.SYNOPSIS...
While fair weather will persist through the first half of tonight...
a large storm system over the nations mid section will lumber to the
east and gradually spread a wintry mix of precipitation across our
region late tonight through the second half of the weekend. At least
several inches of snow will fall east of Rochester...while snow will
change to a period of sleet and freezing rain over the western
counties. This will certainly impact holiday travel Sunday and
Sunday night.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
A 1032 mb high centered over James Bay will continue to provide
quite and dry weather today. Again, at least through mid-morning
no real change with mainly cloudy skies and chilly temperatures.
The challenge, when will this low stratus deck begin to relinquish
its grip on the area. Per latest guidance, there is some hint of
this occuring by mid-morning to early afternoon. We'll see, not to
confident that this will occur and don't get your hopes up of seeing
much if any sunshine at all. Why, our next weather maker over the
midwest will likely dash any of those hopes. If the low stratus deck
does diminish, what it will reveal is a layer of mid and high clouds
spilling in across the area. If you do want some sunshine, the best
chances will likely be well to our east and north across North Central
NY. Otherwise, expect another mostly cloudy day and chilly. Look for
highs in the mid to upper 20s east of Lake Ontario, with low to
possibly mid 30s for the rest of our forecast area.
Tonight, high pressure to our north will weaken in advance of the
storm system over the midwest tracking east. However, it will still
have a tight grip on our region. Speaking of which, it will take
some time for the precipitation shield with its associated warm front
to overcome the dry air in the low levels between 750mb- 900mb.
Thinking the leading edge will erode a bit as it lifts from southwest
to northeast out of Ohio towards Western NY. So with that said, have
delayed the start time of precipitation a bit with the majority of
the first half of the night remaining precipitation free. However,
sounding profiles moisten the second half and the leading edge of
precipitation will enter our area just before day break. This will
likely occur as isentropic lift strengthens and the 40-50 knot LLJ
enters our region. At this point, not expected significant snowfall
accumulations across far Western NY with the warm frontal precipitation.
Infact, P-type will quickly transition over to a mix of sleet/freezing
rain.
In terms of temperatures, lows overnight will fall back into the
teens east of Lake Ontario with 20s elsewhere.

.SHORT TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
...Mixed Wintry Precipitation to Impact Travel Sunday and Sunday
night...
The primary impacts of a winter storm will be felt during the day
Sunday when an area of mixed precipitation moves from southwest to
northeast across the region. A warm layer of about +4C will quickly
change precipitation to freezing rain across the Southern Tier since
surface temperatures will still be in the upper 20s Sunday morning.
As stacked low pressure centered near southern Lake Michigan
transitions to a coastal low, the LLJ ahead of this system will
weaken as it moves across our region. This will weaken the push of
warm air aloft with the Buffalo to Rochester area likely to be a
transition zone with sleet and freezing rain before thermal profiles
support all (or mostly) snow northeast of Rochester. The
precipitation will only last 3-6 hours, with the greatest impact on
the Buffalo/Rochester metro areas Sunday morning through early
afternoon. Snow will last through the afternoon hours east of Lake
Ontario. 00Z model guidance is in good agreement for Sunday, with
only minor differences in timing and thermal profiles. Latest
consensus does support slowing the timing slightly. Despite
consensus QPF of around a half inch across the Niagara Frontier,
much of this will fall as sleet. This is why the ice forecast is not
higher even though surface temperatures should remain below freezing
for most of the day. Also, expect minimal along the Lake Erie
shoreline due to downsloping and warmer temperatures off the
Chautauqua Ridge.
The upper level low will track southeastward across West Virginia
Sunday night, while the surface low 'jumps' to the Jersey coast.
Lacking a clear focus precipitation will taper off during the first
half of Sunday night. Even though 850mb temperatures will only be
around -1C, thermal profiles are below freezing with deep moisture
so expect any precipitation to be mainly snow.
There is lower confidence in late Sunday night into Monday since
model agreement deteriorates. Our region will be on the northwestern
fringe of a developing coastal low, with some models effectively
transporting Atlantic moisture westward into our region while others
keep the bulk of this just to our east. Either way, snow will re-
develop across most of the area, but amounts will depend on the
evolution of the coastal low and associated mid level jet. Snow
accumulation should be light across far Western New York, an inch or
less. However, east of Rochester several inches of snow are
possible. Based on this uncertainty, will maintain the Winter Storm
Watch with forecast amounts right at critical thresholds. Also kept
advisory headlines, but did break out Monroe, Wayne, and Ontario
counties since precipitation will start later here and will be
primarily snow. It's also possible this advisory may need to be
extended depending on the Monday portion of the storm.
The surface low will gradually slide eastward while mid-level
ridging builds in from the west on Monday night. There may be some
lingering snow showers east of Rochester Monday evening which will
taper off by daybreak Tuesday.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Temperatures gradually trending below normal with chances for some
lake effect snow as several shortwaves pass through the Lower Lakes
during this period.
Transitory ridging will briefly provide a period of quiet and dry
weather Tuesday. Well, that is it for the quiet and dry weather as
the first of several shortwaves will dig across the Great Lakes
Tuesday night. It will turn colder Wednesday following the passage
of the shortwave and associated cold front. Colder air wrapping in
behind the front (H850T falling to -6/8C) and deeper synoptic
moisture will likely trigger some lake response, especially east and
southeast of the lakes as wind flow veers to WNW'erly. While there
is plenty of time for models to change, accumulating snows look
possible during the Wednesday and Wednesday night time frame.
Thursday, synoptic moisture pulls away and warm advection processes
take place across the Lower Lakes. So any remaining lake snows will
wither away over the course of the day and shut down as equilibrium
levels fall. After that, it should be relatively quiet Thursday
night with weak surface high passing through New York State ahead of
the next shortwave. While there is some uncertainty with the next
system (magnitude of the cold air (GFS H850T -14/-18C, ECMWF -10/-
12C), it looks like at this point it will turn colder to a
degree behind the front. Only time will tell how cold it will
be. Again, this will likely encourage some lake response Friday
into Saturday. However, this time around synoptic moisture isn't
as plentiful. Stay tuned...

.AVIATION /14Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
High pressure will maintain quite weather today. Lingering low level
moisture will continue to produce MVFR CIGS at most terminals
through about mid-morning. As the day progresses, the low level
moisture will likely begin to mix with a bit of drier air aloft.
This should encourage this low cloud deck to thin and potentially
dissipate. If this occurs expect VFR for the remainder of the day.
Tonight, while VFR conditions will likely prevail a majority of the
night look for lowering and thickening cloud cover. Low pressure
will track east overnight bringing a wintry mix to area terminals.
This will likely cause significant impacts to aviation operations on
Sunday.

Monday...MVFR/IFR with snow showers likely. Tuesday...VFR.
Wednesday...VFR with pockets of MVFR in lake effect snow showers.

A 1032mb high center over James Bay will continue to provide light
NNE'erly flow across the Lower Lakes today with minimal wave action.
Tonight, low pressure over the Midwest moves towards the region. As
it does so, a tightening pressure graident between the high to our
north and low will strengthening ENE flow across the Lower Lakes.
This will bring about higher wave action, especially for the western
end of Lake Ontario. A Small Craft Advisory has been issued for Lake
Ontario from the Niagara River to Sodus Bay through Monday. Low
pressure departs slowly departs the region on Monday with winds and
waves gradually relaxing across the region Monday night into
Tuesday.
