.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure north of New England will bring dry and cold
weather to our area today and tonight. As low pressure passes
off the Mid Atlantic coast and out to sea, it will turn our
winds from the northeast, creating ocean effect snow showers
across the South Shore and parts of Cape Cod tonight and Monday
morning. Mainly dry weather continues for much of next week
with more seasonable temperatures, but a cold front may bring
some snow or rain showers Friday. A storm may impact the region
sometime next weekend but details are uncertain.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THIS MORNING/...

Coastal low pressure develops off North Carolina and moves
offshore. This will keep the lower clouds and precipitation
south of our area, but mid-level clouds should thicken for a
few hours. High pressure centered in Canada will hold a light
north flow of cold dry air over Southern New England today.
Temperatures at 925 mb around -10C will support max sfc temps of
25-30F.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH 6 PM MONDAY/...

High pressure over Canada and low pressure passing south of the
benchmark will turn our winds from the northeast. The air path
moves over 5-6C sea water with lowest temp below the subsidence
inversion around -11C. This gives a 16-17C temp differential
across the layer with maximum winds of 16-18 kt. Upper trough
supporting the coastal low passes just south of our area
overnight and Monday morning.

This continues to indicate development of ocean-effect clouds
and snow showers in Southeast Mass, with a northeast fetch
favoring the Mass South Shore and especially Eastern Plymouth
County. Snow accumulations in this area will be limited, but
with expected temperatures there could be an inch or two in a
few spots. Passage of the nearby trough may also add some
support for lift, but not sure how much of this will reach into
the boundary layer. Expect a trend to fewer clouds northwest of
I-95.

With passage of the upper shortwave and surface trough, expect
surface winds to turn from the northwest. Any snow showers
should taper off Monday morning.

Min temps should again reach 5 to 15F where skies are mostly
clear, and 15 to 25F in the cloudy southeast. Temperatures aloft
moderate a couple of degrees, so max temps Monday should reach
the upper 20s and lower 30s.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/...

Tuesday and Wednesday...

Ocean storm pulls away Tue with surface ridging building into New
Eng. After a cold start, temps will recover to near seasonable
normals with light winds. Sunshine will give way to some increase in
cloud cover in the afternoon as a band of low/mid level moisture
moves south. Overall, a nice winter day. Then northern stream
shortwave and attending low pres tracking across SE Canada will
deliver a cold front Wed night. Preceding the front, increasing
SW winds develop on Wed will bring milder temps but dry weather
will continue. The front should come through mainly dry Wed
night as moisture will be limited.

Thursday and Friday...

Colder post-frontal airmass on Thu as high pres builds into New Eng.
Expect sunshine and light northerly winds with below normal temps.
On Fri, deepening moisture plume ahead of a cold front will result
in an increasing risk for snow/rain showers. Ptype mostly snow but
southerly flow may warm BL enough for a change to rain near the
coast.

Next weekend...

Lots of uncertainty with potential frontal wave which offers very
low predictability at this time range. Complex pattern evolving and
it will take several days before models can better resolve the
interaction between northern and southern stream energy and possible
outcomes for next weekend. Stay tuned.
