.SHORT TERM.../Tonight through Saturday/

Weak short wave continues to cross the region this afternoon with
most of the warm air advection now moving off into Minnesota. There
remains a an area of light trailing the wave and this should help
light snow linger over the north and into the south into the early
evening hours. Overall, expecting about a trace to up to 2 inches
over the north with today/this evening's event. An area of light
snow has developed over southern Iowa from south of Des Moines to
near Lamoni this afternoon. This will continue moving east through
early evening. A dusting of light snow is expected with this as it
passes east of the region this evening. The best forcing has
remained in Minnesota today. Otherwise the main cold front
associated with the low will track southeast later this evening with
a transition to north winds and colder temperatures by 12z Saturday.
High res models and synoptic models suggest a period of subsidence
later in the evening which should help bring some breaks to the
cloud cover through about sunrise. By then the next upstream system
will begin spreading cloud cover over the region for much of the
remainder of the day. With cold air advection returning to the
region, lows will drop to the lower single digits northwest and into
the lower to mid teens southeast with northwest winds increasing to
about 12 mph overnight. Leaning closer to lows a bit lower than
guidance due to the continued extensive snow cover and cold air
advection. Saturday is another transition day with a weak area of
high pressure yielding to the increasing warm air advection and more
clouds. Consequently highs will not warm as much with the cloud
cover. Though there is some uncertainty with the onset of
precipitation, some return lift over the west between 21 and 00z
should result in some light snow returning to the west.
.LONG TERM.../Saturday night through Friday/

Concerns for Saturday night remain potential light snow into
early Sunday morning and another push of Arctic cold moving into
Iowa. Area of light snow will be possible over the far west early
Saturday evening then transitioning into far southern Iowa as
Arctic High Pressure ridge builds in from the north allowing for
colder and drier air to arrive. The forcing associated with this
system will be mainly isentropic lift/thermodynamic based with the
primary kinematic forcing passing to the north and south of the
state. Only minor accumulations are expected over the west with
low level dry air limiting the snow that reaches the surface.
Light snow will be possible over far southern Iowa late Saturday
night into Sunday morning as a more significant system passes just
to the south of Iowa. The primary forcing will be centered near
-30C which is outside the dendritic growth zone and more favorable
for small plates and columns. In addition, some dry air intrusion
again will be a limiting factor. Again any accumulations will be
light and mainly be an inch or less with the highest amounts near
the Missouri border.
As previously mentioned, another Arctic intrusion arrives Saturday
night and will persist through at least Monday night. Wind chill
values of 20 to 30 below will be common over the northwest third of
the state and zero to 20 below elsewhere. Wind chills will be even
colder Monday morning with values of 25 to 35 below forecast.
Temperatures will be quite cold with high temperatures in the single
digits and overnight lows well below zero in many locations Sunday
into Monday. Below are some climate states regarding how this
cold ranks all time in March and some stats for Monday March 4th
in general. Notice, we don't have to go back to far to find some
record March cold!
The wind will be another factor during this time period. In addition
to aiding in the very cold wind chills, will also cause some blowing
snow. While the blowing snow should not cause much visibility
issues, there will be some snow covered roads once again and possibly
some drifting where snow is already piled up along the road edges.
Mainly null weather Tuesday and Wednesday with a modest warming trend,
though temperatures will remain well below seasonal values. A break
from the northwest flow aloft arrives around Thursday and will place
the Midwest back into a more active pattern and a bit warmer
temperatures as a more zonal pattern develops. That said, temperatures
still will remain well below normal. Possible for a couple systems
to bring snow back to the state beginning late Thursday. Confidence
remains low though as a large area of high pressure will be
situated just north of the state and could help shove any systems
south of the state.

In the immediate future, KMCW to battle periodic MVFR ceilings as
scattered to broken clouds slide southward. KALO/KOTM will see
MVFR clouds exit through about 08z, then remain mostly clear along
with KFOD/KDSM through the night. Mid-high level clouds will
slide in towards the morning, all the while northwesterly to
northerly winds continue to prevail. While cold air filters in, it
is not substantially dry, leaving potential for MVFR cloud decks
later Saturday, but have stuck with scattered mentions for the
time being.
