.SYNOPSIS...
Calm before the storm with dry and quiet weather today. Tonight,
while mainly dry weather will continue southerly winds will pick up
across the area ahead of the deepening low pressure system.
Significant storm system continues to remain on track for Wednesday.
This system will bring widespread rain showers followed by a round
of potentially strong to damaging winds. In the wake of this system,
high pressure returns with cooler weather but dry weather expected
for the rest of the week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
A very weak surface low will track well to our north across Ontario
and Quebec Canada today while its associated frontal boundary sags
into and across the forecast area. While this system will not bring
much in the precipitation department, it will bring a modest
increase in moisture at the low levels(~ 1-3K feet). This will
likely bring an uptick in cloud cover mixed with sunshine across
Western NY. East of Lake Ontario, it's likely that this additional
low level moisture will likely bring about a fair amount of
cloudiness with mostly cloudy skies developing over the course
of the day. Otherwise, despite the increase in cloud coverage,
temperatures will average 5-10F above normal. Look for highs to
peak in the low to mid 50s for most locals. East of lake
Ontario, where more cloud cover will reside, it will be a bit
cooler with highs in the upper 40s near 50F.

Tonight, weak surface ridging will remain in place across the Lower
Lakes. Again, dry and mainly quiet weather will continue across our
forecast area for a significant portion of the night. However, the
dry and quiet weather won't last forever as a deepening surface low
tracks toward the Great Lakes region. Ahead of this system,
southerly flow will strengthen on the leading edge of a 50-60 knot
LLJ. At this point, it appears that a significant down sloping wind
event will not occur off the Chautauqua ridge. For one, wind flow
will not be well aligned for such an event to occur, meaning wind
flow will not be perpendicular to the ridge. Although, it will
become fairly breezy and it won't be out of the question to see wind
gusts of up to 30 mph. With winds picking up and warm advection
processes in play, temperatures will not follow a typical diurnal
trend. Temperatures, will in fact actually hold or rise overnight.
With that said, look for lows to occur early and bottom out in the
low 40s across Western NY. East of Lake Ontario, where winds will be
a bit lighter initially look for lows in the upper 30s.

.SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/...
...Strong to damaging winds late Wednesday and Wednesday evening...

Guidance remains in lock step with the upcoming wind event. A deep
'cutter' storm that will have emerged onto the plains twenty four
hours earlier will become vertically stacked on Wednesday as it will
lumber to the east across the Upper Great Lakes. The fully mature
cyclone will push its strong cold front across our forecast area
Wednesday afternoon and evening...and this will not only be the
focus for some moderately heavy showers...but will mark the start of
a period of strong to potentially damaging winds.

The operational GFS has been oscillating back and forth the past
several model runs in regards to a low level jet that has ranged
from 55 to 70 knots along the cold frontal boundary. The concern is
that a squall line will develop in the vcnty of the front and help
to convectively transport the strong winds aloft to the surface. Not
that a true squall line would be needed to mix the winds to the
surface...but that would be a worst case scenario. Possibly
mitigating the risk will be a dramatic (7-10mb / 6 hrs) weakening of
the occluded sfc low as the front plows across the region. Its not
out of the question that we get some thunder with the frontal
passage...especially if a true squall line can develop. While
elevated instability looks meager at this point...the strong
dynamics of the system and some confidence added by SPC outlining a
general area will prompt us to add at least the slight chc for
thunder.

That being said though...strong low level convergence in the
presence of a 60kt low level jet should encourage some moderately
heavy showers. Before getting back to the main concern (winds)...its
worth pointing out that the trend of slowing the onset of showers
has continued. While most of the showers will come in conjunction
with the low level forcing from the cold front during the midday and
afternoon... a coupled H25 jet and 150-200m hgt falls will be more
than enough to support showers at just about any point during the
day. The moderately heavy showers in the afternoon could be a little
problematic for those traveling for the Thanksgiving holiday...but
at least it will not be snow. Just plan for unsettled weather and
give yourself some extra time because of the strong winds and rain.

The synoptically driven winds will gradually increase during the
first half of Wednesday...then the concern is that convective winds
of 40-50 kts will accompany the frontal passage. This may be the
time that will be most prone for damage. The timing of this fropa
also remains consistent from run to run and model to model...with
the passage forecast to occur between 1 and 4 PM over the western
counties and between 4 and 7 PM for sites east of Lake Ontario. The
strongest LLJ will be just to the south of the eastward forecast
track though...so that would target areas south of Lake Ontario...
and in particular the far western counties.

In the wake of the cold front...a 50-60kt LLJ will be found in the
deepening cold air during the remainder of the afternoon into
Wednesday evening. This environment would more likely support high
advisory type sfc winds...but could not rule out a gust to 60 mph or
localized damage from already damaged trees or those in poor health.
The west to east storm track will also minimize the added affects of
isallobaric pressure rises...as increases of just 4-5mb in the
initial six hours is expected behind the front. From this vantage
point...guidance is suggesting the potential for damaging wind gusts
with the frontal passage with high end advisory winds thereafter. As
mentioned in previous discussions...this could be covered with a
wind advisory and short fused severe thunderstorm warnings (thunder/
lightning not needed). For now...will maintain the high wind watch
for the far western counties that will run from 12z Wednesday to 03z
Wednesday evening.

Temperatures across the western counties on Wednesday will shoot
through the 50s ahead of the approaching cold front...with many
areas likely reaching into the lower 60s. A strengthening low level
jet should be able to mechanically mix at least a portion of the 8 to
10c H85 to the sfc...so the midday hours (ahead of the rain) could
get quite 'balmy'. Will once again aim several degrees above the
warmest guidance package. Meanwhile the Eastern lake Ontario region
will be cooler as they will be closer to the track of the sfc low.

The strongest SYNOPTIC winds may actually come Wednesday night...
particularly early. A 50-55 kt LLJ within the cold advection will at
least partially mix to the surface. The winds will be further
enhanced by a significant isallobaric component and a suggestion of
a trop fold that will extend as low as 700mb. This will be the most
significant portion of the stratospheric intrusion of this
relatively long wind event. While winds should SLOWLY drop off
through the night...it will remain windy with evening gusts still
expected to reach 40 to 50 mph in some areas.

Cold air will gradually deepen in the wake of the cold front
Wednesday night...but it will take SEVERAL hours for temperatures at
cloud level to chill to the point of supporting a change over to wet
snow showers. It will also likely remain too 'warm' aloft to allow
for a true lake response...so lift needed for the mixed pcpn will
come from subtle shortwaves in the cyclonic flow and from local
orographic processes.

As the strong synoptic storm system exits across the Canadian
maritimes on Thursday...a deep cyclonic flow of chilly air will be
left across our forecast area. This in part will aid in keeping some
gusty winds around...but its interesting that much of the driving
force behind gusts to 35 mph or better will be supported by
isallobaric pressure rises of 5-7 mb/3 hr...which were largely
absent on Wednesday. In other words...these will be largely gradient
winds. This will make this particular wind event a rather prolonged
one...although not necessarily a memorable one. Otherwise...H85
temps of -10c will encourage some lake induced rain and wet snow
showers to fall over the region...mainly for sites southeast of the
lakes. Temperatures on Thursday will be some 20 degrees lower than
those from Wednesday.

High pressure nosing south from James Bay and warm advection in the
mid levels will then quickly cut off the lake driven pcpn early
Thursday night. This will leave a problem free Thanksgiving night
across the region with mins generally in the 20s.

We can relax Friday and Friday night...as a large mid level ridge
centered over the Upper Great Lakes and Ohio Valley will support
strong high pressure that will nose southwards across our area from
James Bay. This will translate into fair dry weather across our
region...perfect for those concerned about holiday travel. It will
be on the chilly side of normal though as H925 temps averaging -7c
will keep afternoon temps from climbing out of the 30s. Parts of the
North Country may not even crack freezing.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
It will become unsettled across the region during this period...as a
broad progressive mid level ridge will give way to a large closed
low. The mature storm system will slog its way across the Lower
Great Lakes during the course of the weekend with the potential for
mixed pcpn increasing with time. While confidence has steadily
increased to the point of using Cat pops for Sunday...thermal
profiles remain inconsistent as to the p-type. From this vantage
point though...a large snowfall appears unlikely...however...there
will be the risk for freezing pcpn and or enough wet snow to cause
some travel issues.

By Monday...there is general consensus that the storm system will be
moving away to our east. This will allow cold air to deepen across
our region and change the mixed pcpn to snow showers.

.AVIATION /12Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Observations show VFR flight conditions across area terminals early
this morning. Otherwise, weak area of low pressure will pass by to
the north through Ontario and Quebec Canada today. As the low passes
by to our north, it will drag its weakening frontal boundary across
the lower lakes which will bring in some low level moisture(~2K to
4K feet)to the region. This may result in lower CIGS and some MVFR
conditions at some terminals, especially east of Lake Ontario.

Tuesday night, VFR expected the majority of the night ahead of a
deepening low pressure system which will track towards the
region.

Outlook...
Wednesday...Widespread MVFR in rain showers developing along with a
risk of LLWS...followed by potentially strong surface winds
Wednesday afternoon into evening.

Thursday...Mainly VFR...with areas of MVFR in lake effect
clouds and scattered snow showers possible southeast of the
lakes.

Friday...VFR.

Saturday...Restrictions developing in mixed precipitation.

.MARINE...
South to southwesterly winds will pick up a bit on the lakes but
remain below Small Craft Advisory levels today. The higher wave
action will be found mainly out over the open waters of both lakes.

Tonight, deepening low pressure over Kansas will track towards the
Great Lakes region. Strengthening winds ahead of this system have
prompted Gale Warnings to be issued on Lake Erie starting Wednesday
and continuing through Wednesday night. Off lake Ontario, a Gale
Watch has been issued for all of the open waters for Wednesday night
into early Thursday. Small Craft Advisories have also been issued
starting late Tuesday night and run through Thursday.

Thursday night, Canadian source high pressure begins to build into
the Lower Lakes. Behind this latest system cold front, northwest
winds will gradually subside Friday day as the pressure gradient
relaxes across the Lower Lakes.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
A lakeshore flood event remains possible Wednesday into early
Wednesday night for Lake Erie and for the Lake Ontario
shorelines of Jefferson and Oswego counties late Wednesday
night through Thursday morning.

A strong storm system will pass by to the north of the Lower
Great Lakes during this period, and this will result in several
hours of very strong west to southwest winds.

For Lake Erie, southerly winds will increase to 15 to 25 knots
Wednesday morning, then after the passage of a strong cold
front during the midday hours, winds will increase to 35 knot
gales while becoming west to southwest into the evening hours.
During periods of normal lake levels these winds would probably
not be strong enough to produce a warning criteria seiche on
the lake, however all of the Great lakes are at abnormally high
levels so the higher starting point could allow the lake to
reach warning criteria late Wednesday afternoon.

For Lake Ontario, the strongest westerly winds will occur
Wednesday night, then gradually diminish as they turn northwest
Thursday. The combination of high lake levels, strong onshore
winds, and high wave action may result in lakeshore flooding and
shoreline erosion on the east end of the lake late Wednesday
night into Thursday morning.
