  water datum, or 35 inches above the critical mark for safe
  navigation. Strong west-southwest winds will arrive over the
  west end of Lake Erie with a strong cold front tonight. The
  water level will drop below the critical mark for safe
  navigation tonight and remain below that threshold through the
  first half of Friday. 

* Impacts...Mariners should be alert for the possibility of
  grounding on the bottom of the lake due to the low water levels.

.SYNOPSIS...
A stationary front extended along the south shore of Lake Erie,
west into northwest Ohio. This front will drift south through
the evening before lifting back north as a warm front Thursday
ahead of low pressure moving into Michigan. The low will
continue northeast across the central Great Lakes Thursday night
forcing a cold front east across the local area in it's wake.
High pressure will build into the area for the weekend.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
Only minor changes were made to reflect current trends.
Of concern at this time is the convection developing over
Missouri. This area of thunderstorms will likely have a good
change to move over the region with some locally heavy rainfall
expected. More details to come.

Previous Discussion...
Debated ending the Dense Fog Advisory for Lucas Co./Toledo as
visibility there has improved as was expected, but leery with
the lake nearby and a east-northeast wind developing later
tonight that may bring back lower visibility. Will hold on it
for now. Elsewhere, while visibility isn't as bas as it was
earlier, there are plenty of quarter mile and half mile reports
at the airports and would expect still a number of places still
still have less than a quarter of a mile. Otherwise with this
mid evening update have lowered precip chances and have a period
of dry conditions for most of the rest of the night. Showers
encroach in the morning from the southwest. Previous discussions
follow.

Expanded the area of the dense fog advisory (less than a quarter
mile visibility) to include far eastern OH and northwest PA.
Previous thinking and hi-res guidance suggests that visibility
improves from west to east overnight and the morning hours will
not be as bad, with the exception of the far east lakeshore.
Flow off of the cold lake and the proximity of the now nearly
stationary front/high levels of low level moisture/ground
moisture to blame. Previous discussion follows.

Fog developed through the afternoon given the 50 degree
dewpoints over the colder ground but was quite variable with
some areas at a half mile and others nearby at 10. In addition,
flow off the lake enhanced the fog across the north central and
northwest. Will have a dense fog advisory through the evening
and into the night for the western two thirds. Believe
visibilities will improve from the west beginning late this
evening as west flow and cooler air move in.

For the evening, radar trends show precip moving east out of
the area as expected if not a few hours ahead of schedule. Will
continue with low chance pops for the next couple hours and then
drop to slight chance. Will also continue with areas of fog
through the night. Visibilities are quite variable but generally
in the west were a mile or below. Elsewhere visibilities were
from 1 to 3 miles on avg. This may require a dense fog headline
at some point this evening. Otherwise, through the evening,
models show dry air aloft moving across the area before
returning after midnight from the southwest ahead of low
pressure moving through the central plains. Brought chance pops
back for after midnight west with chance pops reaching into the
remainder of northern OH by 5-6AM. For Thursday a warm front
will lift north into the area ahead of the low to our west. Deep
moisture will reach into the area with PW values reaching up to
1.4 to 1.5 inches. Not bad for Feb. In addition models suggest
cape values reach 250-500 J/KG. Given this potential will issue
a flood watch beginning late tonight and continuing through
Thursday into Thursday night. Any river ice will enhance the
potential. Drying moves in quickly Thursday night behind the
associated cold front. As precip ends a little snow may mix in
but not expecting much.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
The short term forecast period begins on Friday in the wake of a
cold front. Cold air advection surging over the region will allow
for precipitation type to change over to snow with 850 mb
temperatures crumbling back down to around -15C. Flow is favorable
for lake effect snow development, although intensity and coverage
will be uncertain with Lake Erie largely covered with ice. An upper
ridge begins building into the region for Friday night into Saturday
and will quickly squash any lake effect as surface high pressure
builds into the Great Lakes region. Temperatures through the period
will be below normal with highs in the 20s and lows in the teens
with single digits could be possible in NW PA.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
High pressure over the Great Lake region on Sunday will shift east
as a weak low ejects eastward from the Central Plains. This low will
be south of the area, allowing for the area to be on the cold side
of the system and in turn, all precipitation to be snow. So will
continue with the high chance to likely snow on Sunday night into
Monday, diminishing as the system continues off to the southeast of
the area. High pressure will nudge back into the area on Monday
night, allowing for another dry period. The extended guidance then
begins to diverge with the timing of the next system with a low
entering the western Great Lakes on Tuesday night. The forecast area
appears to be on the warm side of the system so any precipitation
would probably be rain but the timing of the low is off by about 24
hours between the guidance, so will limit pops to chance at best.
Temperatures through the period will be close to normal with the
warmest temperatures possible on Tuesday in the warm sector of the
low.

.AVIATION /06Z Thursday THROUGH Monday/...
IFR conditions are common with low ceilings and fog reducing
visibilities to under a mile and most locations. Rain will
spread in from southwest to northeast through the morning. Area
of thunderstorms over Missouri will move toward the area this
afternoon. Have only placed a vicinity thunder in the TAF's for
now and will fine tune this timing with later updates. Ceilings
will attempt to briefly improve ahead of a cold front this
afternoon into the evening but this will be when the
thunderstorms are in the area. Rain will end tomorrow evening
from west to east and may change to some snow.

Winds will be light and variable through sunrise then increase
from the southeast and south. The stronger winds will be during
the afternoon into the evening. Southerly winds will increase
to 15 to 25 knots during the afternoon. As the cold front
arrives winds will shift to a westerly direction with the
strongest gusts occurring in its wake. Gusts of 35 to 40 knots
may be possible.

OUTLOOK...Non-VFR through Friday morning. Non-VFR possible
again Sunday night into Monday.

.MARINE...
A stationary front hugging the lake this afternoon will allow for
northerly winds and dense fog to persist over the lake through a
good chunk of the evening into tonight. Eventually, this front will
pivot and easterly winds will return and fog will lift over the
basin. Low pressure will target the Great Lakes region on Thursday
and extend a cold front across the area on Thursday night. Strong
south winds will develop ahead of the low and will shift around to
the west with the cold frontal passage. West winds will be quite
strong and could be near gale force, potentially allowing for gale
headlines. West winds will continue through the day on Friday and
diminish as high pressure begins to settle in on Friday night into
Saturday. A weak low enters the region on Sunday, shifting winds to
the southeast, and then from the north as the system passes the lake
to the south. High pressure returns for Monday night into the first
half of Tuesday, allowing for light and variable winds.
