High pressure will build toward the area today and Wednesday
from the west and crest over the region Thursday night. Low
pressure will affect the area late Saturday into Sunday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Update...
The big story this afternoon continues to be with regard to the
gusty west winds and blowing snow, especially across the north.
Have received several reports of road closures across north-
south roads in northern Aroostook County due to blowing and
drifting snow.

Will continue the Wind Advisory through this afternoon and
continue to highlight the blowing and drifting snow along with
whiteout conditions at times. The wind chill advisories will
remain in place as they are, but we will likely need to bump the
advisory for the north Maine woods to a warning for tonight.
Only minor changes to ingest current temps/dew points at this
hour.

What should be a fairly straight-forward forecast is anything
but. The storm that brought snow to the area yda is spinning up
ovr Labrador attm and we are now left dealing with arctic air
pouring into the state. Sfc low wl try to mv into the North
Atlantic this aftn but wl be forced back to the west due to
blocking ovr Greenland. This keeps pressure gradient strong acrs
the area with wind gusts in excess of 40kts tda. Wl continue wind
advisory acrs the entire area until this evng. Wind gusts hv been
over-performing at times, especially with diurnal mixing.

Isolated snow showers can be expected acrs the north tda with
moisture streaming off the St. Lawrence in NW flow. May see ocnl
flurries this aftn as well acrs nrn Aroostook. The biggest hazard
though conts to be blowing and drifting snow along north-south
roads. This wl likely lead to ocnl whiteout conditions, especially
in open areas and near the lakes of nrn Maine.

Temps acrs the north wl struggle to rise and expect most locales wl
rmn under 5 degrees for highs this aftn. In combination with the
gusty winds, wind chills wl rise above -20F (advisory criteria) for
just a few hours this aftn bfr plummeting right back down tonight.
Hv extended WC advisory across the north into Wed aftn as it will be
very cold and dangerous to be outside. Day shift wl lkly need to
issue a wind chill warning for tonight from Moosehead Lake area
toward Ft. Kent with wind chills dropping blo -35F.

Further to the south expect wind chills to drop blo -20F for the
rest of the area around midnight tonight and continuing into Wed
morning, thus have issued wind chill advisory for this area from 04z-
15z Wed.

Even without the benefit of decoupling expect that low wl drop into
the minus teens across the north and blo zero everywhere.

.SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/...
High pressure centered over northern NY State at 12Z Wed slowly
builds toward the FA Through Thu.  There will continue to be a
moderate pressure gradient and steep low level lapse rates Wed.
Although not nearly as harsh as today, still expect enough wind
for patchy blowing snow and some drifting will continue. There
will also likely be some bitterly cold wind chills in the
morning that will remain below zero even into the afternoon. As
the high settles closer Wed night the wind slackens and may
become very light/calm in the northwest valleys. Certainly the
potential that a few of the normal cold spots could get down to
30 below. Thu will be a cold day, but with much less wind and
some sunshine it will certainly be the nicest day since the
storm arrived Sunday. Temperatures will be more typical of mid
January with highs in the teens north to mid 20s in the Greater
Bangor Region.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
High pres will be across the FA Thu night. Although the air mass
will not be as cold as the previous night, the combo of light/calm
wind, clear sky, and deep snowpack in the north will allow some of
the broad valleys to get very cold, and did lower the overnight lows
a bit in the valleys as a few spots could get down to 25 below.
High pres retreats Fri and the air mass moderates more with
afternoon temperatures to return to more seasonable levels, and
Fri very likely will be the nicest day of the week. There should
be a decent amount of sunshine too, with perhaps a few high
clouds in the afternoon well in advance of the next weather
system. Clouds increase Fri night and it will not be as cold as
recent nights, but may still drop to around or a little below
zero in the far northern valleys. Clouds continue to increase
Sat, but it looks like most areas remain dry during the
daylight hours. Low pressure advances toward the FA Sat night
with a secondary low to develop to the south. Snow will
overspread the area. There could be an initial shot of
overrunning snow in the north with a break for a time overnight.
Along the coast, there could be enough warm air for a rain/snow
mix at times Sat night ahead of the coastal low, but it should
switch back to snow by Sun morning. It should be noted that the
thermal profiles vary quite a bit between the models as does the
QPF and track of the secondary, so confidence on the final
evolution of the event is not high; however confidence on
an a winter weather event is high. As the coastal low moves
away Sun the snow will taper off Down East with snow likely to
continue in the north into Sun evening. At this time it looks
like it will likely be an advisory levels event, although can't
rule out some low level warning criteria snow; but it is not
going to be as impactful as the Sun event with its lingering
effect into mid week. Windy and cold to follow with perhaps some
borderline wind chill and/or blowing/drifting snow issues,
although the air mass does not look to be nearly as cold as the
one this week.

.AVIATION /18Z TUESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
NEAR TERM:
Update...Blowing snow will continue to be an issue at the
northern terminals today and into this evening, resulting in
reduced vsbys at times and local IFR/MFVR conditions. KBGR/KBHB
should remain VFR today.

SHORT TERM: Patchy MVFR possible at the northern Taf sites Wed in
patchy blowing snow, although expect predominately VFR
conditions. Otherwise, VFR Wed through Fri night. Ceilings will
likely lower to MVFR by afternoon or evening Sat, and eventually
to IFR and LIFR in snow Sat night into Sun, with a possible
rain/snow mix at BHB.

.MARINE...
NEAR TERM:
Update... A Gale Warning remains in effect through Wednesday
afternoon. Moderate freezing spray is expected today with freezing
spray becoming heavy this evening and continuing into Wed
morning. Heavy freezing spray warning has been extended into Wed.

SHORT TERM: Gales may continue into Wed morning with conditions to
gradually ease to SCA level by midday Wed. SCA condition likely
will continue into Wed evening. Heavy freezing spray is likely
Wed morning with light freezing spray likely during the
afternoon and evening. The heavy freezing spray warning has been
extended until 1 pm Wed. The next potential round of headlines
will likely hold off until later Sat night or Sun with either a
SCA or low end gales possible.
