Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Buffalo NY 1059 AM EDT Mon Oct 28 2019 .SYNOPSIS... High pressure moving from Pennsylvania to the Canadian maritimes will supply fine Fall weather for the region through Tuesday. Our attention will then turn to a storm system that will intensify while moving by to our west and north during the second half of the week. This will lead to another widespread soaking rain that will be followed by very strong winds. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/... High pressure stretching from Pennsylvania to New England will supply us with a fine afternoon...as a wealth of sunshine will encourage temperatures to climb well into the 60s. At these levels...the mercury will average some 10 to 15 degrees above normal. High pressure will slide off the New England coast tonight, with a light southerly flow developing. Skies will be mainly clear for much of the night until mid and high clouds approach from the west and low clouds approach from the south. There may be some limited radiational cooling during the evening hours before winds pick up after midnight. As a result, lows will not stray far from the mid 40s. Expect temperatures to rise along the Lake Erie shoreline late in the night due to a 15 to 20 mph southerly downslope flow. && .SHORT TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/... This period will start dry, with some sunshine on Tuesday before clouds increase by Tuesday night with a few rain showers around as a baroclinic boundary drops across our region. Tuesday an area of high pressure will be just to the east of New England...and over western Atlantic Canada. With upper level ridging nearby we should go through the day dry, though mid level moisture will increase...both from an easterly flow of Atlantic moisture and moisture associated with a nearing frontal boundary. A southerly flow will bring most areas into the 60s, with a downslope flow bringing mid to potentially upper 60s across the Lake Plain and Genesee Valley. As low pressure tracks across central Quebec Tuesday night, it will drag a cold front into our region. This will be a weak boundary, with low chances for showers Tuesday night. On Wednesday this frontal boundary will lift northward as an elevated warm front as a deep trough dips into the southern Mississippi Valley. A few rain showers will be possibly along this elevated boundary. At the surface winds will be northerly over a good portion of the region and this will keep afternoon temperatures in the low to mid 50s for much of the region. This upper level trough will later develop an inverted surface trough that will extend into the Ohio Valley and SW NYS by Wednesday evening. As a result rain showers will begin to increase across SW NYS late in the day Wednesday afternoon. && .LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/... Wednesday night through Thursday night a deep mid level trough over the central Plains will consolidate, and become negatively tilted as it tracks across the Central Great Lakes. This feature will take a surface low over the Mississippi Valley, deepen it as it passes to our west and then north Thursday night. This will result in our weather steadily deteriorating through this period as both moisture and large-scale lift increase across our region out ahead of the approaching/organizing surface low...with increasing chances for showers Wednesday night giving way to a steadier soaking rain Thursday and Thursday night. Timing of the heavier rain later Thursday and into Thursday evening would put a significant damper on Halloween trick-or-treaters. Depending on the exact track and strength of this system...there will also be the likelihood for a period of strong southwesterly winds in the wake of its trailing cold front late Thursday night through Friday...with AT LEAST advisory-criteria gusts. In one of the more pessimistic forecasts...the ECMWF is suggesting a fairly deep trop fold (1.5 PV sfc to 800 mb)...which is typical for the stronger wind events. Am starting to think about a high wind watch at this point for the event...aiming primarily at the usual corridor from Lake Erie and the IAG Frontier to Monroe and Jefferson counties. For the immediate time being...will continue to highlight this potential of strong winds within the Hazardous Weather Outlook. Stay tuned. Following the passage of the surface low and its trailing cold front...the potential for strong winds will persist into Friday... with the combination of cold air advection and wraparound moisture on its backside otherwise supporting falling temperatures and additional scattered to numerous rain showers. After that...broad upper level troughing will become established across the eastern two thirds of the continent...and will help to feed much colder air across our region through next weekend...with consensus 850 mb temperatures falling into the middle negative single digits per the GFS/GEM/ECMWF. Such an airmass would easily be enough to support a lake response downwind of both lakes...though the initially relatively dry nature of the colder air could help to at least somewhat inhibit this Friday night into Saturday. For now have indicated mid- range chance PoPs within the most favored areas throughout this period... with the marginally cold enough temperatures potentially allowing for a mix of rain and snow showers over the weekend...especially across the higher terrain. Otherwise...we can expect temperatures to average solidly below normal through this period. && .AVIATION /15Z MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/... As the last vestiges of the morning fog and low stratus burn off across the Southern Tier...high pressure moving east from Pennsylvania will supply the region with fair dry aviation conditions. The widespread VFR weather from the afternoon will continue through tonight into Tuesday. The exception may be across the Southern Tier where another round of valley fog and stratus could lead to several hours of IFR conditions for KJHW and KELZ. Outlook... Tuesday night...VFR. Wednesday...VFR/MVFR with a chance of showers. Thursday...MVFR with rain developing. Friday...MVFR. Windy with showers likely. && .MARINE... Winds and waves will continue to diminish this afternoon across the Lower Great Lakes...as high pressure centered over Pennsylvania will drift to the east. This will keep a weak surface pressure gradient over the region through the first half of tonight. Freshening southeast winds on the backside of the exiting high pressure will generate choppy conditions on the eastern third of Lake Ontario later tonight into Tuesday...although the highest wave action will be in Canadian waters. Elsewhere...winds and waves will remain below small craft advisory conditions. Looking ahead...low pressure that is forecast to intensify as it moves to our west and north late Thursday and Friday will result in strengthening winds.
