Area forecast discussion, Nov 11, 12:30 AM EST, 2 hours 35 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Cleveland OH
1230 AM EST Mon Nov 11 2019

...06z Aviation Forecast Update...

.SYNOPSIS...
A cold front will settle south across the area tonight. Low pressure
will strengthen as it tracks northeast through the Ohio Valley on
Monday reaching the New England Coast Monday night. A deepening
upper level trough will usher in the coldest air of the season
across the region by Tuesday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
Update...No changes for the update.

Original...Winter Weather Watches and Advisories have been
issued for portions of the area beginning on Monday as a winter
weather system impacts the region. Precipitation can already be
seen developing across Lake Erie late this afternoon as
overrunning is ongoing to the north of a cold front. At 4 PM the
cold front was located just south of Lake Erie, extending from
near Erie PA to Cleveland to Bowling Green. The front will reach
southern Ohio by Monday morning. Precipitation will be slow to
expand as deeper moisture and better forcing remains mostly over
Lake Erie or near the lakeshore overnight. As the upper level
trough deepens across the Midwest on Monday, a wave of low
pressure will develop along the front and track across southern
Ohio to central Pennsylvania by Monday evening. Locations along
the I-75 corridor will be cooler on Monday as colder air is
pulled in from the northwest with an early transition to snow
while areas farther east will remain warm enough for a mix or
primarily rain during the daytime hours. A Winter Weather
Advisory has been issued for Lucas/Wood/Hancock counties for 2
to 5 inches of snow on Monday. Fringe counties to the east are
expecting slightly lower amounts but may need to be added if the
change over occurs sooner. It is worth noting that both the 12Z
NAM and ECMWF have trended upward with qpf, likely a result of
favorable entrance region jet dynamics which is why the snowfall
forecast has increased.

To the east, expecting the transition to snow to occur quickly as we
move towards sunset. Most areas outside the headlines will see at
least 1-2 inches of snow. Across the north, amounts are expected to
be higher as low level convergence ramps up along the lakeshore with
an orographic contribution as well. Lake enhancement is expected
Monday night with much of the primary snowbelt seeing 2 to 4 inches
of snow before the system pulls away. Lake effect snow will then
ramp up heading into Tuesday with deeper moisture in the wake of the
700mb trough swinging across Lake Erie. Temperatures on Monday night
fall into the upper 20s so snow should begin to stick even closer to
the lakeshore but certainly favoring highest amounts for inland
areas. North to northwest winds of 10 to 15 mph with gusts to
25 mph can also be expected.

&&

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/...
Heavy lake effect snow will continue through the day on Tuesday with
a multiple band setup, with a more intense band extending from Lake
Huron. Very cold air aloft will continue to be advected into the
region, with 850 mb temperatures dropping down to as low as -16 deg
C by 18Z Tuesday. This cold air aloft, combined with warm lake
surface temperatures of 8 to 10 deg C, will generate extreme
instability, with lake-induced CAPE in excess of 1,000 J/kg. Cloud
depths are expected to be greater than 10,000 feet all day Tuesday.
With this much instability, thundersnow will be possible in any of
the intense bands that set up. On Tuesday morning, the heaviest lake
effect will be ongoing from Cuyahoga County to northwest
Pennsylvania. Through the day and into Tuesday night, lake effect
bands will slowly shift to the east and become more focused over the
primary snow belt as northerly flow becomes more northwest. The
multi-band setup and slow shifting in the major lake effect bands
will result in snow totals becoming somewhat dispersed across much
of the snowbelt. Lake effect snow will slowly become less intense
through Tuesday night and diminish during the day on Wednesday. Lake
effect snow is expected to completely end by 18Z Wednesday when the
850 mb ridge swings across Lake Erie. When it is all said and done
storm total snow is expected to be around 8 to 10 inches from
eastern Cuyahoga County to northwest Pennsylvania with the chance
for higher amounts, which is heavily dependent on where the
strongest lake effect bands form. For these reasons, a Winter Storm
Watch has been issued for Cuyahoga, Geauga, Ashtabula, Erie, and
Crawford Counties through Wednesday.

In addition to heavy snow, record-breaking cold temperatures are
likely on Tuesday and Wednesday as an arctic high crosses the Ohio
Valley. Many climate sites are forecast to break their record
coldest high on Tuesday afternoon and record coldest low on
Wednesday morning. Highs on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon are
forecast to remain below freezing and Wednesday's lows are forecast
to be in the teens with some inland areas getting as low as the
single digits.

&&

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
A warming trend begins on Thursday as high pressure moves off to the
east, though temperatures will still remain well below average
through the long term period. A weak clipper system will bring the
chance for light snow showers Wednesday night into Thursday. After
that, weather becomes more quiescent as high pressure influences the
local weather on Friday and Saturday.

&&

.AVIATION /06Z Monday THROUGH Friday/...
A cold front will continue to drop southeast across the area
through early Monday morning. Ceilings will eventually drop
through MVFR to widespread IFR through the early morning hours.
Light rain and snow mix will develop and spread from west to
east across the area Monday morning transitioning into light to
moderate snow by late Monday afternoon into the evening. IFR
ceilings and visibilities are expected with the snow through the
evening hours with some potential for occasionally dropping to
LIFR at times.

.OUTLOOK...Non-VFR Monday night. Non-VFR expected Tuesday into
Wednesday north central and northeast Ohio into nwrn PA in lake
effect snow. Non-VFR possible Wednesday night into Thursday all
areas.

&&

.MARINE...
A cold front will move southeast across Lake Erie this evening and
stall across southeast Ohio and northern Pennsylvania. Low pressure
will develop along with front over the Ohio Valley on Monday and
progress northeast to the New England coast by Tuesday. This
progression will cause the development of north to northeast winds
of 15 to 25 knots to develop Monday afternoon and shift to northwest
winds by Tuesday afternoon. Northwest winds will remain in the 15
to 25 knot range through Wednesday morning. Because of the elevated
winds and high waves, a Small Craft Advisory has been issued for all
Lake Erie nearshore zones from late Monday morning to late Tuesday
night. A strong arctic high will move east across the Ohio Valley on
Wednesday and will be located over New England by Thursday. This
will induce southerly winds over Lake Erie on Wednesday and
Thursday.

&&

.CLIMATE...
Arctic air will move southeast into the local area Monday night
into Tuesday and then begin to shift east Tuesday night. The
unseasonably cold air will cause temperatures to plummet to some
of the coldest readings so far this season.

Below are the coldest temperatures on record for selected dates
