.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure will build across our region and provide fair
weather for most of the day today. A moisture-laden area of low
pressure will track across the eastern Great Lakes and bring a
soaking rain to the region tonight into Sunday, along with
windy conditions. In the wake of this system, high pressure will
build across the area and bring a return to sunshine and above
normal temperatures for Monday and Tuesday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
There still is considerable cloud cover lingering across the region
early this morning and this has limited fog development. This
said, satellite imagery shows a few breaks have developed which
has allowed localized fog to develop. This is located mainly
across the western Finger Lakes region.

After this, high pressure will build across the region this
morning before moving into New England this afternoon. This will
advect drier air and promote morning sunshine before the next system
starts to again spread thickening/lowering clouds into western New
York this afternoon. The vast majority of the daylight hours will be
dry with the exception of far western New York where rain will begin
to move in mid to late afternoon. Otherwise, temperatures will be
near normal today with highs in the 50s.

A closed mid-level low will tap into the remnants of Tropical Storm
Olga and strengthen as it tracks across the Mississippi Valley today
and across the eastern Great Lakes tonight. 00Z guidance, and in
particular the NAM, is stronger with this system and its associated
low level jet (LLJ). A 55 to 65 knot southerly LLJ with this system
will spread into the region resulting in mid-level warm air and
moisture advection tonight. There will be a soaking rainfall across
the entire region tonight. As often is the case, the southerly flow
will downslope which supports the lower QPF depicted by high
resolution guidance along I-90 west of Rochester. There will be a
corresponding maximum across the open waters of Lake Erie and
Ontario, which lower resolution guidance may bleed too far onto
land. In general, expecting rainfall amounts in the 0.75 to 1.25
inch range with the greatest amounts across Niagara County and along
the southern portions of the Tug Hill and western Adirondacks.

The stronger LLJ also increases confidence that winds will reach
advisory criteria along the Lake Erie shoreline downwind of the
Chautauqua Ridge. If the NAM verifies, there's a risk for advisory
gusts of 50 mph across the North Country and even across some of the
Southern Tier terrain. One mitigating factor is that it will be
raining when the core of this jet moves across and this tends to
diminish peak gusts. For now, will issue a wind advisory for
Chautauqua and southern Erie Counties starting tonight. It is
possible additional counties will have to be added.

The downsloping will result in steady or rising temperatures across
the lake plains tonight, with low temperatures not much lower than
todays highs. The only exception is east of Lake Ontario where winds
may briefly go calm this evening before winds pickup.

.SHORT TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
A mature storm system will continue across the Great Lakes region to
open this forecast period.

Sunday a well developed dry slot will be entering WNY, bringing an
end to the moderate rain and maybe even allowing for a few hours
with little precipitation. Meanwhile warm conveyor belt rains will
continue across our central and eastern zones. While a soaking rain
continues area creeks and streams should largely remain contained,
with MMEFS indicating not much flooding threat.

This dry slot will work its way into the Genesee Valley before
collapsing midday as wrap around moisture associated with the upper
level low reenters the picture with another round of west to east
bound rain showers. Moderate rains will end midday to our east as
convergence ahead of a LLJ slides eastward.

In addition to the rain, wind will also be a problem for Sunday.
Initially a downslope flow over the Chautauqua Ridge may yield a few
southeast wind gusts to around 45 mph before a cold front passes and
winds veer to southwesterly. To our east a downslope flow off the
Tug Hill will bring gusts to around 45 mph across northern Jefferson
and northern Lewis Counties early Sunday morning.

This southwest wind funneling up Lake Erie will spread across the
northern Niagara Frontier and towards Monroe County with possible
gusts to 50 mph. The 00Z suite of operational models have increased
the LLJ with this system over previous runs...in part due to
tropical interactions. Will wait for another run...and draw closer
to the event before hoisting any further wind headlines for Sunday.
For now will mention these gusty winds in the HWO.

A weak area of high pressure will build towards our region Sunday
night and into Monday. Any lingering showers/drizzle Sunday night
will end. Moisture will remain in the lower levels such that as
ridging aloft produces a subsidence inversion...mostly cloudy skies
will remain across the region Monday. It will not be until later
Monday afternoon and evening that some brief clearing occurs. Fair
weather with clearing skies is likely for Monday night.

Temperatures will warm briefly into the mid 60s across the Lake
Plain for Sunday before a cold front sweeps through and brings a
cooler airmass into our region. Clouds Sunday night will keep
temperatures in the mid to upper 40s...while some clearing Monday
night will allow temperatures to drop back into the low to mid 40s.
Some patches of fog will be possible Monday night with the recent
rains saturating the ground.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Latest medium range guidance continues to struggle over far south
and east the cold air settling into the Plains will make it into the
Great Lakes, and if it interact with the southern stream energy
working up toward the region.

Early on in the period, there seems to be better agreement with
ridging developing into the area Tuesday which will provide fair
weather, before forecast confidence greatly deteriorates
through the mid to late week period.

The 00Z Euro is similar to the 00Z Canadian suggesting a farther
west and slower solution to the mid to late week storm system. These
solutions hang back the upper level energy longer the GFS.
The Euro is also stronger with the associated low than the
other models. With so much uncertainty, at this stage of the
forecast will lean toward continuity which has followed the
slower Euro more closely. But with that said, there is plenty
of uncertainty in the Wednesday through Friday time frame with
several different outcomes that could occur, including lake
effect precipitation and snow.

.AVIATION /12Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Lingering low clouds and fog will dissipate quite rapidly
through mid-morning with mainly VFR flight conditions expected
by 14Z. Clouds will scatter out this morning as high pressure
and drier air builds in. This will result in VFR flight
conditions through 21Z. Rain will spread from SW-NE along the
nose of a 60 kt LLJ and this will lower ceilings and visibility.
Steady rain will last through the night. This will result in
MVFR flight conditions at most locations and possibly IFR
conditions at KJHW. This also will bring the potential for wind
shear late tonight.

Outlook...

Sunday...Conditions improving to VFR with rain diminishing.
Windy.
Monday and Tuesday...VFR.
Wednesday...VFR/MVFR with a chance of rain.

.MARINE...
A weak pressure gradient will remain in place across the area
through most of the day today, along with correspondingly minimal
winds and waves. Strong low pressure will then track up the
Mississippi Valley today and across the Eastern Great Lakes tonight.
This system will gradually weaken on Sunday, but will produce gusty
south winds across Lake Erie tonight, followed by a brisk
southwesterly flow behind a cold front on Sunday. Issued Small Craft
Advisories for Lake Erie for the southerly winds, and a Gale Watch
for the post-frontal winds on Sunday. Other headlines will likely be
needed behind the system on Sunday.

High pressure will gradually ridge into the region Sunday night with
minimal winds and waves by Monday.
