.SHORT TERM.../Today through Tonight/

A couple of weaker shortwaves will push across the state through
18Z.  The first wave, is impacting central into southern Iowa and
from 12Z to 15Z will be in far southeast Iowa.  The second wave will
impact northern Iowa through about 18Z before exiting to the east.

The northern Iowa system is easier to forecast.  Thermal profiles
and mainly deeper saturation will mean mostly snow to the area with
the possible exception of the far northeast later this morning as we
begin to lose ice introduction.  There may also be pockets of drying
aloft in the area between the northern and southern systems...mainly
between I-80 and highway 20.

The southern system is much more difficult to forecast. The moisture
overall is not as deep although there are pockets of deeper
moisture. Overall lift and forcing is weak and exiting the area so
precip will be light freezing drizzle and in the pockets of deeper
saturation, light snow.  To add to the mix, and similar to Monday
night, widespread fog is occurring across southern Iowa and with
abundant low level moisture, there is a fine freezing mist with the
denser fog.  The fog is also depositing ice on untreated or elevated
surfaces and with this occurring during the morning commute, I felt
it was prudent to issue a winter weather advisory for southern Iowa
in areas where either fog was under a mile or freezing drizzle had
been reported.

This afternoon, high pressure builds in and we are in a relative
lull with respect to forcing until tonight when the next system
approaches from the west. Between 09Z and 12Z lift really increases
across the west as saturation deepens.  This will result in the
development of light snow north and west.  At this time only looking
at trace amounts of accumulation by 12Z however this will bear
watching if things come together a little quicker or stronger.

.LONG TERM.../Friday through Wednesday/

Confidence: High on snow timing and occurrence, medium to high on
amounts.

With the snow storm in the beginning of the period will focus the
discussion mainly on this system at this time. Otherwise an
active period to set up beyond this initial system with
intermittent snow chances in the out periods from Sunday and
beyond and a colder pattern setting with below average
temperatures through all of next week.

Little changes regarding the overall timing/location of the system
for Friday into early Saturday, with the main adjustment is more
toward the system maybe pushing through a bit earlier than in
previous runs. Otherwise still have the southern wave ejecting from
the southern Rockies and digging through the southern Plains and
through AR late Friday night before lifting into the Ohio Valley
Saturday. Northern wave trough to phase with the system and move
through the Dakotas during the Friday before pushing across Iowa
late Friday afternoon into the evening. Therefore expect
precipitation onset across the far northwest to north/west central
Friday morning as the northern wave drops into the state. As the
southern wave digs into OK, strong WAA and moisture streaming north
off the Gulf through MO/IA by Friday afternoon into Friday evening.
Models are trending a bit up again with this system with QPF amounts
and snow totals which is concurrent with the strong push of
theta-e advection into the state by late Friday/Friday night. Both
the NAM/GFS also showing the potential for some banded snow
setting up somewhere across the southern half of the forecast
area. Cross sections indicating decent area of -EPV and
instability from near KDSM southward toward the MO border by late
Friday afternoon/early Friday evening. This coincides with an area
of stronger omega located within the dendritic zone as well,
which can also cause enhanced snow rates. Therefore as the snow
gets going, expect a period of higher snowfall rates potentially
in the vicinity of the DSM metro area southward through the
afternoon commute timeframe. This could cause some difficult
travel concerns as snowfall rates could approach 1-2" per hour in
that band and significantly reduced visibilities. Additionally
northeast winds start to increase toward early evening into the
overnight hours so some blowing and drifting snow could also
further exacerbate travel concerns due to slick, snow-covered
roads and reduced visibilities. For now have ended up with around
4 to 6 inches across the majority of the forecast area, with a
few locally higher amounts across the central to east central
portion of the forecast area. Depending on where the banding sets
up late Friday afternoon/early Friday evening, would not be
surprised if a few localized spots approach closer to 7-8 inches.
These areas will be hard to nail down as the band is only
expected to be about a county wide, but current model projections
situate it somewhere between Highway 30, I-80 and Hwy 92 corridors
at this time.

Otherwise the system quickly moves east into the Ohio Valley
Saturday with snow tapering off from northwest to southeast late
Friday night into early Saturday morning. Currently due to
collaboration with neighbors, have opted to issue a Winter Weather
Advisory for this event as there is high confidence that widespread
4 to 6 inches of snow will occur versus a Winter Storm Watch. There
is a high possibility that some or even much/all of the advisory
could still be upgraded to a Winter Storm Warning for heavy snow and
blowing snow later today or tonight as we approach the event.

.AVIATION.../For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Friday afternoon/

Stratus continues across central Iowa behind a weak front. This
stratus will eventually clear across northern Iowa and into
central Iowa overnight. However, mid and high clouds will start
moving back across the state in advance of the next system. Snow
will start across the northern during the morning with MVFR to IFR
conditions developing across much of the north by the end of the
period.
