Forecast challenges turn to snow amounts and timing in the short
term.
Currently...Frontal boundary lays across the CWA this morning from
extreme northeast Colorado...to just north of Cheyenne to
Riverton. East of this front...we have northeast upsloping winds
and low stratus. Out west...still getting measurable snowfall in
the Sierra Madre Range as a few SNOTEL sites just reported in with
.1" over past three hours. Farther west...satellite imagery
showing a low pressure system moving into northern California and
another off the coast of Washington State.
For today...Will see what the SNOTELS in the Sierra Madre Range
continue to report over the next few hours to see about cancelling
the Winter Weather Advisory. Not seeing much in the way of cloud
enhancement on IR imagery at this time...so I may need to cancel
early. Latest HRRR guidance does continue QPF out that way through
the day though...so would not hurt to let the advisory run its
course.
Begin to see affects of the California low Tuesday afternoon as it
opens up and tracks into northern Utah and western Wyoming.
NAM...GFS...SREF and ECMWF all in good agreement on timing with
widespread snow developing over Carbon County around 00Z Wednesday
(Tuesday afternoon local time). Heaviest snow looks to be 06Z to
18Z Wednesday across Carbon County. Likely going to need to spread
the Winter Storm Watch further east Wednesday as the precip
expands into the Panhandle. Not getting favorable snow amounts at
this time outside of the area I have highlighted.
.LONG TERM...(Wednesday night through Sunday)

Wednesday night/Thursday...As the trough aloft starts to exit our
eastern counties, snow will decrease in coverage from west to east
Wednesday night and Thursday morning. Quite cold on Thursday in the
wake of the cold front with 700 mb temperatures near -18 Celsius and
a fresh snowpack.
Friday...A decent warming trend begins as the flow aloft turns
westerly and the cold air retreats off to our east.
Saturday...The flow aloft turns southwest with a slow warming trend
across our southern counties, and cooler temperatures in the north
behind a slowly sagging southward Canadian cold front.
Sunday...Cooler temperatures in the wake of a progressive shortwave
trough aloft passage and its associated cold front. Mostly dry due
to limited low and mid level moisture.

MVFR to near IFR conditions will persist across the western Nebraska
terminals through early this afternoon. Expect any flurry activity
to dissipate in the next few hours with CIGS slowly lifting and
becoming FEW-SCT after 20z. VFR conditions should prevail late this
afternoon and into late this evening, but CIGS will slowly lower
once again tonight and into Tuesday morning, including the southeast
Wyoming terminals. Some light snow is possible for KRWL late this
afternoon through tonight, but coverage should be isolated with
little confidence in timing.

systems move through the area. Widespread snow is expected over
the Sierra Madre Range today and again Tuesday afternoon. Winter

afternoon through Wednesday afternoon. This snow spreads east
across the Laramie Range into the Nebraska Panhandle Wednesday.
Very cold temperatures behind the system for Wednesday and
Thursday.
