will fill back into the
region toward morning with a rapid lowering of cloud deck from west
to central back to MVFR then to IFR toward 18z. Light snow is also
expected to return to the region aft 12-15z Sunday.
