.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure will build into the region tonight and bring partial
clearing and much colder temperatures. Broad low pressure draped
from Central Ontario to the Great Lakes will then bring a light
wintry mix of snow...sleet...and some freezing rain Monday afternoon
through early Tuesday. After brief warmup on Tuesday...colder air
will return by mid week along with some accumulating snow.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH MONDAY/...
As of early evening a few flurries and light snow showers are
still ongoing along and a little inland from the south shore of Lake
Ontario...however these will finally be winding down over the next
few hours as high pressure and much drier air continues to make
further inroads into our region. The drier air will also result
in the lingering stratocumulus field south of Lake Ontario
scattering out from north to south through the early overnight
hours...before high clouds begin to increase overnight out ahead
of the next system. The decreased cloud cover and diminishing winds
will yield good radiational cooling with lows in the mid to upper
teens, but down to near zero for interior sections of the North
Country.

High pressure moves east Monday as an elongated trough axis
approaches from the western Great Lakes. Initial surge of warm
air advection associated with a weak surface warm front will
push through during the day. Saturation process begins to ramp
up Monday morning well ahead of the approaching trough.
Precipitation type remains a much more formidable forecast
challenge, with such strong warm air advection working over an
initially cool and very dry airmass. Believe that evaporational
cooling will result in mostly snow/ice pellets initially, with
further development of elevated warm nose bringing freezing rain
concerns. Precipitation amounts during the daytime hours should
remain quite light, with any ice accumulations expected to be
limited to a glaze to perhaps a couple of hundredths, but this
could be enough to slicken up area roadways. A winter weather
advisory will be issued to cover this icing threat.

.SHORT TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/...
A mid level shortwave will move from the Upper Great Lakes Monday
evening to western Quebec by Tuesday morning, with an associated
surface low taking a similar track. An initial wing of warm
advection will ahead of the system will move northeast across the
eastern Lake Ontario region early in the evening, mainly in the form
of light snow and perhaps some sleet. A second, more organized area
of precipitation will move into Western NY during the early to mid
evening, forced by increasing DPVA ahead of the mid level trough and
strong moisture convergence on the nose of a 60+ knot low level jet.
This second area of precipitation will spread east across the
remainder of the area through the first half of the night before
tapering off from west to east during the second half of the night.

Precipitation amounts will be light in most areas, with the
exception of the southern Tug Hill where southerly upslope flow will
enhance low level forcing. A myriad of precipitation types will fall
in this warm advection regime. Surface temperatures may still be at
or just below freezing with the arrival of this second batch of
precipitation. This will produce a few more hours of freezing rain
potential in the evening across Western NY, the Genesee Valley,
western Finger Lakes, and points southeast of Lake Ontario. The
longest duration of icing is likely to be in the cooler sheltered
valleys of the Southern Tier. Ice amounts will be light, less than a
tenth of an inch.

East of Lake Ontario, the column stays colder, which will support
snow as the predominant precipitation type across Lewis and eastern
Jefferson counties, with more mix potential closer to Lake Ontario
and in Oswego County. Expect 1-3 inches of snow accumulation across
Jefferson and Lewis counties, with some local 4 inch amounts
possible across the southern Tug Hill with enhancement from
southerly upslope flow. There may be less than a tenth of an inch of
freezing rain across Oswego and southern/western Jefferson counties
as well.

Some wet snow or rain will linger into Tuesday morning east of Lake
Ontario, and possibly a few rain showers elsewhere. Otherwise expect
a break of mainly dry weather for the bulk of Tuesday as a mid level
dry slot crosses the eastern Great Lakes. Temperatures will briefly
surge into the 40s late Monday night through early afternoon
Tuesday in most areas.

Another strong mid level shortwave and associated surface low will
reach the eastern Great Lakes very late Tuesday afternoon and
evening. While model guidance is in good agreement with the large
scale features, there are some differences in the finer details as
to where the band of most persistent precipitation will develop with
this system. The initial area of precipitation will be in the form
of rain late Tuesday afternoon and evening. Cold advection will
increase Tuesday night, allowing the rain to change to snow later
Tuesday night. Precipitation will be mainly snow by Wednesday
morning, with the possible exception of the immediate lakeshores.
Some minor accumulations are expected by daybreak Wednesday across
higher terrain.

Wednesday and Wednesday night a surface low will rapidly deepen over
the Gulf of Maine before moving into the Canadian Maritimes. A deep
mid level trough will carve out across the Great Lakes and New
England, with several mid level shortwaves moving through the
longwave trough. An extended period of moist northwest flow will
setup across the eastern Great Lakes, with lake induced equilibrium
levels rising to over 8K feet with time. This will all support
widespread snow showers and embedded areas of steadier light snow
Wednesday and Wednesday night. The combination of lake enhancement
and northwest upslope flow will bring accumulating snows to the
higher terrain of the western Southern Tier, Tug Hill, and western
foothills of the Adirondacks. This may require winter headlines as
the details become more apparent and confidence increases on the
timing and placement of heavier snow amounts. Even across the lower
elevations of the lake plains expect some modest accumulations
during this time period. It will also be quite windy Wednesday and
Wednesday night with some blowing and drifting snow in areas which
receive accumulation.

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
A weakly positive PNA signal in the longwave pattern will guarantee
below normal temperatures during this period...as a persistent
trough will be found over eastern Canada and the northeastern
quarter of the Lower 48. Fortunately...H85 temps will average in the
minus teens c...so the temperature anomalies will be minimal. The
relatively cold weather will be accompanied by frequent lake snow
showers within a northwesterly flow...especially heading into the
weekend. As we proceed through the weekend...a backing flow with
weak warm advection and plenty of subsidence should squelch any
organized lake supported snow shower activity. The details...

A strong storm system exiting across the Canadian maritimes and an
expansive Arctic high centered over the Canadian prairies will
produce a deep northwesterly flow of cold air across the Lower Great
Lakes on Thursday. H85 temps of -16c will easily support lake
induced instability over the wide open unfrozen lakes...and with a
fair amount of synoptic moisture also in place and a cap of 7-
10kft...we can anticipate fairly widespread lake snow showers over
the forecast area. This activity will be enhanced somewhat by a
swath of channelled vorticity...produced by a residual 80-90kt H25
jet diving southeast from the Upper Great Lakes. The upper level
forcing will translate from west to east during the course of the
day...being more of a positive influence for lake snows off Lake
Ontario where several inches of accumulation should be expected.
Negligible amounts are anticipated elsewhere. Temperatures on
Thursday will peak in the low to mid 20s...more than 5 deg f below
normal values for this time of year. Wind chill values for most of
the will be in the upper single digits.

As the aforementioned Arctic high will build across the Upper Great
Lakes Thursday night...the cap over Lakes Erie and Ontario will drop
a few thousand feet. Meanwhile...an increasingly dry synoptic
environment will advect into the region. This will allow the lake
supported snow showers to taper off in coverage in intensity...
although scattered snow showers can still be expected regionwide.
The most widespread snow showers should be found along the south
shore of Lake Ontario into the central Finger Lakes where a couple
more inches of snow will be possible.

The trend of diminishing snow shower activity will continue Friday
into Saturday...as the large sfc high tracking by to our north will
extend across the Lower Great Lakes to the Carolinas. This will also
mean that our cloud cover will break to allow for some sun from time
to time...especially across the North Country where there will be no
lake supported cloud cover.

The strong surface high is forecast to be centered just to our north
over Quebec by the end of the weekend. Fair dry weather should thus
prevail for Sunday with nothing more than some flurries near Lake
Ontario. All in all...a good looking weekend for those traveling
through the region.

Looking further down the road...while we will be experiencing below
normal temperatures during this period...a large impressive storm
system over the northern Pacific in the vcnty of the Emperor
Seamounts will set the stage for a warm up. A strong East Asian jet
supporting this storm system will extend across the Pacific by the
end of this forecast period...and this should encourage Pacific
modified air to flood the country during the ensuing week. The
influx of the maritime airmass into the center of the country with a
pattern that typically induces ridging east of the Rockies will
favor a spell of warmer weather for our region for the week
following the end of this specific forecast period. Stay tuned.

.AVIATION /01Z MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
As of early evening a few flurries and light snow showers are
still ongoing along and a little inland from the south shore of Lake
Ontario...however these will finally be winding down over the next
few hours as high pressure and much drier air continues to make
further inroads into our region. The drier air will also result
in the lingering VFR stratocumulus field south of Lake Ontario
scattering out from north to south through the early overnight
hours...before high clouds begin to increase overnight out ahead
of the next system.

On Monday...broad low pressure draped from Manitoba to the
Mississippi Valley will translate eastward into Ontario Province
and the Upper Great Lakes...while pushing an initial weak warm
frontal boundary across western New York. Deepening moisture
out ahead of this system will result in ceilings lowering
through the VFR range...with the initial warm front producing
a brief wintry mix of precipitation and some very light icing
south of Lake Ontario. Late in the day southerly winds aloft
will ramp up significantly...leading to the development of
some strong downslope winds along the Lake Erie shoreline...
and inducing some low level wind shear concerns across the
remainder of the region.

Outlook...

Monday night..Deterioration to MVFR/IFR with another round of
light mixed precipitation changing over to rain south of Lake
Ontario.
Tuesday...MVFR/IFR with a lingering early morning wintry mix
across the North Country ending...otherwise a chance of rain
showers.
Wednesday...MVFR/IFR in fairly widespread snow showers.
Thursday...VFR/MVFR in scattered snow showers...along with
areas of IFR in lake enhancement southeast of the lakes.
Friday...VFR/MVFR with a chance of snow showers southeast
of the lakes.

.MARINE...
A brisk northerly flow will maintain advisory-worthy conditions on
Lake Ontario early this evening...with winds then slackening and
waves diminishing through the rest of the night as high pressure
ridges across the Lower Great Lakes.

On Monday winds will freshen considerably out of the southeast and
south as a tightening pressure gradient sets up between the departing
high and low pressure advancing into Ontario Province and the Upper
Great Lakes. Gale force winds are possible on the eastern end of Lake
Ontario Monday night.
