.SYNOPSIS...

A significant winter storm will impact the region Saturday evening
into Sunday afternoon with heavy snow, some ice, and rain.  Arctic
air follows this system into early next week. Another weather system
may bring rain and snow next Wednesday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM SATURDAY MORNING/...

3 PM Update...

Mostly cloudy skies linger thru the remainder of this afternoon,
with a few flurries possible across far northern and western MA.
Otherwise, a low pressure center tracking well N of our area,
drags a weak cold front thru SNE during this evening. Moisture
in our area is decreasing as this feature approaches, so mainly
expecting a wind shift to the NW. Decreasing moisture under the
NW flow should allow for a period of clearing skies. However mid
and high deck clouds well in advance of our next system could
be streaming our way towards daybreak Saturday.

The N/NW winds bring CAA and temperatures dipping into the teens and
low 20s, except 25 to 30 along the Cape/Islands and immediate south
coastal MA/RI. Over the far interior, we have a chance of seeing a
few spots dip into the single digits in the far interior late
tonight.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM SATURDAY MORNING THROUGH 6 PM SATURDAY/...

Saturday we start off with surface ridging from high pressure over
southern Quebec. Then we see an increase in mid and upper level
moisture well ahead of a large storm system, which will be tracking
northeastward thru the lower Ohio River Valley.

As winds shift to the NNE during Sat afternoon, there is the
possibility for some ocean effect snow showers. This should mainly
be south of Boston into the upper Cape, but there is a slight
chance of a snow shower over Cape Ann.

Otherwise, looking to the large storm system approaching from
the SW...light snow is possible late in the afternoon as the
column saturates. Have slight chance to low chance pops for mid
Sat afternoon, increasing chances from W to E. High temps range
from the mid 20s to low 30s across much of the area.

&&

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/...

* Significant Winter Storm Sat night into Sun afternoon
* Flash Freeze Eastern MA/RI Sunday: Very Hazardous Travel

A significant winter storm is in the cards for the region Saturday
evening into Sunday afternoon.  The overall trend of the 12z models
has been a more amplified/milder solution...so will be trimming back
snow accumulations just a bit.  At the same time...given that we are
36+ hours out from the event further adjustments may occur so do not
want to make drastic changes.  We will break things down more below.

1) Snow/Ice Accumulations And Uncertainty:

Approaching low pressure will induce a strengthening southerly low
level jet Saturday evening.  As this strong low level jet overrides
the cold dome at the surface...the forcing for ascent will rapidly
increase.  While some scattered light snow showers are possible into
early evening...the accumulating snow will overspread the region
between 5 and 9 pm Saturday evening.  Despite the overall milder
trend of the guidance...it still appears that there will be a pretty
good front end thump of snow with good forcing over the cold dome.
Snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour are possible.  It appears
that most of the region will be cold enough for snow through about
midnight.  However...the surface low tracking west will allow for
significant mid level warmth to rapidly overspread most of the
region between midnight and 6 am.

We do expect the Boston to Providence corridor to flip to plain rain
by daybreak Sunday, given warming mid levels and onshore flow.
Further inland...across interior MA/CT and perhaps northwest RI not
ready to buy the warmer boundary layer temps advertised by some of
the guidance.  Given the amount of low level cold air, it might be
quite difficult for those locations to get above freezing.
Therefore...ptype will change to sleet along with some freezing
rain.  Mostly expecting light ice accretion with limited duration
and potentially a lot of sleet.  However...there may be a narrow
area somewhere across CT, interior southern MA, and possibly
northwest RI where ice accretion may reach or exceed one quarter of
an inch.  If this occurs, it would be in a narrow location but
problematic because of the scattered power outage threat and
bitterly cold air to follow Sunday night.

Overall...snow accumulations of 3 to 7 inches appear reasonable
south of the MA turnpike with 7 to 12 inches north of the Pike. The
threat for 12 to 15 inches of snow will likely be confined to areas
near the NH border.  Based on these latest accumulations...have
opted to upgrade to a Winter Storm Warning north of the MA Turnpike.
Where criteria is more marginal have opted to hold onto the Winter
Storm Watch and defer to the next shift.

2) Flash Freeze Sunday Across Eastern MA/RI: Very Hazardous Travel

While the more amplified 12z solutions have given greater confidence
that much of eastern MA/RI will see temperatures above freezing by
daybreak Sunday.  In fact...heavy rain will probably be falling and
snow clogged drains may result in some street flooding.  However, a
big concern turns to a flash freeze that will occur roughly between
8 am and 2 pm.  Temperatures above freezing, should quickly plunge
well down into the 20s with even some teens possible. Ptype...will
quickly transition to freezing rain/sleet, which should end as a
period of snow Sunday afternoon.  While additional light
accumulations are possible...the greatest concern is a flash freeze
as rain will have washed off earlier road treatments.  That coupled
with rapidly falling temperatures may result in roads quickly
becoming very icy.

4) Main Impacts/Concerns:

Exact snow accumulations remain uncertain, but greatest snow amounts
will be north of the MA turnpike. Further adjustments certainly may
occur given we are 36+ hours out in the model guidance world.
However...we want to focus more on impacts than specific amounts.
This includes the potential for a narrow/localized area of a quarter
plus of ice accretion.  The main threat for this appears to be
across CT, interior southern MA, and northwest RI.  If this were to
occur it would be rather localized, the potential for scattered
power outages  would be possible.  Also, a rapid temperatures plunge
between 8 am and 2 pm Sunday across eastern MA/RI will result in a
flash freeze and very hazardous travel.

Sunday night-Monday...

Weekend storm departs through the Maritimes Sunday night. High
pressure over the Great Lakes and the storm in the Maritimes will
generate a strong pressure gradient over New England, maintaining
the cold advection and resulting mixing over our area. Strong north
winds will turn from the northwest overnight and continue to draw
arctic air into Southern New England.

Temperatures upstream in the Nrn Plains started the past couple of
days in the single numbers with dew points below zero. Expect Sunday
evening temps in the teens, but falling into the single numbers by
morning. A few spots in Western and Central Mass and Northern CT.
Mixing from 950 mb suggests Monday max sfc temps near 10F. We used 5-
15F inland and around 20F on the Cape and Islands.

Tuesday through Thursday...

High pressure moves over New England Tuesday. Winds diminish with
the high, which will generate radiational cooling Tuesday morning.
The clear skies and light wind will allow min temps in the single
numbers and below zero.

Low pressure that moves onshore on the Pacific coast this weekend
splits into two parts. One moves across Canada and the northern USA
will move across the country next week, bringing rain or snow to
Southern New England Wednesday.  The second part of the system dives
southeast to the Gulf of Mexico by Wednesday, then moving up the
East Coast Thursday or Friday maintaining a chance of rain or snow.

.AVIATION /20Z FRIDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Forecaster Confidence Levels...

Low - less than 30 percent.
Moderate - 30 to 60 percent.
High - greater than 60 percent.

Short Term /through Saturday/...High confidence.

Thru 00Z this evening...VFR along most of eastern MA/RI, except
along south coastal RI and southeast MA where some MVFR to localized
IFR CIGs linger. A mix of low VFR to MVFR CIGS across the interior,
with some patchy -SN possible in far western MA thru 21Z.

Tonight...Becoming VFR early. Winds shift from SW/W to N/NW. Could
become breezy along east coastal MA/Cape/Islands w/NW winds gusting
to 20 kts.

Saturday...Mainly VFR, with local MVFR CIGs possible late in the day
especially across SE MA/Cape/Islands. Some ocean effect -SHSN
possible along the south shore of MA in the afternoon. MVFR
CIGs/VSBYs in -SN approaches BAF/BDL towards 00Z.

KBOS Terminal...High confidence in TAF. There is a chance for a
period of MVFR CIGs thru 22Z.

KBDL Terminal...High confidence in TAF.

low level jet.

By the time of high tide Sunday along the east coast (roughly
10 AM local), surge should be approaching 2.0 ft, which
combined with offshore wave action around 15 ft should lead to
localized minor to moderate E coastal flooding given a high
astronomical base tide in Boston around 11.6 ft MLLW. Given the
high astro tide...opted to issue a Coastal Flood Warning for
eastern MA and an advisory of the south coast, Cape, and
Islands.
