.SYNOPSIS...
Showers and possible thunderstorms associated with a slow moving
cold front will move across our forecast area through the first half
of today. Very cool air will then overspread our region in the wake
of the front tonight and Monday...as the mercury will tumble to some
15 degrees below normal early June values. The good news is that
temperatures will recover to ABOVE normal levels for the second
half of the week.
&&
.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
It will be wet and unsettled this morning...as a slow moving frontal
boundary will move across our region. A lobe of low pressure...in
the vcnty of northwest Pennsylvania at 07z...will move northeast
along the boundary in the process. This subtle feature was helping
to enhance the rainfall to our southwest...including some strong to
severe thunderstorm activity over central and southern Ohio. While
there may be a thunderstorm or two over our region as the wavy front
moves through...the strongest convection will stay to our south
within a notably more unstable airmass.
As the front moves east across New England during the afternoon...
drier and much cooler air will overspread our region. This will
promote at least partial clearing with sunshine returning to end the
day. Temperatures across the vast majority of the region will not
exceed the mid to upper 60s.
While a cyclonic flow in the mid and upper levels will be in place
tonight...a brief period of surface based ridging will accompany a
relatively dry airmass. This will insure fair dry weather for the
vast majority of our forecast area...although a shower cannot be
ruled out for sites north of the Tug Hill by daybreak. Otherwise...
it will be chilly night with the mercury tumbling into the lower 40s
away from the lakes. There may even be some upper 30s found in the
chillier Southern Tier valleys.

.SHORT TERM /MONDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/...
On Monday surface low pressure will slowly drift northward across
Quebec Province...while the axis of its anomalously deep parent
upper level trough pivots across our area during the morning...
before sliding eastward across eastern New York and into New England
during the afternoon. Increasing wraparound moisture/cyclonic flow
on the backside of the surface low and lift attendant to the passage
of the upper trough axis will help to generate a period of scattered
to numerous showers southeast and east of Lake Ontario...with this
getting an added boost from Lake Ontario moisture and upsloping.
The shower coverage should peak between the late morning and midday
hours...before gradually fading from west to east Monday afternoon
and evening as the core of the upper trough slides out across the
Canadian Maritimes...and as high pressure and drier air builds
eastward from the Ohio Valley and central Great Lakes.
All the above said...the big story for Monday and Monday night will
be the well-advertised period of notably below normal temperatures.
The deep cool pool attendant to the upper level trough will result
in 850 mb temps of only -1C to -3C through early Monday afternoon...
with only modest recovery of these then subsequently taking place
through the rest of Monday and Monday night. This will translate into
high temperatures struggling to get out of the 50s on Monday...with
the rather cool readings further exacerbated by a brisk westerly wind.
The coldest overall temperatures of the period will then come Monday
night...when the axis of the surface ridge will slide across our
region and corresponding radiational cooling of our still rather cool
airmass will result in overnight lows ranging from the upper 30s across
interior portions of the Southern Tier and North Country to the lower
to mid 40s elsewhere. Compared to early June normals...such readings
will average 15 to 20 degrees below average during the day Monday...
and 5 to 10 degrees below normal Monday night.
Tuesday and Tuesday night the axis of the surface ridge will drift
eastward and eventually out to sea. At the same time low pressure will
steadily make its way eastward across Ontario Province...with an
attendant warm frontal zone extending southeastward into our region
during Tuesday...before pushing north and east of our region Tuesday
night. Over the past 24 hours the model guidance has continued to
trend much more aggressive with the southeastward extension of the
front and its associated moisture...as well as stronger with both its
attending swath of isentropic ascent...and convergence-driven lift
associated with a westerly low level jet impinging upon the frontal
surface.
All of this should add up to a steady west-to-east increase in cloud
cover across our region through the first half of Tuesday...followed by
a period of scattered to numerous showers along and northeast of the
advancing front Tuesday afternoon and night...with the bulk of this
activity focused from Lake Ontario and the Finger Lakes northeastward
across the North Country. Further west showers will be much more widely
scattered and shorter-lived across far western New York as this region
should break into the warm sector more quickly...with portions of the
Southern Tier likely to be far enough removed from the boundary to remain
totally dry. Temperature-wise...the advancing warm front will lead to a
marked east-west dichotomy in high temperatures during Tuesday...with
readings mostly confined to the 50s out ahead of the boundary...while
far western New York should see highs climb into the mid to upper 60s
with the arrival of the warm sector. Lows Tuesday night will then mainly
range through the 50s...with the warmest readings again found across far
western New York.
Moving on into the last 24 hours of this period...Wednesday and Wednesday
evening the surface low will make its way eastward across Quebec Province...
and while doing so will swing a prefrontal trough and its trailing cold
front across our region from west to east. Coupled with developing lake
breeze boundaries and diurnally-driven destabilization of the warm sector...
this should result in the development or fairly numerous afternoon
showers and scattered thunderstorms away from those areas shadowed by
the colder lake waters...with this activity then waning Wednesday night
with the passage of the cold front and diminishing instability. As for
temps...readings during this time frame will be much more typical of
June than those of the preceding two days...with highs Wednesday ranging
through the 70s...and lows Wednesday night in the mid to upper 50s.

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
The longer term portion of the forecast still appears to feature much
more typical temperatures for early June...as the persistent troughing
that has plagued eastern North America for much of this spring looks to
at least temporarily recede further northeastward...while allowing broad/
flat ridging to build eastward across the eastern two-thirds of the nation.
This should translate into daily highs in the 70s and nightly lows in
the 50s...with some potential for warmer readings than these on Friday
if you believe some of the warmer guidance.
In terms of precipitation chances...this period also looks to be mainly
dry...with just some low-end chances for showers found south of Lake
Ontario owing to the presence of a lingering frontal boundary over the
Ohio Valley and mid-Atlantic states...and one or more waves of low
pressure rippling eastward along this feature.

.AVIATION /08Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Conditions will deteriorate during the remaining pre dawn hours...as
cigs will drop to IFR to MVFR levels within an expanding area of
light moderate rain. KART and KBUF will likely be the first sites to
drop to IFR levels.
During the initial daylight hours...IFR cigs will be found across
the bulk of the region. These low cigs will rise to MVFR levels by
mid morning...then VFR conditions will return by 18z as stronger
winds below H925 will help to mix notably drier air to the surface.
For tonight...VFR conditons are expected.

Monday...MVFR with scattered to numerous showers.

A slow moving cold front will cross the Lower Great Lakes this
morning. While a weak surface pressure gradient associated with the
front will keep relatively light winds and minimal waves in place
through the midday hours...winds will become westerly and freshen in
the wake of the front this afternoon and evening. This will create
choppy conditions for the Lake Ontario nearshore waters late this
afternoon and evening...with waves expected to build to small craft
advisory levels later tonight.
On Monday...a deep storm system over northern Quebec and high
pressure centered over the Upper Great Lakes and Ohio Valley will
keep a relatively tight surface pressure gradient in place over the
Lower Great Lakes. This will especially be the case on Lake Ontario
where moderate to fresh winds will persist into Monday night. The
newly issued SCA from IAG to Mexico Bay will run through this
period.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
A cold front will cross Lake Ontario this morning with west to
northwesterly winds increasing to 15 to 30 mph in its wake.
Coupled with cold air advection...this will produce an increase
in wave action from late today and tonight through Monday...
before high pressure builds into the region and brings gradually
diminishing winds and waves Monday night and early Tuesday.
The combination of the increased wave action and rather high
lake levels will lead to the likelihood of flooding along the
south shore of Lake Ontario from tonight through early Tuesday.
