.SYNOPSIS...
A slow moving cold front will move cross Western and Central
New York late tonight through early Wednesday afternoon. This
will bring a few rounds of showers, some locally heavy, along
with a chance of thunderstorms. After the front moves east,
aside from a few lake enhanced showers downwind of the lakes
Wednesday night into Thursday morning, expect mainly dry and
cooler weather through Thursday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
A slow moving pattern continues over the eastern US, courtesy of a
closed upper level low over northern Ontario, an older one further
to the east/downstream near the Canadian Maritimes, and the ridge
that gave us several days of tranquil weather sandwiched in between.
On leading edge of upstream closed upper low is strong upper jet
over 110 kts that crosses central Great Lakes overnight and reaches
lower Great Lakes on Wednesday morning. Despite the cold front at
the sfc becoming parallel to mid to upper flow, it is moving
steadily to the east, albeit slowly, now over central Lake Erie.

Initial weak lift from mainly advection of deeper moisture, pwats up
to 1.80 inches, has supported lighter showers over western NY since
early this afternoon. A slightly more organized area of convection,
but still lacking much lightning, is lifting across eastern Ohio
this evening. Stronger low-level moisture flux convergence is
supporting these showers and am still expecting the showers to
increase in coverage as they lift into western NY toward midnight
and more so after midnight as the stronger jet energy arrives
as pwat max and low-level convergence phase up. Though elevated
instability overnight is around 200-400j/kg which is not that
impressive, any instability with the increased forcing will
result in the potential for heavy downpours in any convection.

Primary time for showers and a chance of thunder occurs from
midnight through 4 AM over far western NY, including Buffalo and
Jamestown, then shifts to Rochester and Wellsville between 2 AM
and 7 AM, and will be from the Finger Lakes to the eastern Lake
Ontario region from 5 AM to as late as 11 AM or noon on
Wednesday. In terms of total rainfall, expect basin averages
under 0.5 inch over western NY to 0.5 to 0.75 inch along and
east of the Genesee valley toward the Finger Lakes and to east
of Lake Ontario. Longer duration of larger scale forcing from
the strong upper jet and axis of highest pwats signal that
locations east of Lake Ontario could see over 1 inch of rain by
midday Wednesday.

For the rest of Wednesday, while far WNY dries out and becomes
breezy with stronger flow off Lake Erie, approaching shortwave
on leading edge of primary upper trough may kick of isold to
scattered convection as it did upstream this afternoon over WI.
Models continue to indicate a thin line of shallow convection
that forms on a Lake Erie breeze later in the day as this
shortwave arrives. Lack of deep moisture and instability will be
negatives for a lot of showers and thunderstorms though. There
could also be another thin line of showers along the Southern
Lake Ontario lake breeze boundary. These trailing lines, if they
develop, should not last long as they move E/SE late in the
afternoon.

.SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/...
A weak secondary cold front and the mid level trough axis will cross
the eastern Great Lakes Wednesday night and early Thursday. This
will bring an increase in cloud cover again. A lack of deep moisture
and weak forcing will keep the front dry from a synoptic standpoint,
but the juxtaposition of frontal convergence over an increasingly
unstable airmass over the lakes may support a few scattered lake
effect showers east of Lakes Erie and Ontario. If these do
materialize they will be light and scattered in nature given the
lack of better moisture.

The mid level trough and secondary cold front will move east of the
area later Thursday. Any lake effect showers will end early east of
Lake Erie, but may linger into the afternoon hours east of Lake
Ontario. Even though the showers may end, cloud cover will linger
well into the day with forecast thermal profiles showing lake
moisture getting trapped underneath an inversion. This should keep
high temperatures on the cool side of guidance, averaging in the
upper 60s to lower 70s.

High pressure will briefly ridge northward from the Appalachian
mountains into eastern New York Thursday evening and this will
provide dry weather for at least the first half of the night.
However another trough and cold front will cross the eastern Great
Lakes late Thursday night and Friday. A few showers may develop
later Thursday night, with a relative higher chance east and
northeast of the lakes as a renewed period of stronger lake
instability develops. The chance of showers will last through Friday
morning before tapering off from northwest to southeast Friday
afternoon. The brief period of favorable lake instability and
steadily veering boundary layer flow will keep any lake enhanced
showers on the move, with rainfall amounts expected to remain light.

High pressure will build into the Great Lakes Friday night in the
wake of the Friday cold front. The airmass is quite dry, so despite
relatively large lake to 850mb delta T's, lake effect showers are
not expected and lake effect clouds will be limited. As long as
skies are able to clear out, there should be good radiational
cooling conditions away from the lakes with low temperatures in the
40s.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
It will be a crisp start to Saturday with surface high pressure over
the region. This feature will bring sunny skies, and once we are on
the back side of the high...afternoon temperatures will warm
pleasantly into the lower 70s.

A weak frontal boundary will push towards our region from the Ohio
Valley Saturday night. At first clouds will increase Saturday night,
with a few showers possible both Sunday and Monday as the frontal
boundary lingers just to our south. An inverted trough will push
these showers towards Lake Ontario...with areas east of Lake Ontario
possibly remaining dry both days.

Tuesday southerly winds will begin to increase ahead of an area of
low pressure and cold front. These southerly winds should bring 80
degree temperatures to the lake plain. Showers with this front at
this time appear to hold off to after sunset Tuesday night.

.AVIATION /01Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
A cold front is slowly
approaching western NY. Isolated showers should become more
widespread overnight with solid MVFR and brief IFR conditions.
Showers will end toward daybreak in western NY at IAG, BUF and JHW,
but showers will not diminish until mid to late morning on Wednesday
farther east at ROC and ART. Low clouds will follow the front for a
few hours, then skies should scatter out by afternoon, lastly at
ART. A few more showers and even a possible thunderstorm may develop
mid to late afternoon on Wednesday mainly at ROC and ART as an upper
level disturbance approaches during peak heating of the day. If any
storms do form, they should move fairly quickly east.

Outlook...

Thursday...Mainly VFR, some brief MVFR with showers possible.
Friday...Mainly VFR, some brief MVFR with showers with a cold front.
Saturday...VFR with local morning valley fog.
Sunday...Mainly VFR, some MVFR with showers possible.

.MARINE...
Fairly strong cold front will move east of the area Wednesday.
Southwest winds will increase in the wake of this cold front as
cooler air aloft sweeps into the area. The stronger winds will be
found on Lake Erie, where another period of Small Craft Advisory
conditions appears likely Wednesday afternoon and evening. Southwest
winds may increase again to near Small Craft Advisory levels
Thursday afternoon through early Friday on Lake Erie. Winds will be
somewhat lower on Lake Ontario during this period, although there is
some chance of low end Small Craft Advisory conditions late Thursday
night through Friday evening.

A much cooler airmass will move into the eastern Great Lakes late
Wednesday through the end of the week. This will bring an elevated
risk of waterspouts to Lakes Erie and Ontario. At this time, the
best chance of waterspouts looks to be Wednesday night and early
Thursday, and again late Thursday night and Friday morning as a pair
of cold fronts cross the eastern Great Lakes. Enhanced convergence
and near surface vorticity along these frontal boundaries may
support greater waterspout potential.
