Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Des Moines IA 343 AM CST Sat Jan 12 2019 .DISCUSSION.../Today through Friday/ Issued at 343 AM CST Sat Jan 12 2019 Mid-level closed low and associated PV anomaly is pushing through southern Kansas early this morning as viewed on GOES-16 clean IR imagery. This will continue to move east-northeastward through central Missouri into the Ohio Valley by later Saturday night and will be the overall most impactful system in the next 7 days. KDMX radar continues to show light to pockets of moderate snow primarily from the I-80 counties southward across central Iowa early this morning. Radar trends recently have shown several areas along the northern edge of the snow that have pushed a bit northward into the Highway 30 counties. However, these are beginning to translate more westward instead of northward. Surface observations show an east-northeast to northeast wind bringing in lower dewpoint air and thus drying out the low levels. Thus, the battle for snow and dry air will continue on the north edge today. Much of the Iowa DOT plow activity is south of Highway 30 at this time. However, patchy freezing drizzle is likely the cause of an accident and IDOT activity up near Mason City early this morning and have freezing drizzle there. Currently, much of the frontogenesis is not in the low levels, but more centered around 550mb over southern Iowa to 400mb over central Iowa. This does not look to change much with any appreciable forcing in the mid-levels today. Q-vector analysis in the 700-500mb layer shows moderate convergence over southern into eastern Iowa by 12z sliding out of central Iowa this evening. With Q-vector convergence in the 850-700mb layer over the far southeast part of the forecast area as well, this is where snow totals will be the highest. Farther northwest in the 850-700mb layer Q-vector analysis, there is more subsidence in this layer, which will aid in limiting snow totals. Therefore, the northern edge of PoPs were trimmed back southward to tighten up the gradient of snow/no snow. In addition, QPF was lowered with total snow amounts 0.5 to 1 inch lower near and north of Highway 30. This may need to be further tightened up if further northward expansion of the snow does not occur today. Farther south, forecast QPF was fairly good in the metro through 06z, but Lamoni had received 0.31 inches of liquid by 6z Saturday. They (LWD) have consistently picked up 0.05"/hour to 0.07"/hour since early evening. Thus, have increased the QPF over southern Iowa to account for this through early this morning. This resulted in about 0.5 to 1 inch increase of total snowfall from an Oskaloosa to Chariton to Creston line southward to the Missouri border. Winter Weather Advisory will stay unchanged at this time, though the Highway 30 counties may be able to be dropped early if there is not a push northward of snow. As the forcing moves eastward this afternoon and tonight, will have snow ending from northwest to southeast with all snow out of the area by midnight. Temperatures for Sunday were kept lowest over southern Iowa with the fresh snowpack. Previous forecast mentioned lowering temperatures Sunday night. Have not adjusted away from initial guidance as this has lowered closer, but still higher than, previous forecast. Concern is additional cloud cover that may hold temperatures up a bit. Surface high pressure will slide east south of the state Monday into Tuesday keeping the weather quiet over the area. A trough will drop toward the Great Lakes with a trailing cold front moving through the state Tuesday night into early Wednesday. At this point, the system is moisture starved and will just be a temperature drop with highs Wednesday near typical values for mid- January. As this passes, the flow aloft will become zonal with the next trough racing toward Iowa on Friday into Saturday. Global models agree that this trough will amplify over the central US as it brings precipitation to the area later Friday into early Saturday. && .AVIATION.../For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Saturday night/ Issued at 1149 PM CST Fri Jan 11 2019 Widespread MVFR to LIFR conditions due to ceilings and snow/visibility restrictions are in place across all but northern portions of the forecast area with most of the IFR/LIFR relegated to southern sections.
