Summary: Main impact focus will be on the increasing winds across
the wind prone areas plus portions of Converse, Platte, and
farther south along the I-80 Summit area. A High Wind Watch is
now in effect for these areas from 11pm tonight through 2am Sunday
morning for these locations. Temperatures will also be 15F to 20F
above normal today and Saturday with a slight cool down Sunday
before a cold front moves through.

Impacts: Blowoff/Blowover risk to light, high profile vehicles
will increase during this time frame. Please take precautions to
weight your load down or avoid travel in these areas Saturday.

Weather Details: A broad, flat ridge is analyzed over the region
per water vapor satellite imagery and RAP guidance this morning
with light winds over the High Plains to upwards of 25-30 mph in
the higher terrain west of Laramie. Pressure gradient will tighten
along with H7 heights with the encroachment of two shortwave
troughs north and west of the Rockies. CAG-CPR height gradients
will increase to the mid-50 meter range per latest guidance early
Saturday morning. Wind gusts of 55-60+ occurred with height
gradients slightly lower in the past high wind event so with
mid-50s and an upward trend noted over the past 24 hours, think
periodic gusts of 58mph+ will be likely for the wind prone areas
plus locations just outside of them. Subsidence combined with
decent lapse rates Saturday will also aid in better downward
momentum mixing in the lee of the Laramie Mountain Range. Winds
should decrease late Saturday into early Sunday as surface
pressure lowers in the west and reduces the overall gradient.
However, will need to monitor Arlington zone all the way into
Sunday as periodic gusts of 50 to 60 mph could linger near Elk
Mountain and Arlington. CIPS west-east wind component shows +3 to
+4 standard deviations above normal for westward wind speeds
during this period.

Regarding the above normal warmth, H7 temperatures are +1 to +2
standard deviations above normal for this time of year per CIPS
with readings ranging from +1C to +4C across the High Plains
through early Sunday.

.LONG TERM...(Sunday through Thursday)

Summary: Cooler and unsettled pattern starting Sunday into next
week with increasing chances of snow for portions of the area.
Some travel impacts likely along I-80 during this time. A Winter
Weather Advisory may be needed for the Sierra Madre Range late
this weekend. The better chance for more widespread and impactful
snow could occur mid- to late-week for the High Plains.

Potential Impacts: Travel may be difficult at times in the high
mountain passes along I-80 Sunday and moreso Wed/Thur time frame.
Stay tuned for greater details as we move into next week.

Weather Details: H7-H5 southwest flow will be ongoing Sunday with
the approach of a shortwave trough shifting towards to just south
of the WY/CO border. A lee-side surface low is progged to develop
near or right over southeast Wyoming Sunday afternoon with a
surface cold front across north Wyoming. The surface low will then
drop southeast and then back east across NE/KS line. This
trajectory does not readily favor upslope flow across the High
Plains with models indicating west flow through much of the event.
The southwest to west winds will favor orographic supported snow
for the mountains but the High Plains may miss out on any
substantial precipitation. Snow totals over the High Plains have
trended lower over the past four runs of the GFS with the ECMWF
also indicating downsloping side-effects in QPF fields. A colder
airmass will backdoor and wedge up against the Laramie Mountain
Range Monday into Tuesday as southwest flow becomes re-
established.

By Wednesday into Thursday, a phasing two-trough system into one
looks to occur over the Rockies that will help drive the cold
front south while increasing synoptic lift and upslope flow over
southeast Wyoming. This system will have a greater chance of
higher snow production across the High Plains and result in
potential travel impacts. Stay tuned into next week on this
evolving system.

Issued at 308 AM MST Fri Feb 1 2019

Elevated fire weather concerns today and into the weekend as relative
humidity values will drop to between 20 to 30 percent across the High
Plains of Wyoming and Nebraska Panhandle. Winds will increase late
tonight and through the day Saturday across these same areas upwards
of 30 to 40 mph at times. Recent snow and near record low Energy Release
Components (ERC) should preclude a more significant fire danger.

Dry and well-above normal conditions will continue this weekend until
a cold front moves through Sunday. Mountain snow with some High Plains
rain will increase in coverage with the along and ahead of the front.
A cooler and more unsettled weather pattern will occur next week.

A High Wind Watch is in effect from late tonight through early
Sunday morning as winds look to increase upwards of 35 to 45 mph
with gusts to 65 mph being possible.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...SATURDAY THROUGH THURSDAY

Continued potential for high winds will occur Saturday into early
Sunday morning with 35 to 45 mph sustained values and gusts
upwards of 65 mph. Blowoff and blow over risk will increase
Saturday along the I-80 and I-25 corridors, especially for light,
high profile vehicles. Winds will decrease early Sunday morning
but some 40 to 60 mph winds will be possible into Sunday
afternoon near Arlington and Elk Mountain.
