.SYNOPSIS...
Cold and quiet weather continues through the afternoon and into
the overnight hours. Scattered snow showers will move through
the North Country potentially impacting the Friday morning
commute before a significant winter storm begins to affect the
North Country over the weekend. Storm total snowfall of greater
than a foot will be possible across much of central and southern
Vermont. Behind the winter storm bitterly cold temperatures and
wind chills will return.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 1 PM THIS AFTERNOON/...
As of 944 PM EST Thursday...Only change with the latest update
to was to adjust the temperature trends across the North
Country. More and more locations are beginning to show a light
southerly winds with temperatures across the Champlain Valley
and southern Vermont already beginning to warm. Other locations
will take a few more hours to switch to the south but it appears
the low temperatures have likely been reached with cloud cover
now fully entrenched across the region.

Previous Discussion...Its been a calm and quiet day today
under mostly clear skies. We are starting to see some high
clouds filtering in aloft and they will continue to build in
and thicken through the overnight hours as a weak trough digs
through the North Country. The surface low associated with the
trough will bring some scattered snow showers to the region
with a dusting to 3 inches possible.

Temperatures will start to fall in the evening hours but
southerly flow starts ramping up and temps will warm through the
night so our overnight lows should be set shortly after sunset.
Temps keep warming into the afternoon Friday topping out in the
upper 20s to near freezing. As the surface low passes to our
east moderately cold air pushes back into the region with single
digits below zero expected Friday night ahead of the more
significant system expected over the weekend.

.SHORT TERM /1 PM THIS AFTERNOON THROUGH SUNDAY/...
As of 343 PM EST Thursday...Forecast remains on track for
significant snow and blowing/drifting snow for the Saturday
night through Sunday time frame. Winter Storm Watches remain in
effect, but upgrades to Winter Storm Warnings certainly
possible on the midnight shift tonight. Worst travel conditions
expected Saturday night through Sunday morning with 1-2"/hr
snowfall rates possible.

The strong mid-upper tropospheric trough moving onshore across
CA this afternoon will translate eastward, reaching the mid to
lower Mississippi Valley by Saturday morning. Synoptic system
will deepen rapidly from there, as it interacts with strong
low-level baroclinic zone across the Ohio Valley into the
Northeast. Likewise, low-level trajectories from the central and
western Gulf of Mexico will yield significant moisture advection
northward into our region toward Saturday evening. Surface low
is forecast to track eastward off the NJ coast by Sunday
morning, with best QG ascent occurring during Saturday night.
Appears there is potential for narrowly banded precipitation
somewhere across central New England into southern Vermont,
which could enhance overall UVV and snowfall rates. Thermal
profiles will be quite cold, especially across the north, where
deep saturated dendrite growth layers are expected based on
NAM/GFS soundings. Further south, profiles are a bit warmer in
s-central VT, and may result in better rimed snow crystals.
Expecting an all snow event, but SLRs will range from 13-15:1
across s-central VT, to 17-20:1 across the far north. May also
need to watch for low-level sublimation processes across the
far north, with near-sfc arctic air mass in place, which could
cut down on snowfall amts, especially across the St. Lawrence
Valley. Based on current indications, total snow accumulations
of 4 to 8 inches are possible across the St. Lawrence Valley, 8
to 15 inches across the Adirondacks, Champlain Valley, and
central into northeastern Vermont, and 12 to 18 inches across
south- central Vermont, with best potential for mesoscale
banding from 12Z NWP suite. Localized snow totals around 20"
possible in the higher summits of the southern Greens. Most of
the impacts with this system will be travel related...any power
outages should be quite isolated given overall low density
snowfall and 2-m temps far below freezing. Again, worst travel
conditions will be late Saturday night thru Sunday morning.

North winds increase during the daylight hours Sunday, with
continued periods of snow or snow showers, and increased blowing
and drifting snow. North winds of 15-25 mph, with gusts to 35
mph in the Champlain Valley are possible, resulting in low
visibility in blowing snow at times. Temperatures will be quite
cold, generally in the single digits above zero, to lower teens
across Rutland/Windsor counties.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/...
As of 343 PM EST Thursday...Bitterly cold wind chills will be
the main weather story Sunday night through Monday night as
departing low pressure deepens across the Canadian Maritimes,
and strong northerly gradient flow continues. North winds of
15-25 mph continue Sunday night through Monday, and may yield
wind chills in the 20 to 30 below range, and locally as low as
35 below across the Northern Adirondacks. Appears 850mb temps
will be in the -21C to -24C range during the day Monday, with
highs only in the single digits areawide, and locally below zero
across portions of northern New York. May eventually need Wind
Chill Advisories/Warnings for the Sunday night through Monday
night time period. Continued snow showers are possible,
especially across the northern mountains.

As high pressure builds in during Monday night, should see
diminishing winds and partial clearing. With the fresh snowpack,
excellent radiative cooling conditions are possible. Looking for
lows of -5F to -20F for Monday night. Quiet and cold conditions
are expected for Tuesday.

As high pressure departs to our east, may see a quick
turnaround in temperatures by Wednesday of next week, with south

.AVIATION /06Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Through 06Z Saturday...VFR conditions will continue through the
evening hours before a 1500 to 2500 foot deck overspreads the
North Country. Snow showers are expected to move across the
region through the day on Friday which will create some
localized IFR visibilities at MSS and SLK. Other locations may
see brief periods of IFR/MVFR visibilities with snow showers but
MSS and SLK are the most likely locations to see snow showers
through Friday afternoon. Light and variable winds will shift to
the south over the next few hours with winds increasing to 5 to
12 knots. It looks like ceilings will improve and snow showers
will exit the region after 18Z Friday but lingering MVFR
ceilings will be seen across northern New York and southern
Vermont.
