.SYNOPSIS...
Quiet conditions will prevail today as our region remains squeezed
between a storm system along the east coast and a surface trough
lingering back across the Central Great Lakes. Clouds will increase
today and tonight, and a stray shower of rain or snow is possible
near the Saint Lawrence Valley Wednesday morning. It will become
breezy tomorrow behind the surface trough, though surface
temperatures will be similar to today, with highs around 50F.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
This morning conditions remain quiet across the region, with
high pressure just off the New England coastline extending
westward over Western New York. An area of low pressure is
forming off the Georgia coastline, while a frontal boundary is
draped across the Upper Great Lakes.

For today, the surface high will continue to advance eastward
across the Atlantic, and allow for the coastal low to deepen as
is slides northward up the coastline. The surface trough to our
west will slowly edge eastward through the day...and together
with the coastal low, these features will increase mid and high
level clouds today. Per the 12z BUF sounding, very dry air
exists near the surface. Once daytime heating and mixing commences
this afternoon, dewpoints will drop to the teens to low 20's
across interior NYS. Min RH values will fall to 25-30 this
afternoon while southerly winds average 10-15 mph with gusts up
to 25 mph. Recent rainfall of 0.1-0.25 and marginal winds will
allow interior NYS to fall below fire weather criteria today.

While clouds increase today and tonight, the only chances for
precipitation will come late tonight and towards the Saint Lawrence
Valley where the nearing upstream trough and its associated moisture
may produce a light shower of snow or rain. Farther southward from
this region moisture is too thin to support precipitation, and the
surface trough will likely enter WNY dry.

Temperatures at 850 hPa will increase behind the surface high, with
readings around -2C this afternoon. This will bring temperature
readings to around 50F for much of the region. The exception will be
near the lakes, where temperatures will likely hold in the mid to
upper 40s. Tonight lows under a partly to mostly cloudy sky will be
near to several degrees above freezing.

.SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Upper trough pushing through southeast Canada will send a cold front
south through the area Wednesday. Narrowing ribbon of moisture looks
to be confined to northern New York during the first half of the day
Wednesday. This may bring just a few light showers to areas east of
Lake Ontario during the morning. Drier air will then move into the
region in wake of the front with a fair amount of sunshine expected.
Sunshine will help offset weak cold air advection allowing
temperatures to climb into the upper 40s to lower 50s, although
possibly remaining in the lower to mid 40s across higher
terrain. Winds are expected to increase as a broad 40-45 knot
low level jet develops and the mixed layer deepens. Most
momentum transfer profiles suggesting westerly gusts in the 35
to 45 mph range.

High pressure centered over the Upper Great Lakes Wednesday night
will drift across our area through Thursday. This will keep fair,
but cool weather in place with diminishing winds. High temperatures
Thursday likely only reaching the lower to mid 40s.

The forecast gets more active by Thursday evening as strong upper
level wave moves into the Mississippi Valley, tightening up the warm
front over the Ohio Valley. Active frontal zone placement remains in
question as the lead wing of moisture lifts into the northern Ohio
Valley. Both NAM/GFS solutions indicate wet bulb zero heights lower
sufficiently to support a period of light snow at precipitation
onset as the pronounced surface high slides to the northeast. Only
light snow accumulations on grassy surfaces are expected.

Precipitation should continue to expand across the area by Friday as
a northern stream wave moves into the Great Lakes and aids in
pulling the Ohio Valley surface wave northeastward. Profiles easily
warm sufficiently for all rain during the day Friday with high
temperatures approaching 50F for most areas.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY/...
Temperatures will average well above normal during this period...as
a broad...amplifying ridge will make its way across the Ohio Valley
and Lower Great Lakes. In fact...there is the chance that some areas
will climb to near 70 on Monday.

As we open this period Friday night...a complex open wave disturbance
will be exiting the Lower Great Lakes via New England. Showers will
end from west to east late Friday night and Saturday morning in the
process...with the chance for some wet snow showers to mix in across
the North Country.

High pressure will pass by to our north Saturday afternoon and
night...supporting fair dry weather with comfortable early Spring
temperatures. Warm advection on the backside of the surface high
will then pump temperatures into the 60s across the western counties
on Sunday while abundant sun will help to push the mercury well into
the 50s across the Eastern Lake Ontario region.

As an amplifying ridge passes over and east of our region Sunday
night and Monday...a strong southern stream storm system will cross
Missouri. This will set up a relatively strong southerly flow over
our region that will pump H85 temps to between 10 and 12c. Given the
gradient on Monday...a well mixed airmass should the easily support
max temperatures in the mid to upper 60s...with widespread 70s
possible across the Genesee Valley and Finger Lakes region. Stay
tuned.

.AVIATION /15Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
VFR flight conditions will prevail through the 12Z TAF cycle
with the region squeezed between two weather systems...an area
of low pressure advancing northward along the east coast and a
frontal boundary remaining across the Central Great Lakes. Mid
and high level clouds will increase through the period.

Tonight this frontal boundary will near the region and will begin to
lower cloud base heights...though likely remaining low end VFR or
greater.

Winds will remain light, with a general south to southwest flow
through the TAF cycle.

Outlook...

Wednesday...VFR.

Thursday...Mainly VFR but MVFR with scattered showers over the
Southern Tier. MVFR with scattered showers over WNY Thursday night.

Friday...MVFR to IFR in rain.

Saturday...VFR.

.MARINE...
A surface high pressure will settle farther out over the Atlantic
today, with a southerly flow continuing across the Eastern Great
Lakes. A surface trough will cross the region tomorrow morning, and
along and behind the trough southwesterly winds will increase, with
low end small craft advisory conditions possible. These conditions
would then persist through Wednesday night.

High pressure over the eastern Great Lakes will yield lighter winds
and lower wave heights Thursday and into early Friday. Another storm
system will pass just to the south of the eastern Great Lakes Friday
and the start of the weekend, though winds and waves will likely
remain below SCA thresholds.
