.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure passing over the Saint Lawrence Valley will provide us
with fair dry weather today with most areas warming by some 5 to 10
degrees from yesterday. A cold front will cross the region tonight and
Saturday morning while producing some showers and thunderstorms along
with a gusty wind. Fair dry weather will return for the second half of
the weekend with above normal temperatures anticipated through much of
next week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
It will be a nice day for most of the region as high pressure drifts
southeast from Quebec, but there will be a chance for showers toward
the end of the day over far WNY as a weak warm front moves across
the region. Cirrus from the steadily rising plume of moisture along
a synoptic warm conveyor belt stretching from the TX/OK Panhandles
NE to the Great Lakes region will occasionally spread over the
region.  Meanwhile in the lower levels, the onset of warm advection
will result in at least partly sunny skies and allow temperatures to
rebound into the 70s. Given the strengthening southeasterly flow,
the warmest weather should target the Niagara Frontier, but this may
be short-lived with increasing clouds and the even the chance for a
brief shower toward the end of the day along with the warm air
advection.

Speaking of winds...a strengthening low level jet this afternoon should
largely mix to the surface with gusts in the vcnty of 30 mph found
across the higher terrain of the Southern Tier and Finger Lakes. Some
of these winds could sneak into the downslope areas of the IAG
Frontier.

It will then become downright windy across the majority of the forecast
area tonight...as a 40 to 50 knot low level jet will be found ahead of
an approaching cold front. While an inversion based arnd 2k ft will
largely prevent the core of this wind from effectively mixing to the
surface...most areas can still anticipate gusts of at least 30 mph.
There will be two areas of concern though where a downslope component
could allow winds to gust as high as 50 mph. The first of these areas
will be along and immediately northwest of the Chautauqua ridge. While
winds at the inversion level will be more southerly than what is
typical for a true downslope wind event...gusts of 40 to 50 mph
should still be common along the New York State Thruway from Ripley
and Dunkirk up as far as Hamburg. The strongest winds in these areas
will focus on the first half of tonight. The second area will be on
the north and northeast facing slopes of the Tug Hill over Jefferson
county where similar winds can be expected overnight. In both
cases...a wind advisory has been issued. Problems from this event
could be exacerbated by trees that are still fully foliated...so if
more favorable downslope conditions become apparent...the advisory
could be upgraded. Stay tuned.

The other issue tonight will be the fairly widespread showers
associated with the approaching cold front. The slow moving front will
cross southern Ontario during the first half of tonight...then will
make its way to the far western counties by daybreak Saturday. Strong
frontogenetic forcing and low level convergence will combine with upper
level lift from the tail of a 90kt H25 jet over Quebec to generate
fairly widespread showers along and ahead of the front. While minimal
surface based instability will be capped for much of the night by the
aforementioned inversion (from strong warm advection just off the
deck)...there should be enough elevated CAPE (100-200 j/kg) to allow
for some embedded thunderstorm activity as well. Given the relatively
strong wind field aloft...it is not out of the question that any storm
could include localized damaging wind gusts. Will maintain high likely
to cat pops regionwide.

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
On Saturday mid level troughing and associated low pressure over
James Bay will push eastward across northern Quebec...while easing
its trailing cold front across our area. The 00z/13 guidance suite
has continued the trend of slowing the eastward progress of the front
down even more...which makes sense considering that the boundary will
become increasingly removed from its mid and upper level support over
time. Latest model consensus now suggests a frontal passage during the
morning across far western New York...and during the afternoon further
east.

Following the frontal passage...fairly numerous to widespread showers
and some isolated embedded thunder out ahead of the boundary will taper
off rather sharply from west to east and give way to increasing amounts
of sunshine as subsidence and strong drying overspreads our region in
association with high pressure ridging northeast from the Ohio Valley.
The increase in sunshine and mixing should help to offset weak cold air
advection such that afternoon highs should range in the lower to mid
70s in many areas...though some of the higher terrain may not make it
out of the upper 60s...particularly across the North Country where the
clouds and showers will be slowest to depart.

Saturday night the aforementioned surface ridge will crest across our
region...yielding a dry and quiet night. With light winds and mainly
clear to partly cloudy skies in place conditions will be good for
radiational cooling...allowing overnight lows to range from the lower
50s across interior portions of the Southern Tier/North Country to
the upper 50s along the lakeshores.

Sunday through Monday flat subtropical ridging over the southern half
of the nation will begin to amplify northward across the Plains states
and Upper Great Lakes...in response to digging upper level troughing
along the Pacific coastline. Downstream of this building ridge...a
modestly cyclonic upper level flow will be in place from the Central
Great Lakes into New England...with a couple of shortwave disturbances
sliding southeastward through the larger-scale flow and passing near
or a little to the north of our region. While the best shots of DCVA
and corresponding areas of favorable jet dynamics will thus remain
mainly to our north over Ontario Province...there may still be enough
of an associated uptick in moisture and forcing to generate a few
isolated to widely scattered showers across our region...particularly
during Sunday night and Monday when a very weak attendant surface
trough may cross our region. Have therefore indicated a mix of slight
chance to very low-end chance PoPs for this 36-hour period...though
much of the time will likely remain dry. Otherwise temps will average
out near to above normal...with highs ranging through the 70s both days
(warmest across far western New York)...and lows Sunday night ranging
from the mid 50s east of Lake Ontario to the lower 60s across the lake
plains of far western New York.

Following the passage of these weak features...sprawling surface-based
ridging will build across the region Monday night. This will ensure
a return to fair dry weather to close out this period...with the
combination of weak cool air advection and good radiational cooling
allowing for lows to settle back into the upper 40s across the North
Country...and into the lower to mid 50s elsewhere.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
During the middle of next week the medium range guidance remains in
good agreement that the amplifying upper level ridging over the
central portion of the nation in the two days preceding this period
will continue to strengthen into a large and strong (588 dm) upper
ridge over the central and eastern CONUS...while an upstream upper
level trough digs across the western third to half of the nation.
This will result in temperatures during this period averaging above
normal...and likely decidedly so by Wednesday and Thursday as the
axis of the upper level ridge approaches our area. At the same time...
sprawling surface-based ridging draped across our region should
lead to a prolonged stretch of fair dry conditions...thereby making
for a delightful run of late summer weather across our region.

.AVIATION /14Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
High pressure extending south from Quebec will provide the vast
majority of our region with fair VFR weather today...although
morning through midday stratus and valley fog will shroud parts of
the Southern Tier and Finger Lakes region with IFR conditions.

A cold front will then taker aim on the region tonight. A 50kt low
level jet ahead of this feature will partially mix to the surface...so
many areas can anticipate relatively strong sfc winds averaging 20 to
30 knots. South to southeast winds may gust over 40 knots near Lake
Erie and also near KART. Otherwise...VFR cigs will gradually lower to
MVFR levels in some areas as showers will become common with the
frontal passage. There will also be the potential for thunderstorms.

Outlook...

Saturday...Any showers ending from west to east, returning to VFR.
Saturday night through Tuesday...Mainly VFR.

.MARINE...
High pressure centered over Quebec will gradually drift across the
St Lawrence Valley and New England as we progress through the day.
This will promote veering winds across the Lower Great Lakes with a
predominantly easterly flow becoming southerly by this evening.

Moderately strong southerlies tonight warrant small craft advisories
over the end of both Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, although there will
be a little bit of an offshore component of the winds through part
of the evening. This winds will continue to veer as a cold front
slowly crosses the region with widespread showers and possible
thunderstorms.

In the wake of the cold front on Saturday...moderate to occasionally
fresh southwesterlies will be found throughout the Lower Great Lakes.
This will produce choppy conditions on much of Lake Erie as well as for
Lake Ontario north of Oswego.

A weaker surface pressure Saturday night and Sunday will promote
weaker winds and negligible waves.
