Polar vortex was centered over southern Hudson Bay Canada with a
broad trough over much of the Lower 48 this afternoon. Leading
edge of arctic airmass extended from central FL across the southern
Gulf of Mexico, north along the CO/NM Front Range, then northwest
into southern ID. Strong surface ridge encompassed the Great Plains
to the northern Rockies. After another record-setting morning of
low temperatures, afternoon temperatures managed to rise into the
teens and low 20s despite the fresh snow cover. Winds were variable
less than 10 MPH, except gusting 30-35 MPH from the west between
Laramie and Rawlins.
The center of the surface ridge will gradually drift east tonight
and Tuesday. Low temperatures tonight will not be as cold as this
morning, generally from 0 to -10 degrees. Wind speeds tonight will
average 5 to 10 MPH, except 10 to 15 MPH over the northern NE
Panhandle. Apparent temperatures or wind chills will range from
-20 to -30 degrees for much of the NE Panhandle as well as Converse,
Niobrara and Goshen counties in WY. Issued a Wind Chill Advisory
for these areas from 8 PM this evening until 8 AM Tuesday. Tuesday
will be 10 to 15 degrees warmer than today as 700mb temperatures rise
from -12 to -16C to -8 to -12C. It will be breezy along and west of
the Laramie Range Tuesday afternoon with west-southwest winds gusting
to 30 to 35 MPH.

Issued Winter Storm Watch for the Snowy Mountain Range for 10 to
16 inches of snow. Winds may gust as high as 40 MPH. 12 to 20
inches of snow is possible for Sierra Madres. Adjusted Watch valid
time to 06Z Wed through 18Z Thu. /MAJ
Mountain snow will increase in coverage & intensity on Tue night &
persist through early Thursday, owing to favorable orographics and
a substantial push of deep Pacific moisture. This should be a very
favorable pattern for the Sierra Madres. The majority of models do
focus on this area versus the Snowys, so confidence is higher with
significant totals there. The NAM is the most aggressive given QPF
progs in excess of 2 inches, but this actually may not be entirely
out of the question with strong dynamic support/PVA, and even some
chance for convective elements. We decided on a Winter Storm Watch
for the Sierra Madres from 00z Wed through 12z Thu. The Snowys may
need a headline eventually as well, but confidence in snow amounts
in excess of 12 inches is higher for the Sierras.
The lead short wave on Wed night & Thu may also create problems in
areas outside of the mountains. Deep lifting in the LFQ of the 120
knot H25 jet over northern Colorado, coupled w/excellent low-level
frontogenesis, isentropic upglide and slantwise instability should
prove supportive of a period of very heavy snow to the N of the I-
80 corridor, but confidence in exactly where/how long remains very
low at this time. GFS & NAM QPF amounts have trended higher & both
now show over a half inch of liquid in a narrow swath oriented SW-
NE. That said, we will need to pay very close attention to this in
the coming days. Winter headlines may be required.
Winter impacts are also possible over some portions of the CWA for
the weekend with the parent upper-level trough digging into the 4-
Corners and eventually ejecting northeast across the central Great
Plains. The evolution & track of this storm are uncertain. However
it does appear that gusty winds will develop over much of the area
on Friday night & Saturday. Significant blowing snow impacts would
be a major concern even if a small amount of snow falls. This will
also be something to monitor closely this week.

VFR conditions prevail mostly across southeast Wyoming and
Nebraska Panhandle this evening. Patchy MVFR to IFR ceilings exist
just south of KRWL and over the higher mountain terrain in
southern Carbon County. Will need to monitor yet again for patchy
areas of fog and reduced visibilities near KRWL and KLAR overnight
through 14-15Z Tuesday morning. Both NAM soundings and HRRR hi-res
output suggest localized fog that could impact these two
terminals. Have placed TEMPO group in for now at KLAR for the
lower ceiling possibilities. Elsewhere, VFR conditions expected
through the period. Winds will be light and variable overnight and
increase upwards of 10 to 15 knots from the southwest and south
Tuesday afternoon. Nebraska sites may even see more of a southeast
to east wind by late Tuesday.
