Area Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
A cold front will slide east of the area this afternoon,
followed by high pressure and cooler temperatures and dry conditions
through this evening. The next system should bring wintry mix to the
region Wednesday into Thursday, with yet another wet system by
Friday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Early this afternoon a cold front has moved east of the area,
with dry conditions but lingering cloud cover. This boundary
will usher in cooler temperatures this afternoon. Highs for
most locations have already been reached today, with
temperatures falling to the lower 30s and upper 20s by late
afternoon.

A large area of high pressure will move into northern Ontario this
evening and extend south into the eastern Great Lakes. Cold, dry air
at the surface will filter into the region tonight. A brief clearing
and winds diminishing will also help temperatures fall to the
low to mid 20s in most areas, except around 10 across the North
Country. By late tonight, the next system will move northward
towards the Ohio River Valley. Warm air advection aloft will
begin across far western NY by Wednesday morning. The dry
airmass in place will keep a majority of the region dry however
a chance for freezing rain will enter the western Southern Tier
by 12z Wednesday.

&&

.SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/...
High pressure centered over western Quebec will maintain a flow of
cold air into the eastern Great Lakes Wednesday. A southern
stream low moving through the Ohio Valley and associated surface
warm front will bring increasing chances for precipitation. A
period of freezing rain looks increasingly likely Wednesday as
warm/moist isentropic ascent generates precipitation which will
fall into cold surface airmass residing over across western New
York. Consensus model precipitation amounts suggesting totals
amounts under a quarter inch. Storm total ice between the 0.1"
to 0.2" range. This will make for icy road conditions. North to
south thermal graident will be setting up through the day as
warmer air continues to push in from the south, with areas
along and south of the Thruway warming enough to change the
precipitation to rain before noon. The area from the Thruway
northward will remain colder longer and will have the better
chances to see the higher end glazing amounts, although these
amounts could be tempered downward a bit with some potential for
sleet or even some snow mixing in especially across the North
Country.

There will be a brief lull in widespread precipitation Wednesday
night into at least the first half of Thursday.

The pacific trough will begin moving over the Rockies resulting in
lee cyclogenesis across the plains Thursday. This system will
bring warm/moist advection aided by a stout low level jet.
Precipitation will once again break out across the area, starting
across far western New York by mid to late afternoon. if not a
bit sooner. then spread quickly east across the remainder of
the area through Thursday night. Strong warm air advection will
develop into the area as the surface low moves west of the area
across the western Great Lakes. Temperatures Thursday look to
be a solid 15 to 20 degrees above normal with most highs in the
upper 40s to mid 50s. The rainfall associated with this system
will need to be monitored closely as this could be a more
significant rainfall event with amounts potentially nearing an
inch. Rainfall amounts of this magnitude could certainly bring
some hydrologic concerns.

&&

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
The long term portion of the forecast will start with a strong
system moving from the Upper Great Lakes to Quebec Friday. A strong
trailing cold front will sweep across the eastern Great Lakes early
Friday morning. Any lingering rain showers will end from west to
east with the passage of the cold front. Strong cold advection will
bring falling temperatures through the day, and may generate some
lake effect snow showers east and northeast of the lakes by midday
or afternoon as the cold air deepens. The 12Z guidance has trended
much stronger with this system than the models yesterday, with a low
deepening to below 980mb by Friday afternoon across Quebec. The
track of the rapidly deepening low, strong cold advection, and
strong post-frontal winds aloft suggest the potential for a strong
wind event on Friday, especially in the typical areas northeast of
Lakes Erie and Ontario.

Lake effect snow showers will continue Friday night east of the
lakes, eventually moving to southeast of the lakes as boundary layer
flow becomes northwest. At this early juncture the setup for Lake
Ontario looks better than Erie, especially given the amount of ice
now found on Lake Erie. A few lake effect snow showers may linger
into Saturday morning southeast of Lake Ontario. High pressure will
then bring mainly dry conditions from late Saturday through Sunday.

Model guidance begins to diverge by early next week. The 12Z GFS
continues to show an elongated east/west frontal wave which would
bring a chance of snow Sunday night and Monday, while the ECMWF
keeps this wave suppressed well to the south with mainly dry
conditions. Given the model uncertainty, for now just introduced a
chance of snow for early next week.

Temperatures will fall to below normal later Friday through Saturday
night before trending to near normal by Sunday and Monday.

&&

.AVIATION /18Z TUESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Drier air has moved in behind a cold front, with improving
visibly region-wide. There still is some lingering stratus,
resulting in mainly MVFR conditions which will last well into
this afternoon.

High pressure in Canada will build south into the region
tonight, with conditions improving to VFR. Low pressure will
track to our south, with surface high pressure to the north
locking in cold air at the surface. This will result in several
hours of freezing rain south of Lake Ontario on Wednesday
morning. Precipitation will spread east Wednesday afternoon,
with temperatures very slowly warming above freezing south of
Lake Ontario.

Outlook...

Wednesday night...MVFR. Rain or freezing rain likely.
Thursday...IFR/MVFR with rain and possibly a thunderstorm.
Friday...IFR/MVFR windy with rain to snow. Saturday..VFR/MVFR
with a chance of snow showers. Sunday...VFR.

.MARINE...
Moderate westerly winds will gradually diminish through this
evening. Small Craft Advisories are in place through this
evening, before high pressure briefly builds in tonight with
lighter winds. Several additional systems will move through the
region later this week. The most significant will track north of
the area Thursday night, possibly resulting in gales on the
lakes late Thursday night and Friday.

.HYDROLOGY...
Temperatures are now cooling after two days with very warm
temperatures. A sizable amount of our snowpack across western
New York has runoff in areas rivers and creeks.

Despite all of the melting snow, only very modest rises in flow
has occurred on area creeks and rivers. Rainfall which moved
through overnight was fairly light, with amounts less than a
quarter inch. Although the low rainfall amounts was good news
for the area, as it did not add significantly to runoff into
rivers and streams, a bit more rainfall getting into the creeks
could have helped to flush out some of the ice jams which are
currently in place on the Buffalo and Cazenovia creeks.

Ice jams remain in place on area creeks and rivers this morning,
with at least one on Buffalo Creek near West Seneca. Another
jam resides along Cazenovia Creek in West Seneca with
significant water into Cazenovia Park Bowl, but no private
property is being impacted.

Flows are expected to remain steady through today as additional
runoff lessens due to the cooling temperatures.

A Flood Watch remains in effect for Niagara, Orleans, Erie,
Genesee, Wyoming, Chautauqua and Cattaraugus counties through
late Wednesday night. The risk for ice jams is non-zero for
areas outside the Watch area and will be closely monitored. At
this stage, it seems like ice jams that do occur outside the
Watch area will be more isolated.

Other susceptible areas to ice jams besides the Buffalo area
creeks, are Cattaraugus Creek, and the upper Allegany River,
although they can happen anywhere.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Users should be wary of unrepresentative gauge
readings with ice as hydro gauges are designed to measure for
ice free conditions. High levels seen on many of the Buffalo
Area Creek gauges are not representative of the true flow of
water. Ice buildup around the gauge can result in much higher
readings than are actually occuring on the river as a whole.
For these reasons, gauge readings due to ice jams are not
counted as records.

Outside of ice jams, the flood risk is minimal.
