A broad deep upper trough dominated much of the Lower 48, with a
stout eastern Pacific upper ridge. Northwest flow aloft prevailed,
with a Alberta clipper poised north of the MT/ND border. A lead
shortwave disturbance was tracking southeast across eastern WY and
western SD and northwest NE. Some light snow was occurring in the
vicinity of this wave. West to northwest surface winds were
occasionally gusting to 30 mph along the I-80 corridor between
Cheyenne and Rawlins.
The main challenge with the short term will focus on the high wind
potential for Saturday through Sunday for portions of southeast WY.
Occasional light to moderate snow will continue to fall over the
southern WY mountains today and tonight with the passage of a
couple shortwave disturbances. Winter Weather Advisories are in
effect for the Sierra Madre/Snowy Range mountains where total
accumulations of 7 to 11 inches are expected. Gusty west winds up
to 45 MPH will produce patchy blowing snow today, mainly west of
I-25. After a cold Thursday, highs today will moderate slightly
with 700mb temperatures from -10 to -14C. Tonight will not be as
cold for the plains with lows in the low-mid 20s. Northwesterly
flow aloft strengthens Saturday in the wake of shortwave disturbance.
The 850mb CAG-BRX gradient ramps up quickly after 15Z Saturday,
peaking in the 80-90mtr range through 03Z Monday. The CAG-CPR
gradient is 10-20mtrs lower for the same time period. 700mb winds
increase to 50-55kt along the Laramie Range from Saturday
afternoon through Sunday evening. Went ahead and issued High Wind
Watches for central Laramie Range/southwest Platte County, north
Snowy Range foothills, south Laramie Range and foothills from 11
AM Saturday through 8 PM Sunday. Confidence for high winds across
the adjacent zones east of I-25 is low due to unfavorable omega
and low-mid level lapse rates, but later shifts may consider high
wind potential if models trend that direction.
Timing of strong Canadian cold frontal passage is Sunday evening,
with blustery northerly winds, falling temperatures and fairly
widespread snowfall. Accumulations through Monday morning will range
from 1-2 inches west of I-25, with 3-5 inches over the mountains.
Areas east of I-25 could receive up to an inch. Blowing snow will
add insult to injury creating hazardous travel conditions for most
of southeast WY.
.LONG TERM...(Monday through Thursday)

Large scale flow will be dominated by a polar vortex dropping
southeast from south-central Canada into the Great Lakes and
Northeast through mid-week. Eastern Pacific upper ridge shifts
east toward the West Coast Wednesday and inland Thursday. The
prevailing flow aloft will be fairly strong northwesterly with
breezy to windy periods most days. The CWA will be on the western
periphery of a continental polar airmass Monday through Tuesday,
with below normal temperatures. Gusty northwest winds combined
with the cold temperatures Monday and Tuesday night will lower
wind chills to -15 to -25 degrees west long and west of the
Laramie Range. A series of shortwave disturbances will produce
light snow across eastern WY, western SD and northwest NE Monday
through Wednesday. Orographic snow showers will occur over the
mountains each day. Temperatures will moderate to above normal
Thursday.

Looking at a fairly gusty period across all terminals this
afternoon with a slight decrease overnight and picking up again
mid-Saturday morning of gusts in the 20 to 30 knot range, may not
be out of the question for some 40 knot gusts. A few snow showers
will likely develop across the higher terrain in the western
portion of the forecast area that may impact KRWL with lower
ceilings and potential snow. Some lower ceilings later today and
overnight to develop with SCT to BKN decks around 070 mainly after
00z.
