.SYNOPSIS...
A polar plunge of arctic air will follow the winter storm with
sharply falling temperatures today potentially leading to rapid
freeze-ups and additional travel disruptions. Frigid temperatures
and blustery winds will produce bitter cold to dangerous wind
chills tonight into Monday. Temperatures will trend milder on
Tuesday with the next storm system likely bringing mixed
precipitation on Wednesday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
*Winter storm impacts shifting from snow/icy mix to bitter cold
*Dangerous wind chills tonight into early Monday morning

Mixed precip transition zone has shifted north of I-80 allowing
for changeover from snow to sleet/freezing rain/rain at
KDUJ/KFIG/KUNV/KIPT. Expect stripe of icy mix or rain along the
I-99/US-220 corridor through 12Z with plain rain southeast of
I-81. We will likely drop the winter wx advisory for the lower
Susquehanna Valley with the next update.

Radar trends show precip filling in the dry slot lifting
northeast across nrn WV into SW PA. Band of moderate snow should
expand over the northern tier. Hires models show the back edge
of precip shield transitioning back to snow as it pivots into
central PA through late morning. The heaviest snow (additional
2-4") through 12Z will be confined to the northern tier
counties/US-6 corridor. An additional coating to 1 inch is
possible in the 12-18Z timeframe across the northwest 1/2 of the
CWA especially in the Laurel Highlands and Endless Mtns.

As snow and mixed precip comes to an end in most places by
midday, focus will shift to impacts associated with an arctic
blast of brutally cold air this afternoon through tonight. Gusty
northwest winds will direct much colder air into the region as
the storm pulls away. High temps today will occur in the morning
with temperatures expected to fall through the afternoon,
reaching the single digits and teens by evening.

Gusty winds combined with the frigid temperatures will result
in bitter cold to dangerous wind chills in the 10 to 25F below
zero range. Windy conditions may also contribute to blowing and
drifting snow over the norther tier. Plan to issue wind chill
advisories/warnings with the next update.

The plummeting temperatures could result in a rapid freeze up
of slush/standing water on roads and lead to additional travel
problems. The brutal cold will hinder storm clean-up/snow
removal and recovery efforts.

Despite the surge of arctic air charging across the Grt Lks,
low PWAT air and low inversion heights will result in little
lake effect snow across the snowbelt and favored upslope areas.

.SHORT TERM /MONDAY THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/...
Very cold temperatures to start next week with highs in the
single digits to low teens with subzero wind chills.
Temperatures will trend milder through midweek. Scattered snow
showers and flurries will linger on Monday. Clearing skies and
fresh snow cover under strong arctic high pressure may produce
the coldest minimum temps Tuesday morning. Fair wx expected
Tuesday with some recovery in temperatures.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Another shot of wintry weather appears likely toward midweek.
The pattern looks to remain fairly active with the potential for
more storms followed by cold shots through next weekend.

.AVIATION /07Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Steady precipitation shield starting to show some erosion in the
west, but still overall a fairly large area of precipitation
remains across central Pennsylvania.

Mainly snow continues north of I-80 corridor at 06z, but PL/FZRA
widespread south of this, with just plain rain across the far
south and southeast. Mixed precipitation making a strong push
northward, and expecting KIPT and KUNV to likely transition to
all PL, if not FZRA.

Precipitation will transition back to snow on the very backside
of the system as it exits to the east during the morning.

Behind the system, snow showers will linger across the northern
and western mountains during the day. Strong winds will cause
some blowing snow across the north, where no ice fell, and will
likely affect KBFD. Overall, conditions improving to MVFR across
the mountains, with eventual VFR elsewhere.
