.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure tracking northeastward from the Mississippi Valley
will pull a stalled out frontal boundary over Pennsylvania back
northward across the area overnight and Saturday morning...then
will push its trailing cold front through our region later Saturday
and Saturday night. This system will produce occasional rain overnight
and Saturday...that will change over to snow and produce some minor
accumulations late Saturday night and Sunday before ending. High
pressure will then settle over the region Monday through Wednesday
bringing fair weather and a steady day-to-day warming trend.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
Through the rest of the night...a pair of shortwaves (one in
the southern stream and one in the northern stream) will
continue to dig southeastward and drive the development of a
large-scale trough over the eastern Plains states/Mississippi
Valley. On the eastern flank of this trough...increasing DCVA
will help to drive the development of an elongated wave of low
pressure across the Midwest and Ohio Valley...which in turn will
help to push the stalled-out frontal boundary over Pennsylvania
back into our region as a warm front... with this feature
reaching a Niagara Frontier-North Country axis by 12z Saturday.
Increasing warm advection/isentropic lift and convergence along
and to the north of this advancing frontal zone will first
result in cloud cover spreading back across the region from
south to north...followed by the arrival of some light precip a
few hours later. This will initially be fairly light before
increasing in coverage along and to the north of the boundary
later on in the night. At this point the bulk of any precip
potential now still looks to be delayed until after midnight
across the Niagara Frontier and Finger Lakes... and to after 3
am across the North Country. There also may be some patchy fog
across higher terrain with the warm front.

For areas south of Lake Ontario...low temperatures in the upper
30s to lower 40s and plenty of mild air aloft will help to ensure
that any precip that falls overnight will be in the form of just
plain rain. Further northeast across the North Country...the expected
stronger radiational cooling has allowed temperatures to dip into
the upper 20s to mid 30s...however these will give way to
rising readings overnight in response to the arrival of lower
cloud cover and the strengthening warm air advection pattern
across our region. Considering this expected trend and the
delayed arrival of any precip across the North Country until
much later on tonight...remain less than impressed with the
potential for mixed precip across this region. While there could
be a little sleet across far northern portions of Jefferson and
Lewis counties at the onset... feel that air and ground
temperatures (per area mesonet sites) should both be warm enough
to largely mitigate the potential for any freezing rain...which
should be very brief/localized and of little to no impact
should it occur. For this reason...have continued to hold off on
any Winter Weather Advisories in collaboration with surrounding
WFO's.

Low pressure will move along the stalled front near the Niagara
Frontier Saturday morning. This puts most of the forecast area in
the warm sector for most of the day with temperatures reaching the
low to mid 60's across interior portions of western and north-
central NY. Cooler temperatures expected closer to the Lakes.
Southwest winds will also increase in vicinity of the surface low
and gusts up to 35 mph are expected across the higher terrain by
afternoon. The mid-level trough will track eastward across the Great
Lakes Saturday and the front will begin to move eastward across
western NY through the afternoon. Strong mid-level convergence will
be located across Ontario Saturday morning and into Saturday
afternoon. PWATS of around 1.0 inches with is 2-3 SD above normal
will also move into the region Saturday. The combination of these
two ingredients will result in heavy rain just over the border
however will be in vicinity of the St. Lawrence River. Locations in
far northern Jefferson may be brushed by higher rainfall amounts.
The front will move eastward across western NY and into the North
Country Saturday afternoon. Steady rain will move from west to east
in vicinity of the front. Rainfall amounts of 0.5-0.75 are expected
across far western NY including the City of Buffalo and across
Jefferson county. As noted above amounts closer to an inch are
possible along the St. Lawrence River. Rainfall amounts of 0.1-0.25
inches expected across interior NY Saturday.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
One final wave looks to work along the front and finally kick it
through the area on Saturday night. This will allow for one last
burst of precipitation along it concurrent with atmospheric cooling
that will allow for a change from rain to snow for the entirety of
the area. Boundary layer temperatures will thus become critical as
to whether rain, rain/snow, or heavy snow will result for any
appreciable amount of time as the frontal wave crosses. At the
moment, it would seem all areas should experience a bit of each,
however the higher terrain (Southern Tier and Tug Hill) would seem
the most likely locations for anything more than an inch of snow
accumulation. This will be due to both the boundary layer
temperatures as well as the ground temperatures, not to mention
precipitation intensity at the time. As this occurs, river gages in
the Black River basin look set to jump fairly substantially and go
above action stage. However, current NERFC forecasts suggest a quick
peak and recession thereafter with no site hitting flood stage, so
the current hydro mention in the HWO seems appropriate.

With strong cold advection in control by Sunday, lake effect will
quickly become dominant as 850 mb temperatures drop toward -14C.
That said, the boundary layer is unlikely to remain below freezing
most places in the afternoon except the higher terrain, and given
the sun angle, additional daytime accumulations will be exceedingly
difficult. An additional mid level trough and associated area of
deeper moisture will cross the area Sunday night. This may allow
for a period of better lake response southeast of Lake Ontario, with
minor accumulations possible from the Genesee Valley eastward to
Oswego County and down into the Finger Lakes.

Lake effect gradually tapers off as the heart of the cold air off
the deck recedes back into Canada by Monday. This will segue into a
warming period toward midweek with temperatures back toward normal.

Tuesday and Tuesday night a weak mid level trough and washing out
frontal boundary will approach the eastern Great Lakes. The GFS
remains more aggressive with the strength and southeastern extent of
this system, while the ECMWF and GEM keep the majority of any
precipitation chances on the Canadian side of the border. Given the
strength of the building east coast ridge, went closer to the
ECMWF/GEM consensus and kept the majority of the area dry, with a
low chance of a few rain/snow showers in the Saint Lawrence Valley.
Temperatures will be fairly close to early April averages.

Tuesday night and Wednesday still look dry with general high
pressure surface and aloft dominating much of the east. More
significant model differences begin to show by Thursday, with the
ECMWF driving a cold front south of the area while the GFS keeps a
frontal boundary well north and west of the area. Either solution
would be mainly dry for our region, but there would be significant
differences in temperature depending on which side of the frontal
boundary we end up on. Model guidances comes back together by
Friday, with an area of low pressure forecast to move out of the
Ohio Valley and into the Great Lakes region. This will bring the
next chance of rain to our region, along with warmer temperatures.

.AVIATION /06Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Overnight low pressure will develop northeastward into the Ohio
Valley...and in the process will push a stalled out frontal boundary
over Pennsylvania back northward across our region. This will result
in a mix of IFR or lower conditions across higher terrain in the
southern Tier VFR/MVFR ceilings elsewhere as low moisture
increasing with the arrival of the warm front. Some light
showers will also gradually increase in coverage along and to
the north of the advancing frontal boundary... though these will
be unlikely to produce any significant reductions in
visibility.

On Saturday...elongated low pressure will make its way northeastward
across Lakes Erie and Ontario. As it does so...rain will initially
become more prevalent across far western and northern New York
during the morning...before spreading further southeastward across
interior portions of the Southern Tier and Finger Lakes during the
afternoon. Within the steadier rain flight conditions (mainly due to
ceilings) will be a mix of IFR to low-end VFR...with MVFR to VFR
conditions prevailing elsewhere.

Outlook...
Saturday night...Predominantly MVFR/IFR with rain mixing with and/or
changing to wet snow from west to east.
Sunday...A mix of rain and wet snow tapering off to some lake effect
snow showers southeast of Lake Ontario...with IFR/MVFR improving to
mainly VFR outside of the leftover lake effect.
Monday...Mainly VFR with a chance of morning snow showers/MVFR
southeast of Lake Ontario.
Tuesday and Wednesday...VFR.

Low pressure over the Mississippi Valley will push northeastward
into the Ohio Valley overnight...then across the Lower Great Lakes
on Saturday. Out ahead of this low...a short period of moderately
brisk southerlies/southwesterlies is expected on Lake Erie Saturday...
for which a Small Craft Advisory remains in effect. Following the
passage of the low winds will freshen out of the northwest late
Saturday night and Sunday...and will likely necessitate another
round of Small Craft Advisories during that time frame.
