.SYNOPSIS...
Developing low pressure over the southern plains will track
northeast through the Great Lakes midweek. A cold front
swinging through Pennsylvania will bring showers with gusty
winds Wednesday into Thursday. High pressure will build into the
region late in the week, then another storm system will move
into Pennsylvania from the midwest next weekend.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...

High pressure over the region will bring fair weather and warm
temperatures today. The cold morning temps are being scoured
out. The abundant sunshine and a return to southerly flow
should allow temperatures to rise well above seasonal averages,
with maxes mostly in the 50s with max temps topping out around
60F in the southern valleys. Thickening high clouds are expected
to rapidly overspread the area during late afternoon/early
evening ahead of low pressure in the Miss Valley.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/...
An anomalous southerly low level jet and associated plume of
Gulf of Mexico moisture will push into the region Wednesday
morning. The main precipitation type will be a period of rain.
Expect the steady rain to push east of the area during the
afternoon, as the low level jet and plume of deepest moisture
exits the area and much of central PA breaks into the warm
sector ahead of approaching cold front. Scattered showers are
likely to accompany the passage of the cold front during the
late afternoon and early evening. Strong forcing ahead of upper
level low, combined with a bit of cape in the models, even
support mention of possible thunder over the northwest counties
during the afternoon.
 Latest models show mixed precipitation then transitioning to
snow behind the front. Any lake enhancement could bring some
snow accumulations in the NW mtns.

Behind the front, the focus of the forecast will shift toward
the potential of damaging wind gusts Wed evening into early
Thursday. Models lending increasing confidence in a
non-convective high wind event, with a strong pressure gradient,
strong subsidence and steep low level lapse rates all progged in
the wake of cold front. Model soundings currently suggest the
highest risk of damaging wind gusts will be across the south
central mountains, where gusts to 50kts are not out of the
question. This threat is in the HWO and will determine if any
headlines are needed for this afternoon.

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
Colder and blustery northwest flow should yield orographic
snow showers over the Allegheny Plateau Wednesday night into
Thursday. Any accumulations are expected to be light due to marginal
surface temperatures and a 260 degree boundary layer flow
keeping primary lake effect band north of the area. Expect
diminishing wind and fair weather Thursday night into Friday, as
high pressure builds into the state.

00Z NAEFS and ECENS both track a weakening upper low eastward
into Pa next weekend. Despite the weakening, a plume of deep
moisture overrunning a moderately cold air mass is very likely
to produce precipitation across the area Sat/Sun, some of which
could be frozen. Latest GEFS plumes and operational runs suggest
there will be too much warm air aloft for significant snow, but
icing is a real possibility across the higher terrain of
central Pa. The deepest moisture is likely to be shifting east
of the area by late in the weekend in association with secondary
coastal development. However, passage of upper low could be
accompanied by light snow/snow showers late Sunday into Monday.

VFR conditions will prevail today an tonight across central PA
with just some periods of mainly mid-level clouds AOA 10 KFT
AGL.

Becoming windy Wednesday afternoon with gusts 40+kt possible
from 270-320 degrees. Rain showers early; transitioning to snow
showers late with probable restrictions across the north/west
airspace.

Strong, gusty winds are likely to develop across the region late
Wednesday into part of Thursday. Some of the wind gusts could be
strong enough to bring down tree limbs and cause isolated power
outages, especially along the interstate 99 corridor south of State
College.

A wintry mix is possible across parts of Pennsylvania next weekend,
especially the north central part of the state.
