.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure crest over southern New England today bringing
dry weather, seasonable temperatures and light winds. Tonight
strong low pressure across the Great Lakes will bring a wintry
mix of precipitation across the region that will continue
through Tuesday. Significant icing is likely from the Worcester
Hills into the Berkshires and possibly into portions of northern
Connecticut. Slowly improving conditions during Tuesday as the
coastal low shifts northeast to the Maritimes. Large high
pressure brings dry conditions Wednesday into Thursday. Another
frontal system will push across Thursday night through Friday
night, with another chance for mixed precipitation inland.
Mainly dry and seasonable conditions return to start next
weekend.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...

355 AM Update...

Today ...

Deep layer ridge moves west to east across the region today
providing one more day of dry weather. Morning sunshine will fade
behind increasing mid/high clouds as the day progresses. Not as mild
as yesterday but temps will still manage to climb into the low 40s,
upper 30s high terrain. These values are still about 5 degs above
normal. Ridge of high pressure over the area will provide light
winds. Thus very pleasant by late December standards. Enjoy!

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 PM MONDAY/...

355 AM update ...

*** Widespread sleet/ice pellets and freezing rain (except all rain
south coast of MA/RI) with significant icing Worcester Hills &
Berkshires ***

Overview ...

Classic cold air damming (CAD) setup with robust northern stream jet
across the Maritimes and in its wake 1030+ mb high builds southeast
from Quebec into Atlantic Canada. This will wedge cold air into
southern New England with model soundings indicating core of cold
air located around 3-4kft at about -6C! Shallow cold air likely gets
replenished later Mon into Mon night as frontal wave emerges off the
NJ coast.  This will increase low level northerly ageostrophic flow
across southern New England. The net effect will be for the high
terrain of the Worcester county and the east slopes of the
Berkshires to remain at or below freezing for much of the upcoming
qpf event (1+ inches likely). Thus significant amounts of sleet/ice
pellets and freezing rain likely high terrain of Worcester county
and east slopes of the Berkshires. Therefore we have upgraded these
areas from a watch to a warning based on high confidence for
significant icing (0.50 inch or greater). Given the highest
elevations exist in the Berks will upgrade to an ice storm warning
for highest confidence of ice exceeding 0.50 inches, with Worcester
county more of a combination of sleet and freezing rain, not quite
as impactful as straight freezing rain. Thus Winter Storm Warning
for Worcester county. Risk for isolated power outages as well here
but will hinge on amount of sleet/ice pellets vs freezing rain. More
freezing rain and less sleet/ice pellets = increased threat for
power outages. Thus greatest risk for power outages will be east
slopes of Berks with lower threat Worcester county.

Details ...

Ptype...Sleet/ice pellets and freezing rain overspread most of the
region this evening from west to east, except south coast of MA/RI
where it should be warm enough to support rain. Although Cape Cod may
see a period of sleet. Towards Monday morning warm nose around 800-
750 mb warms to about +6C per model soundings. This should support
sleet/ice pellets transitioning to freezing rain overnight and
toward Monday morning. Then on Monday as warm nose increases to +6C
or so ptype should be mainly freezing rain inland and a chilly rain
elsewhere closer to the coast. Definitely impact to the Monday
morning commute. Precip will be moderate to heavy at times Monday
along with low risk of elevated convection as mid level lapse rates
steepen.

Any snow should be confined to northeast MA especially Essex county
where deeper cold air resides. Although this will be short lived
given impressive warm nose advecting across the region. Model
soundings in northeast MA indicate deep isothermal layer which would
support a period of heavy snow. However it will be a fine line
between heavy snow and sleet. Thus big bust potential here so will
word it as 1-4" of possible snow accumulation.

Rainfall ...

Southern RI into south coast MA ptype will be mainly rain and heavy
at times with storm total rainfall of 1-2 inches possible. Thus poor
drainage flooding likely. By later Monday will see a wind driven
rain along and near the coast with east winds gusting up to 35-40
mph.

Models ...

Given the shallow cold air derived surface temps and ptype from Hi
Res guidance and accounted for evaporative cooling tonight with
onset of precip.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/...

Details...

Monday night through Tuesday night...

The majority of the 12Z model suite remained in good agreement
from the previous runs as well as showed good continuity on the
prolonged winter weather event that will linger into Tuesday.

Most models continued to signal a mix of rain and sleet across
most of northern and eastern areas, except for FZRA across some
of the southern Worcester hills and E slopes of the Berkshires
to start off on Monday, then will gradually change over to rain
along the coast from south of Boston across to SE Mass into RI
and most of N CT from midday through the afternoon.

Still quite a bit of uncertainty on the changeover to rain
across the coastal plain during Monday, along with non-diurnal
temp trends across central and eastern areas with the onshore
flow Monday night, as well as the extent and severity of the
icing across interior areas. The greatest threat for extended
ice accretion will likely occur across the Worcester Hills and E
slopes of the Berkshires, but could see some icing across some
of the lower terrain of central and W Mass into N CT continue
into Tuesday.

The big issue will be the potential of a prolonged period of
freezing rain across the interior, especially across the
Worcester Hills and E slopes of the Berkshires, hence the
extension of the Winter Storm Watch through Tuesday night.

The warm front will remain S of the region as a secondary low
develops off the NJ coast Monday night, then will slowly move
NE toward Cape Cod during Tuesday. With the positions of the
main low over the western Great Lakes along with the second low
S of Long Island, will see a renewal of the cold air damming
well inland which could enhance the ice accretion Monday into
Monday night. This is when the highest QPF is expected, on the
order of 1 to 1.4 inches, highest along S coastal areas. Once
the low moves offshore Tuesday morning, winds back to N-NE
inland, which will bring a precip change to a light mix of
rain/snow before tapering off Tuesday evening.

Winter storm watches remain in effect through 12Z Tuesday for
most of the region, except E coastal areas to the Boston-
Providence corridor and along the S coast. However, with the
precarious thermal structure, PTYPE issues will ensue. There is
still the potential for significant icing with possible tree
damage, power outages and transportation impacts around the
watch area.

Wednesday through Saturday...

Some leftover snow showers may linger on New Years Day across
the E slopes of the Berkshires. Otherwise, should see generally
dry conditions with temperatures running close to seasonal
normals for January 1.

Will see a N-S longitudinal ridge shift steadily E for Wed
night into Thursday with continued dry conditions. May see
another system shift NE out of the southern stream Thu night
through Friday night, bringing another chance for mainly rain,
though there could be a mix with freezing rain across the
interior at the onset Thu night. Lower than average confidence
with this feature, however, as there are timing issues due to
wide model solution spread.

Conditions should improve during Saturday, but clouds could
linger.

Today ... VFR, dry runways and light winds.

Tonight ... VFR to start but IFR by midnight as a wintry mix
overspreads the region from west to east during the evening,
mainly a mix of sleet/ice pellets and freezing rain with just
rain along the south coast of RI/MA. Snow will be confined to
northeast MA where 1-4" is possible before a changeover to sleet
and freezing rain toward 12z Monday.

Monday ... Widespread IFR with LIFR high terrain but possibly
lifting to MVFR later in the day. Mainly freezing rain and sleet/ice
pellets except rain south coast of MA/RI. Significant ice
accumulations especially high terrain. East winds increasing to
30 kt late in the day along the coast.

KBOS Terminal...VFR. Dry runways and light winds today with
possible seabreeze late in the day. Dry weather lingers into
Sunday evening with snow/sleet arriving around midnight.

KBDL Terminal...VFR and dry weather. Sleet/ice pellets and
freezing rain arrives 01-02z.

Outlook /Monday Night through Thursday/...

Monday Night: Mainly IFR, with areas MVFR possible. Strong
winds with local gusts up to 45 kt. RA, PL, FZRA.
