.SYNOPSIS...
A pair of upper air disturbances will move from the Upper Great
lakes across our forecast area during the next couple days...and
this will result in widely scattered snow showers with accumulating
lake snows east and southeast of the lakes. The most significant
accumulations through Friday will be across parts of the Southern
Tier. Looking further ahead...a notable warm up is expected Sunday
into the start of next week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/...
Conditions will gradually deteriorate across the region during this
period...as a pair of robust shortwaves will track southeast from
the Upper Great Lakes. The first of these features can be seen in WV
imagery late this afternoon over Lake Michigan. As it approaches
during the first half of tonight...marginally unstable air within a
a backing flow below 10k ft will direct lake enhanced rain and wet
snow showers across Erie county...and eventually across Jefferson
county.

H85 temps will only be in the vcnty of -6c...which will barely be
cold enough to support lake induced instability over the lakes.
Initially...the synoptic moisture will not be deep enough to extend
into the dendritic growth zone...so the bulk of the lake response
will be in the form of rain showers. This will especially be the
case off Lake Erie. As we progress into the overnight though...
deepening moisture will encourage more efficient snow production.
The question will then be how cold will be low levels be for the wet
snow to accumulate. This should not be a problem for elevated
surfaces...but unless the snow is moderately heavy...it may have
trouble sticking to most roads. This will prove to be critical in
the BUF metro area where a well defined band should be in place by
the morning rush hour. Will stay with a mix at this point...but if
it falls as snow...roadways could become slick for the morning
commute. This will continue to be evaluated by the ensuing forecast
shifts.

Otherwise...the passage of the first shortwave will support enough
synoptic lift for scattered snow showers. Temperatures will not drop
much from those of this afternoon. Mins will range from the low to
mid 20s east of Lake Ontario to around freezing near Lake Erie.

On Wednesday...the first shortwave will be exiting the region via
the St Lawrence Valley while a second swath of channelled/ribbon
vorticity will streak by across Michigan and Ohio. Weak cold
advection over the region will support a stronger response off the
lakes...while veering winds within the steering low will direct
steadier lake snows into the Southern Tier and eventually the Tug
Hill region. While some of the lake snow could still mix with rain
(due to abv freezing temps nr surface)...snowfall rates of a half to
one inch an hour will be possible near the Chautauqua Ridge. A
winter weather advisory was issued earlier for this area where up to
three inches of snow could fall by late Wednesday afternoon. Lesser
amounts are expected across Jefferson county due to a shorter 240
fetch over Lake Ontario. Will use high chc to likely pops for
outside of the lake effect due to passing shortwaves in the
deepening cyclonic flow.

The cold advection will increase the instability over both lakes
Wednesday afternoon and night...and as the cap rises to roughly
12kft over Lk Erie...a stronger lake response can be expected.
Snowfall rates should more consistently average around an inch near
the Chautauqua ridge. This may eventually warrant an upgrade from
the current advisory to a lake effect snow warning. Stay Tuned.
Meanwhile east of Lake Ontario...the veering flow will support
more transitory lake snow...with the bulk of the snow pushing from
the Tug Hill Wednesday evening to western Oswego...northern Oswego
and Wayne counties by daybreak Thursday. This will help to limit the
snowfall for any given spot...with Wednesday night totals forecast
to range from 2 to 4 inches.

&&

.SHORT TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
Lake effect snow off of both Lake Erie and Lake Ontario will
continue through most of the morning east and southeast of both
lakes. As the trough over the area moves east, along with its
associated synoptic moisture lake snows will start to taper off
during the late morning/early afternoon. As this is occurring,
ridging over the area will also increase helping to weaken the lake
response. Weak warm air advection will occur from late Thursday
afternoon through Friday morning, this as a large area of high
pressure tracks east to the Atlantic coast. Additional snowfall
amounts of an inch to an inch and a half is likely in the areas of
lake effect snow. Temperatures on Thursday will be in the upper 20s
to near 30 across the higher terrain and in the low 30s for the
lower elevations.

Thursday night, a wave of energy over the Northern Plains will track
southeast across the Great Lakes overnight. As this area tracks
southeast, a deepening trough will develop, resulting in a surface
low to form over the southern Great Lakes, and track east. As this
system approaches the area, snow will overspread the western part of
the area by around daybreak on Friday. Temperatures Thursday night
will be in the low to mid 20s across the higher terrain and in the
upper 20s to near 30 for the lower elevations.

On Friday, the area of low pressure causing widespread snowfall will
track along the NY/PA border through the day, causing light snow to
overspread the area. Uncertainty still exists within guidance where
the center of the low will track, and the strength of the low. The
GFS has a weak shortwave that crosses the area and develops into an
area of low pressure off the coast. The ECMWF and the Canadian
models have a better developed low over the region, but the ECMWF
tracks the center over the NY/PA line and the Canadian tracks the
low across Lake Ontario. With the banding of precipitation north of
the low center, track of the low will be important to snow amounts.
Currently one to three inches of snow is expected, with the lower
amounts in the Genesee Valley and Northern Finger Lakes, where
precip timing and slightly warmer afternoon temperatures may inhibit
snow ratios, resulting in lower snow amounts overall. Temperatures
on Friday will be in the low to mid 30s for most areas and in the
upper 20s to near 30 for the higher terrain east of Lake Ontario. As
the area of low pressure passes to the east, cold air advection will
begin across the area. 850H temperatures will drop to -11 to -15
across the area by Friday evening.

Friday night with cold air advection continuing, a weak lake
response will be possible on a northwest flow and synoptic moisture
still present with the trough over the area. A coating to half of an
inch of snow is expected Friday night before the lake response
becomes weak. Ridging from an approaching area of high pressure will
help further reduce the lake response off of both lakes.
Temperatures on Friday night will be in the upper teens to low 20s
for most areas and in the mid teens east of Lake Ontario.

Saturday and Saturday night, an area of high pressure will track
from the Ohio Valley to the Mid-Atlantic coast from Saturday through
Sunday morning. This will result in dry conditions from Saturday
through Saturday night. Cold air advection will hold steady through
most of Saturday before warm air advection begins late Saturday as
the area of high pressure shifts to the east and a southerly flow
takes over. Temperatures on Saturday will be in the low to mid 20s
for areas east of Lake Ontario and in the higher terrain of the
Western Southern Tier. Temperatures will be in the low 30s across
the lake plains of Lake Erie and south of Lake Ontario. Saturday
night lows will be in the upper teens to mid 20s for the higher
terrain and areas east of Lake Ontario, and in the upper 20s to low
30s elsewhere.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
High pressure will continue to keep dry weather for Sunday. Warming
temperatures will begin Sunday as warm air advection increases over
the region. Highs in the upper 30s to lower 40s for Sunday, with mid
30s across the higher terrain east of Lake Ontario.

A cold front extending southwest from a weak area of low pressure
located across central Quebec will approach the area Sunday night,
then stall just northwest of the Canadian border Monday leaving us
on the warmer side of the boundary. Low level moisture being drawn
northward all the way from the GOMEX will aid in the development of
rain showers across the area Sunday night that will last into
Monday. There may be a brief rain/snow mix at the start Sunday night
across the higher terrain east of Lake Ontario before changing over
to plain rain here as well.

.AVIATION /20Z TUESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Cigs have already dropped to MVFR levels across the far western
counties..and as we make our way through the first half of
tonight...increased low level moisture ahead of an approaching
shortwave will push cigs down to MVFR levels at the remaining
TAF sites. The lowering cigs will be accompanied by blossoming
lake rain and snow showers northeast of both lakes...especially
after 03z. This could result in IFR conditons at KBUF and KART.

Widespread MVFR to IFR conditions will be in place across western
and north central New York Wednesday and Wednesday night along with
the likelihood for snow showers. Lake snows southeast of both lakes
will result in LIFR to VLIFR vsbys at KJHW and possibly KELZ.

Outlook...
Thursday and Friday...MVFR in scattered snow showers. More focused
lake snows will maintain IFR conditions southeast of both lakes.
Saturday and Sunday...VFR.

.MARINE...
Winds will freshen throughout the Lower Great Lakes tonight...as the
first of two shortwaves will cross the region. This earlier prompted
a small craft advisory to be issued for Lake Erie. Winds and waves
should remain below small craft advisory levels on Lake Ontario
until late Wednesday and Wednesday night.

Fresh to occasionally strong westerlies are then anticipated
Thursday into Friday...with only a short break in the winds Thursday
night. This should support long duration small craft advisories.

county tonight. While the activity should be a mix of rain and wet
snow...there is the potential that the precipitation could change to

roadways.

Moderately heavy lake effect will be found over the northern half of
the county during the morning. While the activity could be mixed...
