.SYNOPSIS...
Deep low pressure over the Canadian Maritimes will pull further
away from our region tonight and Tuesday, while high pressure
slowly builds eastward across the Great Lakes. This will allow
lingering gusty winds to diminish tonight. Meanwhile lingering lake
snows east of Lake Erie will wind down tonight...with lake snows
southeast of Lake Ontario doing the same on Tuesday. Otherwise the
area will see a return to much quieter weather through Tuesday...
before another weather system brings a widespread light to moderate
accumulating snowfall later Tuesday night and Wednesday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TUESDAY/...
As of 740 pm...have dropped all remaining Wind Advisories and
Blizzard Warnings east and southeast of Lake Ontario...as winds
have fallen below advisory levels and should continue to
diminish through the rest of the night...and lake snows have
shifted into far southern Oswego county and appear relatively
unimpressive on radar. To cover these...have at the same time
expanded the existing Winter Weather Advisory for Wayne and
Northern Cayuga counties eastward to Oswego county.
Through the rest of the night...the Lake Ontario lake snows will
continue to very slowly shift southwestward in response to a gradual
veering of the low level wind field to northwesterly...which will
eventually take the most persistent snows into Wayne and Northern
Cayuga counties. While inversion heights will not be that impressive
and only on the order of 5-7 kft...the cold airmass and the potential
development of an upstream connection to Lake Huron should still be
enough to support some additional accumulations of 2-4"/3-5" in the
Wayne-southern Oswego county corridor...which in tandem with
lingering gusty winds to 40 mph is certainly enough to justify the
Winter Weather Advisories. As we move into the overnight hours...
there will also be some further westward expansion of the Lake
Ontario lake snows into areas from eastern Niagara county over to
Monroe county...where accumulations of up to an inch will be
possible by daybreak.
Meanwhile off of Lake Erie...a narrow but persistent band of lake
effect snow has slipped further south into extreme far southern Erie
and Wyoming counties. This could produce another inch or two of
fresh accumulation...before a further decrease in the capping
inversion to around 3 kft and a shortening fetch causes this band to
break up into much more scattered snow showers later this evening.
Outside of these areas...the rest of the region will just see some
scattered snow showers and flurries tonight...with lingering wind
gusts to 35-40 mph and sustained winds of 15-30 mph early this
evening continuing to slowly but steadily subside areawide.
Otherwise it will be a cold night...with lows falling to around
zero across the North Country and the 10 to 15 range elsewhere.
On Tuesday high pressure will continue to make further inroads into
our region. An attendant lowering cap...low level drying...and late
season diurnal influences will result in lingering lake snows
southeast of Lake Ontario breaking up into much more scattered snow
showers...though not before producing another inch or two of
accumulation from eastern Niagara county all the way over to Cayuga
county. Outside of these the day should be largely dry...with highs
only ranging from the mid teens across the North Country to the
upper teens and lower 20s elsewhere.

.SHORT TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/...
The passage of a subtle mid level ridge and associated sfc high will
further lower a limiting 5k ft cap over Lake Ontario Tuesday
evening...and this will bring an end to any residual light snow
shower or flurry activity. Otherwise...clouds will gradually
increase and thicken across the forecast area during the course of
the night. A relatively steep baroclinic zone stretching east from
Wisconsin and Lower Michigan will approach our region. While the
strongest forcing over this H925-70 boundary will be to our west...
some light snow could break out over the western counties after
midnight.
As a robust shortwave digs southeast from Manitoba on Wednesday...a
trough carving across the Upper Great lakes will lead to nominal
cyclogenesis within an established inverted trough over the Upper
Mid West/Ohio Valley. The resulting weak surface low will lead to
further strengthening of the aforementioned baroclinic zone...which
will effectively be pushed northeast to the western counties of New
York. Strong frontogenetic forcing with this boundary will lead to
fairly widespread light to occasionally moderate snow...which could
accumulate several inches between late Tuesday night through
Wednesday. From this vantage point though...amounts will probably
stay JUST below advisory criteria.
The weak surface low will pass close to our region Wednesday evening
before exiting off the New Jersey coast overnight. Steady light snow
associated with this feature will quickly taper off from west to
east...with the majority of the remaining snow falling by midnight.
Additional snowfall amounts for the nighttime hours will only range
from an inch or two.
On Thursday...a wedge of high pressure will cross the Lower Great
Lakes. While this will nearly insure fair dry weather for our
region...there have been some timing issues with this system in
previous guidance packages...so will maintain slight chc pops.
A very weak trough will pass over the region Thursday night and
early Friday morning. Forcing from this subtle feature will be
minimal...so will attempt to maintain some of continuity by using
low chc pops for otherwise uneventful scattered light snow showers.
Another weak surface high will build across our forecast area on
Friday. While this will support fair weather to end the work week...
conditions are likely to deteriorate later Friday night into the
weekend. Confidence with this next system will be lower than usual
though...as the medium range guidance packages have been at odds
with how to handle the southern stream energy. The GFS has been
favoring a phased system that would track to our west...but the
lastest 12z run has many of the GEFS ensembles coming more in line
with the ECMWF...which develops a system off the coast. Stay tuned.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY/...
Model guidance has shown a good deal of run to run changes with
respect to the forecast for this weekend. The 12Z guidance has
started to converge on a more common solution with the handling of
low pressure and an associated mid level wave moving out of the mid
section of the nation. Some previous GFS runs had been very
aggressive with another strong cutter low moving through the central
Great Lakes, which would have brought a significant warm-up followed
by another high wind event. The ECMWF has been consistently weaker
and much farther south and east with this system, and now the 12Z
GFS is trending strongly in that direction.
The latest model trends in the 12Z guidance are quickly taking the
potential for another wind event off the table. Instead, the
emerging consensus takes a much weaker low over us, or even to our
south which would produce a modest snow event. Temperatures will
also not warm much if this current track verifies, with near average
temperatures Saturday as the system moves through.
Following the Saturday system, a deep trough will become established
across the Great Lakes and New England. This will bring well below
normal temperatures for Sunday and Monday, along with at least some
lake effect potential east and southeast of the lakes.
The cold air will have some staying power, with the latest 8-14 day
outlook from CPC continuing to show high probabilities of below
normal temperatures across a wide swath of the nation. Expect mid
winter cold to last through the first 10 days of March.

.AVIATION /01Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Tonight a narrow band of lingering light lake snows well south of
KBUF/KGVQ will break up into scattered snow showers this evening.
Meanwhile...ongoing light lake snows currently near and just
southwest of KFZY will gradually shift/expand southwestward along
much of the south shore of Lake Ontario. Expect IFR conditions to
prevail within these bands...with a mix of MVFR to VFR conditions
prevailing elsewhere. Otherwise lingering gusty westerly to
northwesterly winds will continue to slowly but steadily diminish
through the night.
On Tuesday high pressure will build into the region...and this
combined with late winter diurnal influences will result in the
Lake Ontario lake snows breaking up into some remnant scattered snow
showers. As a result...lingering IFR/MVFR conditions within the
lake snows/lake clouds will improve to VFR areawide.
Outlook...
Wednesday...Widespread light to moderate snow and attendant IFR
conditions developing.
Thursday and Friday...Mainly VFR.
Saturday...Snow and IFR/MVFR likely.

A deep area of low pressure will track across the Canadian Maritimes
tonight, continuing strong westerly winds across the Lakes and
Niagara River. Winds will continue to diminish, Small craft
advisories on the Niagara River and Lake Erie with gales in effect
on Lake Ontario.
A heavy freezing spray warning is in effect for Lake Ontario through
tonight. The combination of strong winds, high waves and
temperatures falling below freezing will result in heavy freezing
spray on vessels.
It will not be until Tuesday night when a surface high pressure
nears the region that winds and waves will diminish back to fair
boating weather.
