Well-advertised cyclonic system beginning to push off the Rockies.
Two upper lows one near ID/MT/WY, the other near the Four Corners
Region undergoing something of a Fujiwara Effect/phasing as they
build and begin to eject off the Rockies. Hi-res models coming well
aligned for today with placing the resultant sfc low near central KS
by 00z Thu. Baroclinicity showing itself to be very high with this
system as  09z Wed temperatures are in the mid 40s across central
Nebraska, to the mid 60s across central Kansas.

Radar picking up on a NW-SE oriented band of precip across north-
central to northern Iowa. This precip is associated with a strong
band of 800-700mb frontogenesis serving as a focusing mechanism ahead
of the initial moisture surge with our main system. This precip will
likely bring around 0.25 to 0.5 inches or so of rain to northern
Iowa this morning and today. Temperatures are such that this precip
should generally remain in the form of rain... though a few nil-
impact sleet/ice pellets are briefly possible in far northern Iowa.

Thunderstorms will begin to move into Iowa from west/sw to east late
today into the overnight hours. Some of these storms may be strong
to severe. This will be addressed in better detail in the long-term
section of this AFD.

*/ Hazardous Wind Potential...

Winds are forecast to be very strong with this system. Models
bottoming out the sfc low around 980mb today. Current sfc pressure
in Iowa around 1010 mb, so certainly a notable gradient. By this
afternoon, pressure gradient, particularity in western Iowa, slated
to reach 3mb/50km, which is strong for Iowa. 3-hr pressure falls
around 3mb/hour this afternoon to increase overnight tonight.
Looking at vertical profile, winds get strong in a hurry off the
deck. RAP Forecast soundings in Iowa have 40 to 45kts at about
2000ft by this afternoon across the central to western portions of
the state. In all, highly supportive of sustained winds of 25 to 35
mph, and gusts to (at least)45 mph.

Impacts... Wanted to make special note of winds pretty much from due
east. This will especially impact travel on north-south oriented
roads such as I-35. So expanded wind adv. to northeastern counties
of the DMX CWA for this afternoon, even though winds may not reach
the criteria level by numerical definition.  The strong easterly
component to the wind will amplify travel impacts on I-35. Travel
with extra caution today on north-south oriented roads.

.LONG TERM.../Thursday through Tuesday/

The forecast challenges with the strong spring system for tonight
into Thursday night are thunderstorm chances tonight, the timing of
the cold front arrival Thursday then potential for a switch over to
snow Thursday night. The system track continues to inch further west
and north which means less rainfall overall for the area and will
help limit any flooding threat and will minimize winter weather
potential across the north.

The surface low pressure, which is currently at 990 mb over east
central Colorado is expected to deepen to near 982 mb by this
evening over central Kansas. A 75 kt low level jet (LLJ) will ramp
up quickly east of the surface low over eastern Kansas and western
Missouri and pointing directly into Iowa. The LLJ will bring a
strong surge of theta-e advection to the state with mid level lapse
rates near 8.5 C/km and MUCAPES in excess of 1000 J/kg expected.
Expect an area of elevate thunderstorms to develop overnight an race
north/northeast. These storms will have an attendant large hail
threat. In addition, it is possible that a few wind gusts in excess
of 50s kts occur.

In addition to the thunderstorm potential, strong and gusty easterly
winds will be ongoing overnight. The surface pressure gradient will
be strong for much of the state as the surface low pressure lifts
northeast towards southeast Nebraska. Despite shallow mixing
overnight to near 925 mb, mixed layer winds of 40+ kts are likely
through a good portion of the overnight. Sustained winds over 30 mph
or greater with gusts of 45 mph or greater expected. Therefore the
Wind Advisory will persist into early Thursday.

The surface low will lift north along the Iowa/Nebraska border on
Thursday and will drag a narrow thermal ridge northeast through
central Iowa. This should allow temperatures to warm into the low to
mid 60s southeast while far northern Iowa will remain hovering near
40. By late Thursday and into the overnight, the rare southwest wind
cold front will be moving into central Iowa as the cold air wraps
around the south edge of the system. The upper low will begin to
move east/northeast late Thursday night into Friday with light rain
changing to light snow. Minor accumulations possible over northern
Iowa. Minimal impacts from any winter weather with 4 inch soil
temperatures across Iowa ranging from the upper 40s across north
central Iowa to the low to mid 50s south. Road temperatures
currently are similar. Total rainfall amounts of one to two inches
remain possible, mainly north of Highway 20, which has shifted
northward by nearly 30 miles from 24 hrs ago. In addition, the high
end amounts over far northern Iowa had trended lower. This will help
alleviate flooding potential and concerns though rises on some
streams remains likely.

The low pressure system will depart on Friday but will leave Iowa
under cool cyclonic curvature along with 850 mb temperatures in the
-3C to -8C range. High temperatures Friday in the 30s and 40s are
expected but the coolness will be further amplified by gusty west
winds that will drop apparent temperatures into the 20s and 30s.
Ridge of high pressure will arrive late Friday night into Saturday
and will bring relief from several days of gusty winds. Temperatures
Saturday morning will be in the 20s to low 30s followed by highs in
the 40s and 50s Saturday.

The next system to monitor is on Sunday. The ECMWF remains the
farther north outlier lifting an upper level system into southeast
Iowa. Other solutions favor a deeper upper low over northern
Minnesota and keeping the southern stream system further south. Do
have pops into southeast Iowa for Sunday but again some uncertainty
on this system remains.

Showers and a few thunderstorms will continue across northern Iowa
overnight as strong warm advection persists. VFR ceilings and
visibilities will drop to MVFR and eventually IFR toward daybreak
and continue restricted through the remainder of the forecast in
northern Iowa. Farther south, ceilings will remain high with
either VFR or MVFR during the forecast period. In all locations,
strong east winds will develop overnight and continue to increase
through Wednesday as a surface low deepens across the Plains.
