...SNOW TO IMPACT HOLIDAY TRAVEL TUESDAY NIGHT INTO WEDNESDAY
ACROSS NORTHWEST WISCONSIN...

.A winter storm will impact the Northland Tuesday night into
Wednesday morning. Northwest Wisconsin and portions of 
northeastern Minnesota from Brainerd to the Twin Ports and parts 
of the North Shore will see the main effects of this storm. 
Snowfall of 6 to 10 inches is possible in northwest Wisconsin 
within the warning area with isolated higher totals up to 14 
inches from Bayfield to Iron Counties. Snowfall of 3 to 8 inches 
is possible for parts of northeastern Minnesota within the watch 
area. Travel may be significantly impacted through at least 
Wednesday morning, and travel during the Wednesday morning commute
may be dangerous to nearly impossible in some areas.

Snow will spread across northwest Wisconsin and northeastern
Minnesota Tuesday night before ending Wednesday afternoon. The
heaviest snow is expected during the early morning to mid-morning
hours on Wednesday. Areas of blowing snow may also reduce
visibilities Wednesday morning.

.A winter storm will impact the Northland tonight into Wednesday 
morning. Northwest Wisconsin and portions of northeastern 
Minnesota from Brainerd to the Twin Ports and parts of the North 
Shore will see the main effects of this storm. In northwest
Wisconsin 8 to 12 inches is expected with locally higher amounts
as high as 15 to 20 inches possible in parts of Bayfield, Ashland,
and Iron counties. In northeast Minnesota, there will be sharp
difference in snow amounts as you head west, with 6 to 10 inches
in the Twin Ports and parts of the north shore to 4 to 8 inches
for Brainerd and the Iron Range. In addition to the heavy snow
rates, strong winds gusting as high as 30 to 45 mph will lead to
areas of blowing snow. 

Snow begins south to north this evening, with snow falling by
midnight for much of the region except for parts of the north
shore and Iron Range where it will begin after midnight.
Conditions will be worst in the early Wednesday morning hours, and
travel during the Wednesday morning commute may be dangerous to 
nearly impossible in northwest Wisconsin and in the Twin Ports due
to heavy snow rates and blowing snow. Snow will end from west to 
east Wednesday afternoon with some lingering lake effect snow 
along the south shore into Wednesday evening.

northeastern Minnesota from Brainerd to the Twin Ports and parts 
of the North Shore will see the main effects of this storm. In 
northwest Wisconsin, 8 to 12 inches is expected and locally 
higher amounts as high as 12 to 18 inches are possible in parts 
of Bayfield, Ashland, and Iron counties. In northeast Minnesota,

Northland through this morning, with some lingering snowfall
across far northern Wisconsin due to lake effect snow. Snow will
gradually diminish from west to east as the large area of low
pressure that is causing this snowfall will continue to lift
northeastward today. On top of what has already fallen, an
additional 1 to 5 inches of snowfall will be possible over
northeast Minnesota, while much heavier additional amounts of 6 
to 12 inches will be possible for portions of northwest Wisconsin,
particularly from Douglas county east towards Iron county.
Snowfall rates of 1 inch per hour or more will be possible along
the Bayfield Peninsula and along the higher elevations of northern
Iron county southwest into Ashland counties. In addition to the

A slick Monday morning commute as wet surfaces and temperatures near
the freezing mark will cause some slippery stretches on area roads,
especially along and north of the Iron Range. Another round of
precipitation moves across the Northland today, a mix of rain and
snow, with around 1-2 inches of snowfall possible along and north of
the Iron Range. Overall, though, much of the precipitation will be
rain as temperatures rise above freezing, in the mid 30s to low 40s.
Tonight as the clipper responsible for the precip exits to the
northeast, winds turn northwesterly leading to a brief period of
lake effect snow along the south shore. Overnight lows in the 20s.
Mainly cloudy and dry for Tuesday with highs cooler in the upper 20s
to mid 30s.

On the synoptic scale a mid-level shortwave trough and resultant
surface low will move across northern Minnesota. The warm front
associated with this low moved across the Northland last night
bringing mainly rain, with dry conditions this morning in the dry
slot of the low. Later today, though, precipitation will return as
the low moves across northern MN and over Lake Superior, with colder
air filtering in behind the low and surface winds switching from
southwest today to northwest tonight. With the southwest winds today
advecting in warmer temps, precipitation will fall as a rain/snow
mix initially before changing to all snow this evening, though
accumulating snow will generally be limited to along and north of
the Iron Range due to both temps and the best large-scale lift
associated with the low. There is a chance for freezing rain/drizzle
due to a loss of ice aloft at times, but in general think most
precip will be either rain or snow in the wake of the low this
afternoon into tonight.

Mainly dry on Tuesday as attention then shifts to the more powerful
winter storm developing across the central High Plains and lifting
northeast towards the Great Lakes Tuesday night into Wednesday. For
most of Tuesday conditions will be dry with mostly cloudy skies -
excellent weather conditions to get last minute preparations done
for both the Thanksgiving holiday and for the upcoming winter
storm.

.LONG TERM...(Tuesday night through Sunday)

The major story in the long term will be two significant winter
storms that will impact the region, the first Tuesday night into
Wednesday and the second on Friday and lasting through the weekend,
both of which will likely create significant holiday travel hazards.

An upper level trough will swing through the midwest with a
deepening surface low moving northeast roughly from Kansas into
Wisconsin Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. Strong warm air
advection ahead of this low and a moisture source originating from
the Gulf of Mexico will bring an abundance of moisture to the
region. This storm has been trending westward, and models are in
good consensus with an area of heavy snow impacting northwest
Wisconsin. Around 6 to 10 inches of snow will be possible with
isolated amounts up to 1 foot. The biggest area of uncertainty is
how far northwest the snow will make it, but with the westward
track, decided to upgrade a portion of counties in northeast
Minnesota into the Winter Storm Watch as well, generally including
Brainerd to the Twin Ports and points south and east. Also included
the nearshore of Lake County where some lake enhancement may
increase snow amounts due to northeasterly winds. Current thinking
is for around 3 to 8 inches in the northeast Minnesota watch area,
with higher totals to the south and east. Timing-wise, snow should
begin falling late Tuesday evening and spread into the region from
south to north Tuesday night. The heaviest snow will fall Wednesday
morning, and this will create dangerous to nearly impossible travel
conditions. In addition to the heavy snow, winds will be quite gusty
with gusts from 30 to 40 miles per hour possible, especially near
Lake Superior and in northwest Wisconsin, which will lead to blowing
snow. The snow will gradually taper off from west to east Wednesday
afternoon into the evening.

As the low pressure system passes by to the northeast on Wednesday,
winds will switch to the northwest, which will keep the potential
for lake effect snow going for parts of the South Shore Wednesday
night. 850-mb temperatures around -10C are marginal for heavy
accumulations, but certainly light accumulations up to an inch will
be possible especially in Iron County Wednesday night.

High pressure builds into Canada for Thanksgiving day, which will
give the region a brief break from the snowy weather, though skies
will likely remain mostly cloudy. Winds will turn northeasterly,
which may bring light lake effect snow showers or flurries into the
Twin Ports and North Shore.

A large closed off upper level low over the Rockies will slowly
slide east Thursday into Friday and Saturday, developing and
deepening a surface low that will track northeast over the Plains
and into the upper Midwest. There remain model differences in
timing, location, and exact QPF values, but this system looks to
have similar, if not stronger, dynamic support for snowfall
compared to the Wednesday storm. With temperatures in the low 30s,
most precipitation should fall in the form of snow with perhaps
some mixed precipitation affecting northwest Wisconsin if a more
westward track is favored. Unlike the Wednesday system, however,
this storm looks to become nearly vertically stacked over the
weekend, so this system has the potential to be a long-duration
snow-maker. It is still too early to determine snowfall totals
with this storm being several days away. This storm has the
potential to create significant travel hazards for the post-
Thanksgiving travel commute, so make sure to keep checking on the
latest forecast for updates.

A shortwave moving through the area today has brought an area of
snow and IFR/LIFR conditions, mainly to KINL and KHIB, with
MVFR/VFR conditions to the south. The shortwave moves east today
and tonight, and while I expect the southern terminals to
gradually deteriorate to MVFR/IFR for the 21z to 03z time frame,
KINL and KHIB to remain IFR/LIFR through 03z. After 03z, I expect
conditions to either remain MVFR/IFR or lower ceilings to IFR,
but little to no improvement is expected until after 14z when all
sites should have returned to at least MVFR ceilings with VFR
visibilities.

Southwest winds will increase today as an area of low pressure
approaches Lake Superior from the west, moving across the lake from
west to east this evening. There will be a period of southwest winds
15-25 knots for a few hours this afternoon and evening, with the
strongest winds along parts of the south shore from Port Wing to
Sand Island. Winds diminish quickly as they turn to become
northwesterly. A Small Craft Advisory has been issued today due to
the stronger southwest winds expected.

Tuesday night into Wednesday a very strong low pressure system will
approach the Great Lakes, resulting in increasing northeast winds
and gale force gusts to 40 knots or stronger at times. Gales are
most likely along the south shore late Tuesday night into Wednesday
morning, then winds turn northerly and weaken Wednesday night. A
Gale Watch has been issued for all of western Lake Superior for
this threat. There is very high confidence for gale force winds
Tuesday night into Wednesday.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Tuesday through Sunday

A very strong low pressure system will approach the Great Lakes
Tuesday night into Wednesday leading to strong northeast winds.
Gales to 40 knots or stronger are likely for much of the south
shore and parts of the north shore, with resultant waves on the
south shore as high as 8 to 12 feet Wednesday. A Gale Watch has
been issued for all of western Lake Superior due to this threat.

Late Friday into Saturday an approaching low pressure system will
lead to increasing easterly to northeasterly winds and building
waves. Conditions are likely to be hazardous for small craft, and
gales might be possible.

...SNOW AND FOG AFFECTING THE IRON RANGE AND NORTH...

A mix of snow, rain and fog are affecting the Iron Range and
areas to the north this morning. Observations show that
temperatures are above freezing across the area, but some roads
may be near or below freezing, which will lead to slick spots. In
addition, some areas are reporting very poor visibilities in fog
and snow.

If you will be out driving late this morning and early this
afternoon, icy roads are possible, slow down and allow extra time.
