High pressure will gradually build into Southern New England through
Saturday night, with easing northwest winds and a couple of chilly
nights. A storm system will likely bring wintry weather to
southern New England Sunday afternoon into Tuesday. Cooler and
drier conditions then prevail for the midweek period.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM SATURDAY MORNING/...
7 PM Update...
Forecast looks on track. A breezy evening continues across the
coastal plain, with some gusts 25 to near 35 mph, highest over
the Cape/Islands. Wind gusts 20-25 mph remain possible across
the interior, especially over the high terrain. Have made minor
adjustments to reflect latest trends.
4 PM Discussion follows...
Coastal low over the Canadian Maritimes continues to pull away
from the region with a surface ridge of high pressure across
western New York into the north-central Appalachians. This is
contributing to blustery conditions late this afternoon across
the region, with 10- 20 mph winds with gusts ranging from 25-35
mph, highest towards eastern MA and Cape Cod/Islands. Conditions
through tonight should remain generally steady-state.
Winds/wind gusts may slacken slightly but it will still continue
to be pretty breezy, along with a few high clouds on mid/upper-
level NW winds interspersed at times. We should have at least
good radiational cooling, but not entirely optimal with the
continued northerly winds and the high clouds. Showed lows in
the upper teens to low-mid 20s, with upper 20s South Coast to
near freezing towards Cape Cod where winds should continue to be
the strongest.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM SATURDAY MORNING THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
Saturday:
High pressure will continue to ridge into the region into Saturday,
with cold/dry advection continuing. Though we're still looking at
abundant sunshine, cold advection (850 mb temps falling to around -5
to -8C) will significantly offset diurnal warming. Highs on Saturday
project a little colder than today (Friday), with most areas only
getting into the 30s, though a few spots along the coast and on
Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket could reach 40. Northwest winds will
continue to decrease as gradient relaxes, with around 10-15 mph in
the interior into the MA coastal plain, and around 15-20 mph out on
the Cape. Gusts to 30 mph still possible towards the Outer Cape and
Nantucket but should be topping out around 20 mph or less elsewhere.
Saturday Night:
High pressure over southern Quebec settles over northern New England
through the overnight hours. Easing northerly winds, an
exceedingly dry air mass (dewpoints in the single digits in
interior southern New England to mid teens toward the
coastlines) and light northerly winds will set the stage for
near-optimal radiational cooling. Utilized a heavy dose of MOS-
based guidance for low temperatures which are in the teens for
most locations except for low 20s along the coasts of MA/RI and
mid-upper 20s out on the Cape. Low to mid teens wet bulb temps
by daybreak will help to lock in the colder air and set the
stage preceding the wintry weather event.

Sunday through Monday night...
Continued concern that a significant and long duration winter storm
impacts southern New England during Sunday into Tuesday. There is
still uncertainty on the exact track and strength of the storm, as
well as the extent of wintry precipitation/precipitation types. Of
particular concern is the potential for onshore flow over the
comparatively warm ocean waters producing a rain/snow line over
the eastern portion of our area.
All will depend on the evolution of a low pressure system
emerging/strengthening in the lee of the Rockies during Fri
night/Sat, tracking into the Great Lakes Region on Sun. During
Sunday a warm front approaches southern New England from the W.
Meanwhile a secondary low develops along the front along the Mid-
Atlantic Coast, which tracks NE and becomes our primary
precipitation-maker. The overrunning setup brings a steady
saturation of the airmass aloft during Sunday morning, with
increasing/lowering clouds and virga initially. Surface dewpoints
early Sunday morning expected to be in the single digits over the
interior. Thus daytime highs will be tempered by wet bulbing.
However by afternoon onset of wintry precipitation is likely, and
due to the wet-bulbing should start out as snow for most. Highs
generally in the upper 20s to mid 30s for much of the area, 35-40 S
RI/SE MA and the Cape/Islands.
For Sunday night the coastal low takes over but may make little
eastward progression as the mid level trough still hangs back over
the Great Lakes Region. During Monday the coastal low may remain
near/SE of our area as the system becomes vertically stacked. The
system should finally move NE of our area Monday night into Tue. So
to sum up we're looking at the potential for a long duration wintry
precipitation event, predominantly snow for the northern interior,
but potential for a mix of precip over the course of the event.
In collaboration with surrounding WFOs, have opted to go with a
Winter Storm Watch for much of interior SNE as well as northeast MA
including Suffolk/Norfolk Counties, for accumulating snowfall and
sleet. Portions of the area may also see some freezing rain, with
models showing a period of time during Sunday night into Monday
morning where drying aloft may limit ice nuclei, allowing for some
ice accretion. Right now best chances of this happening appear to be
over north central CT into northern RI, with ice accretion up to 0.2
inch.
Along with precipitation, the strength of the low is expected to
produce some gusty winds, especially Sunday night into Monday. With
a decent LLJ we may see winds gusting 20-25 mph, 30-35 mph or more
along the coast if we can mix down. That would lead us to keep an
eye on potential for coastal flooding along the east coast given the
trajectory of the winds. Fortunately, astronomical tides are quite
low which would limit any flooding potential. With wave heights of
10-15 ft we would need near 2 ft of storm surge for the chance of
minor flooding, which at the moment seems unlikely.
Tuesday through Thursday...
Snow is expected to be tapering off by 12Z Tuesday, as the low
finally tracks NE of our area into the Maritimes. Expecting a period
of drier weather, with high pressure moving into the area.
By 12Z Tuesday the last of the snow should be tapering off as the
low exits into the Maritimes, ushered out by brief surface high
pressure/mid level ridging. CAA on the backside of the system will
bring colder temperatures than Monday night, which may be enhanced
by any fresh snowfall.
Completely dry weather may be short lived as the ridge moves east
Wednesday morning and shortwave crosses the region. This could
generate another low pressure but models indicating it may generate
further offshore, so at this time keeping to slight chance/low
chance pops. Looking mainly at highs in the 30s and 40s, and lows in
the 20s.
