.SYNOPSIS...
A significant winter storm will target the area late Monday
through Tuesday, with snow spreading in from the south late
Monday afternoon. The precipitation will be heaviest from
Monday night into Tuesday with accumulating snow followed by an
extended period of sleet or freezing rain on Tuesday. Many
locations could then go to plain rain on Tuesday. Very windy and
moderately colder conditions will push back into the region for
Wednesday.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THIS MORNING/...
Steadiest snowfall associated with WAA within UVV associated
with elongated 5h shear axis which extends from central IL/IN to
central PA is exiting my southeastern zones very early this
morning. Persistent weak forcing INVOF the aforementioned 5h
shear axis will keep isold to scattered coverage of mainly light
snow showers going across the forecast area overnight with
little in the way of additional accums. Earlier concerns for
fzdz don't seem to have panned out, at least thus far, and given
IR trends for cloud seeders to be returning to all of my
forecast area in the next hour or two, have removed the
widespread mentions of freezing drizzle which had been
advertised.

Will keep Headlines as is but anticipate upgrade to Winter Storm
Warning for ice over Somerset County, and then likely holding
onto Winter Storm Watches farther northeast given still quite a
bit of uncertainty in ptypes later Monday night into Tuesday.

Hourly temps and early morning mins will vary from the lower
20s across the Northern Mountains to near 30F in the Metro Areas
of the Lower Susq Valley. these temps will be 7-12F above
average with the greatest departures occurring across the Laurel
Highlands of Southwestern PA.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH 6 PM TUESDAY/...
After a very brief break in the precip for Monday morning in the
south, the first wave of precip from the big storm will lift
northward. The northern tier may wait all day to get any snow.
The precip type does start to change across the Laurels and SC
mtns by sunset. The threat for freezing rain becomes real in the
aftn. On the whole, this storm looks so marginal in every
category if you only look at the straight numbers vs exact
thresholds of each type of precip. The snow will be followed by
a significant time of freezing rain with some sleet in there,
too. Watch posted for all but Warren Co, where it looks like an
advy will likely be the best course of action. However, all
other areas could be jst bad enough looking at the big picture,
esp the Mon PM and Tues AM commutes, to warrant a watch at this
point. Do expect that not all of the watch area will eventually
be converted to a warning, but all of them will certainly get at
least advy criteria/impacts.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Active weather pattern in store for the coming week, with the
main wintry precipitation threat impacting the region Monday
into Tuesday. Quite windy on Wednesday, then another storm
system progged for Fri/Sat.

The main system of consequence will affect our region later
Monday into Tuesday, in the form of a storm system tracking
from the central Plains northeastward through the Great Lakes
region. A storm track of this nature west of the Commonwealth
will pull in enough warm air aloft for a gradual transition
from snow to a wintry mix to plain rain. However, with a
stubborn cold surface high sitting up across eastern Ontario
and Quebec, surface-based cold air will be tough to dislodge
over much of central PA east of the higher ridges. The strength
of the northerly ageostrophic flow late Monday night into
Tuesday, along with model sounding profiles, continue to
indicate that a prolonged period of snow/sleet is likely over
the central and northern areas, with a transition to freezing
rain gradually working in from SW to NE. The last couple model
cycles have remained pretty solid on this transition, with a
gradual lean toward a slower p-type transition. WPC guidance
mirrors this trend, with fcst snow amounts edging upward to
around 6" where snow lingers the longest.

Over southern areas, scenario setting up for a variety of
wintry precip types as warm air moves in initially aloft and
more gradually at the surface setting up a transition from snow
and sleet to a potential extended period of freezing rain before
finally ending as plain rain by mid-late Tues.

An moderate to high, adverse impact from the snow, sleet and
freezing rain is very likely on the morning commute Tuesday,
with rain (or lingering freezing rain Central and Northern PA)
for the evening commute. A winter storm watch has been issued
for most of the region containing the potential hazards for
various portions of the CWA.

As colder westerly flow takes over later Tuesday night into
Wednesday, snow showers and flurries will develop in the
mountains and northern tier. Our far northwestern counties
(Warren and McKean) stand the best chance to see some
accumulations, with probable enhancement from Lake Erie. Bigger
impact for the region will be potential for strong winds, with
gusts to 50 mph possible in strong pressure gradient behind
exiting storm system.

Thursday should quiet down with high pressure building across
the northeastern states. Extended models beginning to settle
into better agreement on the potential for another storm system
Fri into Sat. Decent warm air ahead of this system should keep
much of the precip rain on Fri, though a wintry mix poss over
northern half. Shot of colder air for Sat will bring risk for
some light snow over mainly NW half as breezy westerly flow
returns.

.AVIATION /09Z MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Sent out some updated TAFS as of 330 am.

Other than JST and THV the last few minutes, conditions not as
bad as the 06Z TAF package called for. Also patches of snow
still at times falling along the MD line, so made some
adjustments based on this area of snow.

Expect some snow along the MD line for much of the day.

More in the way of steadier snow will move into the area from
south to north later this afternoon and evening.

Some freezing rain and sleet could mix with the snow by later
this evening across the Laurel Highlands (JST).

Snow will likely mix with or change to sleet and freezing rain
on Tuesday across much of the area. The far southeast could see
a change to just rain.

The steady precipitation will likely taper off from southwest to
northeast Tuesday evening.

Winds will become gusty on Wed.
