.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure over northern NY state redevelops into a powerful
storm along the Maine coast later this morning, resulting in
rain showers ending before sunrise across southern New England,
then giving way to a blustery cold day. This powerful storm
lingers over the Maritimes yielding blustery and cold conditions
continuing Thu and Fri. Strong high pressure from Canada builds
south into New England this weekend, providing continued dry
conditions with diminishing winds.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
4 AM Update...
Vigorous short wave moving across eastern NY as of this writing
with its warm conveyor belt of showers sweeping thru RI and
central-eastern MA, lifting rapidly northeast. Earlier embedded
thunder within this band has fizzled but nevertheless some
heavier embedded rainfall.
Ptype...
mainly rain but still holding onto some shallow cold air across
northern Worcester and adjacent areas. Thus some freezing rain
and icy surfaces possible in this region until winds shift to
the WNW around 12z and ushers in much drier air. Therefore will
continue the Winter Weather Advisory until 12z/7am. After 12z
today drying trend will develop except across northern and
western MA where comma-head snows will linger until about 15z
before lifting into central-northern New England. Also, upslope
snows will impact western MA so will continue Winter Weather
Advisory for northwest Franklin county where several inches of
snow is possible before snow bands erode on downwind side on
east slopes.
Dense Fog...
Also, abundant low level moisture trapped beneath inversion
continues to result in areas of dense fog across RI and
eastern-central MA. Vsbys will improve toward 12z once wind
shift to the WNW and ushers in much drier air.
Strong Winds...
Rapidly deepening low along the ME coast deepens about 10 mb in
6 hrs to 983 mb my 18z today. This will result in a modest pres
rise-fall couplet moving thru the area later this morning and
early afternoon which will enhance the local wind field.
Furthermore with 1040 mb high advecting into the High Plains
results in a pres gradient of 57 mb (1040 mb - 983 mb) from the
Great Lakes into the northeast. This pres gradient is typically
strong enough to support wind gusts up to 45 mph. In addition, model
soundings support gusts up to 45 mph and WNW winds typically
overperform likely due to downslope component. Nonetheless will
issue a wind advisory for the entire region which will translate
to areas of wind damage likely.
Temperatures...
Core of cold air doesn't arrive until Thu so temps running above
normal with highs 40-45 except mid to upper 30s well inland.
However it will feel colder given the blustery WNW winds up to
45 mph.

Core of cold air over the region with 850 mb temps down to -12C
across the region, limiting highs to only the 30s with upper 20s
in the high terrain. Blustery WNW winds will yield wind chills
in the teens and 20s. Scattered snow showers/flurries possible
in the morning as mid level moisture combines with cyclonic flow
aloft.

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Overview...
Somewhat high amplitude mid level steering pattern remains
across North America as seen on the 00Z model suite. Cutoff H5
low spins across downeast Maine into the Maritimes Thursday
night, with a frigid N-NW flow in place on the backside of this
low. Core of coldest arctic air remains across central Canada,
but a piece will work SE across the region late Thu night and
Friday. So, should see coldest sensible temps around Friday down
to around 10 degrees below seasonal normals. Cold temps will
continue through the weekend, then may start to moderate as the
trough tends to flatten out.
Still monitoring developing low pressure across the SE U.S.
this weekend and whether it will affect the region around the
Sunday/Sunday night timeframe. Based on the solutions from the
00Z model suite, looks like the northern and southern streams
will not phase this low develops. Surface high shifts SE out of
Ontario and Hudson Bay into northern New England. This will be
enough to shunt the low and its precipitation shield well S of
the region. Might see the far northern fringe of the snow try to
clip immediate S coastal areas late Sat night into Sun evening.
As high amplitude ridge remains across the western U.S., will
continue to see weak, fast moving short waves in the broad long
wave trough/downstream mid level flow across the northeast into
early next week. At this point, will see mainly cold, dry
conditions during this timeframe. May see a dry backdoor front
try to push across around Tue/Tue night with another shot of
colder air, but temps look to be closer to normal.
Details...
Thursday night through Saturday...
Will continue to see dry, cold weather pattern across the
northeast U.S. during this timeframe. Strong surface low, with
pressures down to around 980-985 hPa, spinning across the
Maritimes, will see cold air from the Arctic Circle work across
the region. H85 temps drop to
-9C to -14C late Thu night, bottoming out around -15C to -17C Fri
afternoon. So, will see very cold temps in place with highs on Fri
only in the mid-upper teens across the higher terrain, ranging to
the mid-upper 20s along the coast. However, with blustery NW winds
gusting up to around 25 kt especially across the higher terrain and
along the immediate coast, it will feel much colder with wind chill
values of zero well inland to the mid-upper teens across the coastal
plain. Readings forecast to bottom out in the single digits and
teens across the region Fri night.
Dry conditions continue as high pressure slowly pushes E out of
the Great Lakes to the Appalachians Saturday. It will remain
cold with readings only a few degrees milder but looks to remain
below freezing during the day. NW winds will diminish except
across outer Cape Cod where gusts up to around 20 kt are
forecast to continue through most of the day.
Mid and high clouds are forecast to push into southern areas
during Saturday afternoon.
Saturday night and Sunday...
00Z models in better agreement in developing low pressure
across the SE U.S. late Sat night and Sun, while high pressure
shifts SE out of Quebec into northern New England by Sun morning.
This high looks to shunt out the moisture from the southern
low, while the steering flow remains mainly east across the
southern stream. So, other than a low threat for a little snow
that might push to the immediate S coast during this timeframe,
were slight CHC POPs are mentioned, should see dry conditions
across the majority of the region.
Temps will continue to run 5 to 10 degrees below normal this
weekend.
Sunday night through Tuesday...
Rather wide model solution spread amongst the suite during this
timeframe, but general agreement in place across the northeast.
Dry conditions should continue Sunday night into Monday as
surface high pres ridge moves across. A dry, weak front works S
Mon night into Tue, reinforcing the cold, dry conditions in
