Area Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure should result in dry weather prevailing through
this afternoon before rain showers overspread western
Massachusetts and northern Connecticut by late afternoon/early
evening. Bands of heavy rain showers and a few embedded
thunderstorms may result in localized flooding this evening into
Tuesday morning across the region. A cold frontal passage will
bring a return to dry weather Tuesday afternoon into Wednesday.
Another Low pressure with its associated front will slowly
approach the region Thursday, bringing more showers through
Thursday night. There is also a threat for isolated
thunderstorms with locally heavy rainfall. Dry weather returns
Friday and Saturday as high pressure passes south of the region.
Another front may approach the region late next weekend.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...

1 PM update...

Very little changes to the forecast. Adjusted the timing of the
precip to match up with current guidance. Hi-res models have
slowed down and it looks like precip won't get into N. CT until
closer to 4 PM, and Boston until around 9 PM.

Previous discussion...

High pressure continues eastward away from the region as a low
pressure system moves NNE along the Atlantic coast. Dry conditions
will continue throughout this morning and into the early afternoon,
but with increasing clouds out of the W-SW.

Sea breeze has already moved into Boston and the North Shore, which
will keep the temperatures in the upper 60s to low 70s throughout
the remainder of the day. However, across the interior temperatures
will likely reach near the 80s, especially in the Connecticut
and Merrimack River Valleys.

As the low pressure continues to track along the Atlantic coast
and then over the region this afternoon, heavy rain and
localized flooding will be a concern this evening through
tomorrow morning. Ahead of an approaching warm front, widespread
rain will move into Connecticut around 3pm and the eastern coast
between 7pm and 9pm.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 PM TUESDAY/...
* Heavy rain/localized flood threat this evening into Tue AM

The main concern will be the potential for heavy rain and
localized flooding this evening into Tuesday morning, which we
will discuss more below.

Approaching shortwave/warm front will increase the forcing for
ascent across interior southern New England this afternoon.  The
result will be rain overspreading western MA/CT between 3 and 6 pm
and then eastern MA/RI between 6 and 9 pm this evening.

A low level jet/Pwat plume 2-3+ standard deviations will be
interacting with a warm front and a burst of elevated instability
this evening into the overnight hours.  The result should be bands
of showers with locally heavy rainfall and a few embedded
thunderstorms as the warm front will act as a forcing mechanism for
the LLJ/Pwat plume. There also appears to be the potential for a
secondary band of heavy rainfall toward daybreak into Tuesday
morning ahead of the approaching cold front.

Given the above, we are expecting widespread 0.75 to 1.50" of
rainfall.  However, localized 2-3"+ rainfall amounts are possible
and depicted by some of our models especially the CAMs.  The issue
is where exactly these potentially higher amounts would occur.  Some
data suggests that initially the east slopes of the Berks/Worcester
Hills would be most vulnerable given SSE upslope flow. Other
guidance suggests that portions of RI/SE MA may be vulnerable given
higher MUCape values and enhanced convergence along a secondary low
pressure system.

So in a nutshell...Pwats over 2 inches and strong dynamics/forcing
have us concerned for heavy rain/localized flooding this evening
into Tuesday morning.  Will go ahead and issue a special weather
statement to highlight these concerns. This will give the day
shift a chance to examine the 12z model suite and issue a Flood
Watch if confidence increases in the higher amounts occurring
along with the potential location. Low temperatures will be much
milder then the last few nights...only dropping into the 60 to
65 degree range in most locales.

Tuesday afternoon...

Dry weather expected by Tuesday afternoon in most locations.  In
fact...expect partly to mostly sunny skies to emerge and given the
mild start expect highs to reach well into the 70s to near 80.
Bufkit soundings showing very good mixing, so 25 to 30 mph wind
gusts may develop with a few gusts near 35 mph possible.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Highlights...

* Dry, seasonable conditions expected Tuesday night and
  Wednesday

* Showers with locally heavy rain return Wed night into early
  Fri, isolated thunder from midday Thu into Thu evening

* Should see dry conditions Fri night into Saturday, then
  chance for showers Sunday

Details...

10/00Z guidance is in rather good agreement with the overall
synoptic pattern into Friday. After then, significant
differences arise which make for an uncertain forecast next
weekend.

Tuesday Night into Wednesday...

High pressure general in control of our weather as it moves
east across our region. Near to slightly below normal
temperatures expected.

Wednesday Night into Thursday Night...

In general, a mid level trough amplifies over the central USA
towards mid week. This places southern New England into a
favorable position for moisture advection from the tropics.
Precipitable water values are expected to be 1-2 standard
deviations above normal, but 850 mb moisture flux should be
about 2-3 standard deviations above normal late Thursday into
Thursday night. Will need to monitor this time period for the
possibility of another round of heavy rainfall. Showers should
arrive sometime late Wednesday night into Thursday.

Near to below normal temperatures continue.

Friday through Sunday...

Southern New England should be between a high pressure to the
south and a low pressure moving across eastern Canada.
Uncertainty over which feature will be the dominant one. At
this point, favoring the high pressure moving through the Mid
Atlantic. However, it will only take a subtle shift to make a
significant change to the forecast. This is a low confidence
forecast.

Moderate - 30 to 60 percent.
High - greater than 60 percent.

Short Term /through Tuesday/...

1 PM Update...

Today...High confidence. VFR conditions through early to mid
afternoon. Sea breeze has already settled in at BOS and PVD. MVFR
cigs/vsby should overspread western MA/CT between 21z and 23z
as rain moves into the region.

Tonight into Tuesday morning...Moderate to high confidence.
Widespread low end MVFR to IFR conditions in bands of heavy rain
showers and a few embedded thunderstorms. LLWs may also impact
the southeast New England coast overnight.

Tuesday afternoon...Moderate to high confidence in TAF. Rapid
improvement to mainly VFR by early to mid afternoon Tuesday
behind a cold front. NW wind gusts of 20 to 25 knots with a few
gusts to 30 knots are expected to develop.

KBOS Terminal...High confidence in TAF. Sea breeze in place
through the afternoon, turning SE this evening. Rain moves in
around 02z.

KBDL Terminal...High confidence in TAF.

Today...High confidence. High pressure will continue to move
east of the waters today. The result will be SSE wind gusts of
15 to 20 knots developing by afternoon. Nonetheless, winds/seas
should remain below small craft advisory thresholds.

Tonight...Moderate to high confidence. An increasing low level
jet will result in the potential for 20 to 25 knot southerly
wind gusts overnight. Long southerly fetch may result in 3 to
6 foot seas developing as well. Later shifts may need to
consider the issuance of small craft headlines for some of our
open waters. However, given it is not occurring until late in
the second period will hold off on any headlines for now. Bands
of showers with a few embedded t- storms along with areas of fog
will also reduce vsbys for mariners.

Tuesday...Moderate to high confidence. Bands of showers and a
few embedded thunderstorms should exit most of the waters by
early Tuesday afternoon. Left over marginal small craft seas
will remain possible for some of our open waters. Also, near
shore NW wind gusts of 20 to 30 knots may develop during the
afternoon so additional headlines might need to be considered.

...HEAVY RAIN AND A LOCALIZED FLOOD THREAT EXISTS THIS EVENING
INTO TUESDAY MORNING...

Rain will overspread western Massachusetts and northern
Connecticut between 3 and 6 pm this evening, reaching eastern
Massachusetts and Rhode Island between 6 and 9 pm this evening.

Bands of heavy rain and a few embedded thunderstorms are expected
to impact the region this evening into Tuesday morning. This will
bring the potential for some poor drainage street flooding. In
addition...more significant localized flooding is possible if the
heavy rain remains over the same areas for several hours.

Motorists should be prepared for bands of heavy rainfall and some
poor drainage street flooding this evening into Tuesday morning.

...HEAVY RAINFALL MAY RESULT IN LOCALIZED FLOODING TONIGHT INTO
TUESDAY MORNING...

Periods of heavy showers and embedded thunderstorms will bring
localized heavy rainfall tonight into Tuesday morning. One period
of rain is expected to move through southern New England from
southwest to northeast this evening into the early morning hours,
then another area of locally heavy rainfall will accompany a cold
front Tuesday morning.

Rainfall amounts of 0.50 to 1.50 inches are expected. However,
localized amounts exceeding 2 inches are possible where heavy
showers or thunderstorms move over the same areas. This will
bring the potential for localized urban and poor drainage street
flooding which may impact the Tuesday morning commute. Where the
heaviest rain falls is uncertain and could occur anywhere in
southern New England.

Motorists should be prepared for periods of heavy rainfall and
localized poor drainage street flooding this evening into Tuesday
morning.
