shortwave ridging builds in ahead of a west coast closed low.
Southwest flow aloft will keep a few clouds around the area today
and tonight. Low level winds currently from the west will
gradually turn to the east southeast over the next 12 to 24 hours
as low level mass response from the approaching trough increases.
A lee low will begin to develop early Tuesday which will bring
strong warm advection in across the low and mid levels of the
atmosphere. Temperatures today and tomorrow will be mild with
highs in the 40s and 50s for most. A few showers are possible late
tonight and early Tuesday as warm as the advection increases.

Tuesday afternoon and evening, the focus shifts to an extremely
strong winter storm expected to develop along the front range and
eastern plains. Uncertainty still remains as some components of
the storm are still offshore, but model agreement and confidence
are increasing in significant winter weather impacts.
The lee side low expected to develop early Tuesday will undergo
rapid intensification as the upper level closed low over southern
Arizona interacts with a shortwave polar trough and baroclinic
zone along the front range of the rockies. 12 hour 500 mb height
falls on the order of 200-250 DAM along with very strong DPVA and
a pronounced jet streak will cause the surface low to rapidly
deepen over east central Colorado and northwestern kansas. Simply
put, the dynamics involved with this system are exceptional.
Extremely strong mid level lift will develop over the front range
and eastern plains late Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning
as the low becomes vertically stacked. This strong lift in
combination with the strong moisture return and warm temperatures
will cause elevated instability to develop early Wednesday. This
means a few rumbles of thunder are likely over southeastern
Wyoming and western Nebraska. Precipitation late Tuesday and
early Wednesday will likely develop as a rain snow/ freezing rain
mix to start before rapidly transitioning to all snow early
Wednesday morning. Because of the extremely strong dynamic lift,
very heavy snow is expected along the plains and front range of
eastern Wyoming and Western Nebraska. By Wednesday afternoon, the
rapidly deepening surface low and associated pressure gradient
will help create very strong low level winds. Hires guidance
suggest winds may be sustained from the north at 30 to 40 kts
through Thursday afternoon. Gusts as high as 60 mph are also
likely which could pose problems with the wetter and heavier
snow. This is a classic blizzard scenario for southeastern Wyoming
and western Nebraska. Snow totals could be well over a foot in
some spots with drifts likely reaching several feet in depth. The
plains and adjacent foot hills are the most likely to see blizzard
conditions through the period. However, blowing and drifting snow
are likely going to impact much of interstate 25 and Interstate
80.
A Winter Storm Watch was issued for much of southeastern Wyoming
and all of western Nebraska to account for the threats with this
system. The watch runs from midnight 12am Wednesday through 6 pm
Thursday evening. This is one of the more dynamic storms in recent
memory. Historical analogs are in good agreement for significant
impacts across the area. This is a dangerous storm! Prepare now
for hazardous winter weather conditions Wednesday and Thursday.
The surface low and upper level low will rapidly eject to the east
Thursday afternoon and evening bringing an end to the snow by 00z
Friday. High pressure behind the storm will keep things mostly
quiet heading into the weekend and early next week. Expect below
average temperatures thanks to the increased snow pack and colder
air associated with the polar high. Continued upper level ridging
and surface high pressure will continue through early next week
keeping things cool and mostly quiet.

LIFR conditions persist at KRWL with localized fog and low
ceilings but VFR condiitons exist elsewhere across southeast
Wyoming and into the Nebraska Panhandle. Winds are light from the
southwest to southeast with KSNY more easterly. KRWL will improve
slowly to VFR through the afternoon and VFR prevailing all sites
until 04Z. Thereafter, ceilings and fog will likely develop across
Nebraska Panhandle. Ceilings will fall to IFR/LIFR levels with
patchy IFR to LIFR visibilities at times due to localized fog
through Tuesday morning. VFR conditions will return after 15Z
Tuesday morning to the Nebraska Panhandle.
