.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure will pass by well to our south resulting in a
period of light snow through tonight. This system will
intensify across eastern Canada on Monday with a persistent
northwesterly flow providing unseasonably cold conditions for the
upcoming week. There also will be periodic snow showers and
potentially significant lake effect snow east and southeast of
Lake Ontario.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
A weak area of low pressure across the southeastern states will
quickly strengthen as it tracks off the mid-Atlantic coast
tonight and to Nova Scotia on Monday. For our area, the main
feature of concern is the shortwave and associated jet streak
which are contributing to the intensification of this system.
BUFKIT shows mid and upper level lift which is likely due to
favorable jet dynamics and the passage of the shortwave. The
result will be light snow spreading into the region from south
to north late this afternoon and evening. There will be a brief
mesoscale enhancement south of Lake Ontario when winds shift to
the northwest behind the system after midnight. Even with this,
snowfall amounts from this system will be modest and generally
in the 1 to 3 inch range. Snow will taper off to scattered snow
showers late tonight. This also will advect colder air into the
region, with temperatures falling into the teens by late
tonight.

&&

.SHORT TERM /MONDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/...
...Significant lake snows will be possible southeast of Lake
Ontario...

The deepening coastal low will rapidly exit across the Gulf of Maine
early Monday morning with any lingering synoptic/upslope snow
showers ending in the morning. A narrow surface ridge will then
build across the eastern Great Lakes through most of Monday. The
associated low level shear and relatively low inversion heights will
keep the lake response to a minimum through late afternoon, with
just a few scattered light snow showers southeast of the lakes. A
few diurnally driven snow showers are also possible during the
afternoon given cold air aloft and steep low level lapse rates.
Temperatures will be well below average, with highs in the upper
teens to lower 20s.

The lake response will likely improve Monday evening through early
Tuesday morning as boundary layer flow becomes better aligned across
the lakes. Lake induced equilibrium levels will steadily rise to
around 10K feet over Lake Ontario, and synoptic scale moisture will
begin to improve. WNW boundary layer flow in the evening will allow
a band of snow to organize at the southeast corner of the lake
centered on southern Oswego County, and possibly clipping northern
Cayuga and northeast Wayne counties as well. Later Monday night into
Tuesday morning boundary layer flow will slowly back to the west,
carrying the lake effect snow slowly northward across Oswego County.
Expect at least advisory snow amounts Monday night southeast of Lake
Ontario, with a low potential for warning amounts mainly in Oswego
County.

Lake Erie won't do much during this period given the extensive
coverage of thick ice, with just a few periods of scattered light
snow showers east of the lake from any small openings in the lake
ice.

During the day Tuesday a mid level trough and associated surface
cold front will cross the region. Lake effect snow east of Lake
Ontario will move north across the Tug Hill region to Jefferson
County in the morning and weaken as shear increases ahead of the
trough. The mid level trough and cold front will produce fairly
widespread snow during the afternoon and early evening with a period
of DPVA, deep moisture, and frontal convergence. The greater amounts
will be east and northeast of both lakes Erie and Ontario due to
lake enhancement, and enhanced low level convergence from
terrain/lake interactions. Even the frozen Lake Erie can help
enhance the snow in this manner. Expect a general 1 to 3 inches of
accumulation Tuesday and Tuesday evening, with the greater amounts
east and northeast of the lakes. Gusty winds with the frontal
passage will produce some blowing snow.

Following the trough and cold frontal passage late Tuesday, we will
get back into a more pure lake response Tuesday night into
Wednesday. Boundary layer flow will quickly veer to the WNW again,
focusing the bulk of the heavier Lake Ontario snow over the
southeast corner of the lake including Oswego, northern Cayuga, and
Wayne counties. Expect the best band organization and greatest
intensity late Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning when lake
induced equilibrium levels rise to 15K feet, and convergence
maximizes over the lake. This time period appears to be the best
window for true warning criteria snow amounts and impact southeast
of Lake Ontario.

The GFS suggests boundary layer flow will veer a little more by
Wednesday afternoon to the northwest. If this occurs, lake effect
snow would weaken and become multi-banded across a wide area south
and southeast of Lake Ontario, including the Rochester area.
Conditions remain favorable for lake effect snow southeast of Lake
Ontario through Wednesday night with additional accumulations
possible.

Ice cover will again keep Lake Erie activity very limited Tuesday
night through Wednesday night, relegated to mainly upslope flow snow
showers across the higher terrain of the western Southern Tier. The
WNW flow direction may allow for difficult to forecast Lake Huron
banding to meander across Western NY and the western Finger Lakes at
times Tuesday night through Wednesday night. Diurnally driven snow
showers are also likely Wednesday even away from lake bands.

Given the frequent changes in wind direction, this will be a
challenging lake effect snow event to forecast. In March diurnal
influences often become an issue as well, with vertical diurnal
mixing interfering with delicate band structure during the afternoon
and evening, yielding cellular snow showers instead of solid lake
bands. The best organization is typically late night and early
morning when diurnal mixing is not present. We have held off on a
Winter Storm Watch for now, but a watch will likely be needed as
confidence increases in band intensity, placement, and timing. The
most likely area for watch/warning criteria snow amounts is
southeast of the lake.

Temperatures will be close to 20F below average through the period.
Highs Tuesday and Wednesday will only be in the teens, with lows in
the single digits away from the immediate Lake Ontario shore. Wind
chills will be below zero at times.

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Lake effect snow showers will continue southeast of Lake Ontario
through at least Thursday, and possibly into Thursday night as cold
WNW flow remains in place. Boundary layer moisture will slowly
lessen through this period, and inversion heights will begin to
drop, forcing the lake effect snow to gradually weaken. Lake effect
snow will finally end by Friday as a surface ridge builds across the
eastern Great Lakes.

The latest 00Z GFS, GEM, and ECMWF have trended south and weaker
with an approaching low Friday and Saturday. The latest runs of
these models keep the majority of the precipitation chances south of
our region with just a little light snow possible for the western
Southern Tier.

Temperatures will remain cold through Thursday before moderating
back closer to average next weekend as the deep trough in the
eastern US relaxes.

.AVIATION /18Z SUNDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Lingering stratus early this afternoon will mainly be above 3k
feet, with patchy MVFR conditions in lower clouds. Light snow
will spread from S-N between 21Z-01Z and lower visibility to 1-2
miles. The snow will last through most of the evening hours, and
then taper off to scattered snow showers late tonight.
Conditionswill improve to mainly MVFR by late tonight from
stratus in the MVFR flight category.

On Monday expect stratus to scatter and lift a bit during the
day with a mix of VFR and MVFR flight conditions. There will be
scattered snow showers, which will be brief with a minimal
impact. Lake effect snow will develop southeast of Lake Ontario
late Monday afternoon.

Outlook...

Monday night...Mainly VFR with areas of IFR or lower southeast
of Lake Ontario.

Tuesday...MVFR/IFR in snow showers.

Tuesday night through Thursday...Areas of
lake effect snow and attendant IFR/LIFR east and southeast of
Lake Ontario.

Tonight strengthening low pressure will track from the
Carolinas to a position southeast of Cape Cod...which will
result in winds turning more north-northwesterly and freshening
somewhat.

a deep cold trough sets up across the Great Lakes. This will likely
