Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Cleveland OH 107 PM EST Sun Dec 29 2019 ...18Z Aviation Update... .SYNOPSIS... Low pressure centered over northern Iowa will slowly meander northeast today, extending a warm front north across the area by this afternoon. As this low occludes over the Upper Midwest, another low enters from the south tonight and deepens as it moves north along the occluded front on Monday. This low continues north on Monday night and its associated cold front will extend east across the area by Tuesday. A ridge of high pressure enters the region for Wednesday and lingers just east of the area through Thursday. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH MONDAY/... Forecast generally on track with some reduction in rain in northwest Ohio, expected to fill back in tonight. Rain over the area extends back into the Gulf so several more hours of rain in store for the area. A pocket of drier air in the low levels has eroded some of the rain intensity for the afternoon so have shaved a few tenths of an inch off of storm totals, still expected to be around an inch by the end of the event highest in the south. Temperatures and dew points on pace as they should be, expected to peak around 60 for highs in most of Ohio and low to mid 50s in NW PA. Prev Discussion... Deep surface low is dominating weather conditions across the central U.S. today. Moisture streaming into the local area due to a strong low level jet, +DPVA, and impressive upper level dynamics around the base of the upper trough. ILN morning sounding reporting precipitable water values of 1.2", near a record high for this time of year, and 3 standard deviations above normal. Frontal forcing and low level convergence and instability are limited kept thunder mention main in the southern counties. Dew points will continue to rise as the warm air advection continues through the day with Td in the mid to upper 50s, with some temps in the 60s mainly in the southern counties. Some breaks in the rain are possible today, especially in NW OH where a brief dry slot could move in this afternoon/early evening as visible by satellite upstream. Precip will fill back in and then by early Monday morning the cooling of the column will support a period of instability with capes around 200j/kg, weak but sufficient for isolated convection. This will coincide with a strong LLJ around 60KT for a couple hours before dawn, so will need to monitor any convection for potential to mix down some 40mph winds or stronger. Rainfall amounts will average an inch for much of the area, some higher amounts possible south of the US 30 corridor. Rivers already low at the onset of the event should be able to handle an inch of runoff. Areas that receive higher amounts could see some smaller streams and tributaries come out of their banks. As this low moves north, west of the forecast area, dry air will begin wrapping around the system and rain coverage will become more scattered for Monday. The low will then extend the cold front across the area. The best chance for rain will be areas east where dry air will be less impactful and there may be some lake enhancement. High temperatures will remain above normal ahead of the cold front perhaps into the 50s again in several locations. && .SHORT TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/... The vertically-stacked low is still expected to move eastward from near Lake Superior to near Georgian Bay during the Monday night through Tuesday timeframe. Simultaneously, multiple shortwave troughs should revolve around this vertically-stacked low and a secondary cold front should cross our CWA from west to east on Tuesday. Periods of rain and/or wet snow remain possible across the CWA Monday night and Tuesday, with the best potential for snow during the colder nighttime hours. Of note, the airmass over Lake Erie should become cold enough for lake enhanced precip on Tuesday. At first, this lake enhanced precip should remain over the lake and be directed toward parts of southern ON and western NY due to southwesterly low-level flow. However, during Tuesday afternoon and early evening, the low-level flow should veer to westerly and allow multiple bands of lake enhanced precip to shift southward into our snowbelt counties, especially those in the primary snowbelt. Any snow accumulations should be an inch or less through Tuesday, but localized amounts of 1 to 2 inches are possible in the higher terrain of northwest PA. Morning low temperatures in the lower to mid 30's and afternoon highs in the mid to upper 30's are expected on Tuesday. Tuesday night, the vertically-stacked low moves farther east from Georgian Bay to southwestern Quebec and weakens further through daybreak Wednesday. Simultaneously, high pressure at the surface and aloft begins to build over our CWA from the west and southwest. Lake enhanced precip will transition to pure lake effect precip across the primary snowbelt as a westerly low-level flow of cold air continues crossing Lake Erie. Elsewhere, any lingering precip should end by midnight. The bulk of any precip Tuesday night will likely fall as snow. Additional snow accumulations of less than one inch are possible outside of the primary snowbelt. The primary snowbelt itself could receive another 1 to 3 inches of snow from lake effect. Low temperatures should reach the mid 20's to lower 30's. The aforementioned ridge should crest over our CWA on Wednesday, allowing any lingering lake effect precip over the primary snow belt to end by nightfall. The bulk of this lake effect precip will likely fall as snow and additional snow accumulations should be an inch or less. Fair weather is expected elsewhere and Wednesday afternoon highs should reach the 30's. The high pressure ridge will continue affecting our region Wednesday night as it begins to move farther east. This should allow fair weather to occur across the entire CWA as low temperatures reach the mid 20's to lower 30's. && .LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/... On Thursday, odds now favor fair weather in the morning, but rain showers should begin overspreading our region from the southwest during the afternoon via warm air advection/isentropic lift ahead of an eastward-moving cold front approaching the Upper Great Lakes and Mid-Mississippi Valley. Thursday's highs should reach the lower to mid 40's. Rain showers should then continue Thursday night as warm air advection/isentropic lift persist ahead of the eastward-moving cold front and the parent trough aloft becomes positioned over the central United States. Wet snow may mix with the rain showers, especially in the higher terrain of northwest PA. Low temperatures should reach the mid to upper 30's. Forecast confidence decreases somewhat for Friday through Saturday due to greater spread in model guidance. In general, the cold front should sweep east across our forecast area on Friday as the trough axis aloft continues approaching from the west. Thus, additional periods of precip, mainly in the form of rain, are expected along the front itself and due to warm air advection/isentropic lift ahead of the front. Prior to the cold frontal passage, high temperatures should reach the 40's to perhaps 50 degrees on Friday. Surface high pressure may build briefly over our area Friday night into Saturday morning. By Saturday afternoon, a low and trailing cold front may begin to approach our CWA from the Upper Midwest. Aloft, net troughing should persist over northern OH and northwest PA. Scattered showers remain possible through the period, especially Friday night and again Saturday afternoon. Wet snow may mix with these rain showers, especially Friday night. After low temperatures in the 30's Friday night, Saturday should have highs in the lower to mid 40's. && .AVIATION /18Z Sunday THROUGH Friday/... There is a mixed-bag of conditions across the area this afternoon with VFR starting to emerge in our western TAF sites and IFR conditions associated with low ceilings and visibility in the eastern sites (YNG/ERI/CAK). This area of VFR is associated with dry air filtering in across northwest Ohio. MVFR and IFR conditions will fill back in across this area late tonight into tomorrow morning as a second plume of moisture arrives from the southwest. Meanwhile, expecting the eastern half will remain in MVFR and IFR conditions as rain continues across the area this evening and overnight. Winds this afternoon are primarily are out of the south at 10-15 kts with some gusts up to 20 kts. A deepening low pressure system will meander over the Upper Midwest and Upper Great Lakes today through Monday before becoming centered near northern Lake Michigan by daybreak Tuesday. Easterly to southeasterly winds of about 10 to 15 knots are expected over Lake Erie today. Winds should then veer to southerly and then southwesterly Monday morning and increase to about 15 to 20 knots. These southwesterly winds will then persist through daybreak Tuesday. Waves should be no larger than 1 to 3 feet in nearshore waters through daybreak Tuesday. In open waters, waves should trend 1 to 3 feet today before building to about 3 to 6 feet Monday through daybreak Tuesday. The largest waves are expected in the central and eastern basins. The low will then move eastward from the Upper Great Lakes to the Canadian Maritimes later Tuesday morning through Wednesday as high pressure eventually builds from the southwest and west. Southwesterly to westerly winds as strong as 20 to 25 knots are expected later Tuesday morning into Wednesday. A Small Craft Advisory will likely be needed during this time period. The largest waves are once again likely in the central and eastern basins.
