.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Friday)

Early afternoon WV/IR imagery depicted cyclonic flow aloft over the
North Central Rockies and Plains. A potent shortwave and accompanying
surface front were moving into WY and western NE. Steep low/mid level
lapse rates and strong winds aloft were promoting the development of
convective snow bands across much of southeast WY, and this trend will
continue through early evening. These bands will produce brief
restrictions in visibility with gusty northwest winds to 40 mph and
moderate snowfall. Winter Weather Advisories remain in effect until 6 PM
for the I-80 corridor between Cheyenne and Laramie. Temperatures ranged
from the lower 30s to lower 50s.

Trough deepens tonight as shortwave drops south into the central
Rockies and High Plains, and shifts to the east Thursday. Showers
will linger into the late night hours before ending. Ridging aloft
over the western CONUS flattens and spreads east across the Rockies
Thursday through Friday. This will result in a west-northwest
downslope flow and temperatures warming to seasonal normals Friday.
It will remain breezy along and west of the Laramie Range.

.LONG TERM...(Friday night through Tuesday)

The extended forecast period looks to be quite active across south
east Wyoming and the western Nebraska Panhandle. The GFS and ECMWF
remain in agreement with general upper-level troughing w/ numerous
pieces of energy traversing the flow. Two significant cold frontal
passages are expected, one on Saturday and another on Tuesday. The
first impact will be Friday night into Saturday w/ increased lower
level gradients due to pressure falls over eastern WY. Strong wind
appears likely for the typical wind corridors as CAG-CPR gradients
climb to near 65 meters with 50-60 knot flow aloft. Wind is likely
to gradually diminish through the day on Saturday with the frontal
passage. Widespread accumulating snow appears possible on Saturday
night and Sunday with good isentropic lift. We can expect a rather
brief quiet period prior to a similar weather system on Tuesday w/
yet another good chance for snowfall accumulations region-wide. It
appears possible that both high wind and winter headlines could be
necessary on multiple occasions through the extended period.

VFR should prevail at the terminals though there will be some snow
showers around the area into this evening which may produce periods
of MVFR/IFR visibilities and cigs. VFR expected for all terminals
after 06Z. Some gusty NW winds as well this afternoon with gusts
over 30 kts, mainly over the plains.

A surge of cooler air will move through the districts this afternoon,
producing gusty northwest winds and scattered rain and snow showers.
High pressure Thursday and Friday will bring breezy and milder weather.
A stronger cold front will plunge south through the region Saturday,
with widespread accumulating snow and colder temperatures lasting into
early next week.

is expected for lower elevations, with two to five inches over the
Snowy and Sierra Madres.

A strong cold front will bring colder temperatures and winter
conditions Saturday night through early next week. Strong winds
will precede the front Saturday across the wind prone areas.
