Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Cleveland OH
1250 AM EST Tue Nov 26 2019
.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure over the arrowhead of Minnesota will continue east
tonight through the northern Great Lakes and into Canada. A low
pressure system will develop on Tuesday over the southern Plains
and extend a warm front north towards the Ohio Valley. This low
will track northeast towards the Great Lakes for Wednesday and
deepen. This low will continue east off the New England coast by
Thursday morning. High pressure will ridge south from Canada on
Thursday and linger over the Great Lakes region for Friday.
&&
.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
Forecast is on track and no changes were made with this late
evening update.
Previous discussion...
An upper ridge over the eastern United States has supported an
area of high pressure over the East Coast. Dry air and some
modest warm air advection over the region has allowed for mostly
sunny skies and temperatures to warm into the 50s across the
entire area this afternoon. For much of this evening, expecting
this feature to remain in place and will keep a dry forecast
with temperatures slowly cooling into the 40s overnight with
this warm air advection regime. A low pressure system moving
over the northern Lakes tonight will allow for some low level
moisture to pool over the region as warm front approach from the
southwest. Have increasing cloud cover over the region tonight
with some lower stratus attempting to redevelop over the region.
This cloud cover will keep lows in the 40s or near 40 across
the area.
For Tuesday, all eyes will be on the development of a low
pressure system over the southern Plains as an upper trough
pushes off the Rockies and supports cyclogenesis over the
central CONUS. This low will extend a warm front north towards
the Ohio Valley on Tuesday and warm air will continue to flow
into the region and highs will once again reach the 50s.
Believe that much of Tuesday ends up dry as the deeper lift will
be closest to the ejecting trough, which points more towards
Tuesday night for widespread rain over the region and therefore
have PoPs trending up through the end of the period as the low
moves closer to the region. With the area ahead of the low and
in the warm sector, expecting southeast to south winds to
increase at the surface as the pressure gradient increases. Much
of the region may see 30 to 35 mph wind gusts late Tuesday
night with some higher gusts possible in downslope regions,
especially near Lake Erie. With a warm air advection regime and
gusty winds, overnight lows on Tuesday will not cool all that
much with lows occurring near sunset on Tuesday night and rising
through the night into the 50s.
&&
.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/...
A very active period is in store as a strong low pressure system
moves through the Great Lakes to off the New England coast and its
attendant cold front sweeps across the region on Wednesday. The GFS
and ECMWF are rather consistent in this time frame with the position
of the surface low and fropa across the region which leads to high
confidence. Rather strong winds fields aloft will be able to mix
down to the surface behind the front and Wind headlines will likely
be needed for Wednesday from late morning into the early evening
mainly along the lakeshore and west of I-71. Winds could gust over
50 mph Wednesday starting in the west in the late morning and spread
to the east by early afternoon. Near ERI locally higher downslope
south to southeast winds could reach wind advisory threshold ahead
of the front in the morning. Wind advisory criteria will likely be
reached on Wednesday and persist into the early evening in the east
especially near the lakeshore. Did not issue a High Wind Watch
as confidence in 60 mph wind gusts remains low at this time and
will need to be monitored going forward. Rain will be likely in
the morning ahead of the front and then a pronounced dry slot
will sweep into the region along with the cold front.
Precipitation will greatly diminish. Wrap around moisture will
rotate across the north later in the afternoon and early evening
as cold advection overspreads the region. Showers could mix
with or change to snow showers mainly over far northeast Ohio
and nw PA Wednesday night.
Thanksgiving Day and night will be calmer and cooler with dry
conditions and diminishing winds as high pressure gradually builds
over the region.
&&
.LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
Fair weather is expected on Friday as high pressure shifts east of
the region but then conditions will deteriorate as another rather
intense low pressure system moves over the region for the weekend.
There are timing differences between the models so confidence is
somewhat low in the timing of the cold frontal position and
attendant weather of the warm sector and following cold sector.
There could be some mixed precipitation Friday night as isentropic
lift overspreads the area which should change to rain on Saturday.
Colder air will spread into the region later Sunday as the upper low
approaches.
&&
.AVIATION /06Z Tuesday THROUGH Saturday/...
Added a mention of some LLWS early in the TAF forecast for the
first few hours as there is a bit of a low level jet overhead.
Radar estimates reveal this. Guidance suggest it will be
weakening overnight. Otherwise a cold front from the northwest
will be nearing TOL around 12Z. Low level moisture is there, but
limited and may or may not materialize into MVFR stratus for a
time in the morning. Have scaled back from the previous forecast
based on upstream obs. Upstream as soon as the cirrus leaves
MVFR vsby is developing. Did include a tempo for MVFR vsby at
TOL too. Other terminals will remain VFR through the period.
Non-VFR will be encroaching the western terminals toward 03Z
WED. South winds of 5 to 10 knots will back to the south-
southeast for the day Tuesday (and easterly for TOL). Tuesday
evening those south-southeast winds will begin to increase. May
see a few isolated gusts around 20 knots by the end of the TAF
period.
.OUTLOOK...Non-VFR conditions and gusty winds in excess of 25
knots likely Tuesday night. Non-VFR and gusts in excess of 35
knots likely Wednesday. Non- VFR conditions continue throughout
the day Thursday and into Friday morning. Non-VFR possible
Saturday afternoon.
&&
.MARINE...
Fairly tranquil condition prevail over the lake this afternoon
as winds subside and this trend will continue overnight and
Tuesday as high pressure persist over the southeast states and
weak ridging extends towards Lake Erie. As low pressure deepens
and moves toward the Great Lakes Tuesday night and Wednesday...the
pressure gradient will tighten considerably and winds will
increase. Southeasterly winds Tuesday night will veer to south
and increase to near 25 knots by Wednesday morning. As a cold
front crosses the lake Wednesday...winds will veer to the
southwest and then west and increase to 35-40 knot gales into
Wednesday night. Winds will veer to the northwest and diminish
on Thursday. A Gale watch has been issued for Lake Erie for
Wednesday and much of Wednesday night. High pressure will build
over the lake for the later part of the week and winds will drop
below headline criteria. Another low pressure area will
approach the lake over the weekend but be further south and
perhaps cross the lake. Winds fields will be weaker than the
pre-Thanksgiving storm.
