.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure will exit southeast off the Carolina coast making way
for the next cold front to cross the area late tonight and Thursday
while generating some showers. High pressure will then build into
the region with dry and warmer weather Friday, followed by a rainy
start to the weekend as a weak frontal system brings another round
of showers Saturday. A bubble of high pressure will bring dry
weather to close out the weekend, before a warm front brings a few
showers early next week, but also summer-like temperatures.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Dry conditions will persist through this evening with just mid and
upper level clouds increasing from west to east ahead of a cold
front set to track across western and north central NY later tonight
and Thursday morning. One exception may be across southwestern NYS
later this evening where a few scattered light showers may be
possible, however regional radar is not that impressive at this time
along the front with a line of weak, broken showers moving east
across western Lake Erie and southern Ontario. That said, will keep
the forecast dry for now as this light activity may dissipate before
reaching our area. Parent low will become occluded over Hudson Bay
tonight, so while the front continues to move eastward, the best
forcing will be well to the north of the region. The cold front will
be accompanied by a ribbon of moisture as it moves into the region
tonight. Scattered showers will move into western NY late this
evening. A secondary shortwave trough will approach the region late
tonight and showers will become more widespread east of Lake Ontario
into Thursday. Cold air advection and subsidence will move into
western NY Thursday morning and showers will come to an end from
west to east. Rainfall will linger east of Lake Ontario through the
afternoon as the mid-level shortwave trough tracks nearby. Rainfall
amounts will range from less than a tenth of an inch across western
NY to a quarter inch east of Lake Ontario. Cooler temperatures
expected Thursday with highs in the mid to upper 60's across the
higher terrain and east of Lake Ontario to the low 70's along the
Lake Plains.

Breezy conditions will occur behind the cold front Thursday, as west-
southwest winds with gusts of 20-25 mph are expected and gusts up to
35 mph northeast of Lakes Erie and Ontario.

.SHORT TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
Surface ridging drifting across the region Thursday night will yield
seasonable low temperatures in the mid 40s to lower 50s. This will
also promote clearing skies, although areas southeast of Lake
Ontario could see a few lake effect clouds as 850 mb temperatures
drop to near +4C. Some river valley fog is also possible.

Emerging return flow expected Friday as the surface high slides off
the Mid Atlantic coast. The effective increase in warm air advection
will support high temperatures in the mid 70s in most areas, with
upper 60s to lower 70s east of Lake Ontario.

An organized area of precipitation is expected to develop at the
apex of a 50 kt low level jet over the southern Great Lakes and
into southern Ontario Friday evening. The degree of downstream
propagation of this moisture into western and north central New
York Friday night will be governed by orientation of the low
level inflow, which will be mainly parallel to incoming cold
frontal boundary.

Greater precipitation potential, which perhaps will include
some thunderstorms, may hold off until Saturday, as increasing
upper jet support and frontal forcing taps into the deeper
moisture plume folding across the region during this time. High
temperatures Saturday should reach the mid to upper 70s in most
areas, assuming there are a few breaks in the showers.

The showers will taper off from northwest to southeast Saturday
night as the cold front presses south of the area, with high
pressure and a much drier airmass pushing south into the region.
Dewpoints will quickly drop off after a somewhat muggy Saturday,
with partial clearing from north to south overnight. Lows will drop
into the low to mid 50s in most locations, with mid 40s for the
North Country.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Sunday still looks to be a really nice early fall day as large
Canadian high pressure slides eastward across southern Ontario and
Quebec...and in the process suppresses Saturday's frontal boundary
well to our southwest. This will result in dry weather along with
a good deal of sunshine...along with pleasant high temperatures
mainly between 65 and 70.

Sunday night and Monday the core of the surface ridge will settle
southeastward and off the New England coastline...while the next
wave of low pressure quickly pushes from the northern Plains states
to the Upper Great Lakes. The ensuing southwesterly return flow in
between these two systems will help to push the frontal boundary
back northward across most of our area as a warm front...with the
attendant increase in moisture and warm air advection possibly
supporting some scattered showers. Meanwhile the burgeoning warm air
advection regime will force temperatures back up to above normal
levels...with Monday's highs ranging from the lower 70s across the
North Country to the mid and upper 70s across the remainder of the
area.

Monday night and Tuesday the main frontal zone should stall out over
Ontario and Quebec Provinces...before starting to slowly slip back
southward as a cold front as the initial surface low ejects
northeastward across Quebec Province...and upper level ridging
across the eastern CONUS begins to flatten a little. This stated...
the boundary will still likely remain largely to our north through
the end of the day Tuesday. In turn...this should translate into a
mainly dry day south of Lake Ontario...while the North Country and
Saint Lawrence Valley will lie a little closer to the returning
boundary and therefore more subject to the possibility of some
showers. The much bigger story though will be the warm temperatures...
which could easily rise to levels more typical of August than the
first day of October. Should current model projections of 850 mb
temps in the mid to upper teens Celsius verify...the lower elevations
south of Lake Ontario could well see highs reach into the lower 80s...
with mid to upper 70s the rule elsewhere.

Tuesday night and Wednesday the frontal zone looks to slowly sag
back southward across our region...as upper level troughing over the
Northern Rockies begins to eject eastward across the Northern Plains
states...while further helping to flatten and knock back the eastern
CONUS upper level ridge. In tandem with the approach of yet another
surface wave that will be riding eastward along the boundary...this
will result in better chances for showers across our region...along
with temperatures retreating back closer to (but still remaining above)
early October normals.

Looking out just past the end of this period...the medium range
guidance remains in reasonable agreement that the aforementioned
upper level trough will continue to dig southeastward across the
Great Lakes and New England late next week. This would eventually
pave the way for drier and notably cooler air to advect into our
region from central Canada...possibly bringing this fall's first
real taste of true autumnal temperatures. Stay tuned...

.AVIATION /22Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
High pressure will move off the Carolina coast tonight making way
for a cold front set to track across the region tonight with
scattered showers expected across western NY. Better synoptic
forcing is expected east of Lake Ontario Thursday morning and
showers will become likely at KART. West-southwest winds increase
behind the front Thursday with wind gusts 25-30kts and the highest
gusts at KIAG and KBUF.

Sub-VFR conditions possible across the higher terrain late tonight
into Thursday morning. MVFR CIGS likely at KJHW during this time.
CIGS will drop to 045 east of Lake Ontario when showers become
likely. VFR conditions expected behind the cold front Thursday.

Friday...VFR.
Saturday...Mainly VFR with a chance of showers.
Sunday and Monday...VFR.

Moderate to occasionally fresh southwesterlies are expected tonight,
as a cold front will slowly cross the region late tonight and early
Thursday. This will keep marginal small craft advisory conditions in
place, especially on Lake Erie.

As the flow becomes more westerly in the wake of the cold front on
Thursday, moderate to fresh winds will push higher waves into the
New York nearshore waters. This will likely support widespread small
craft advisories from around midday Thursday through Thursday night.
