What forecasters said that day
The local office's own words before this small craft advisory went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.
NWS Boston/Norton, MA wrote its last area forecast discussion before this small craft advisory went out at May 18, 3:37 PM EDT, 29 minutes earlier.
Area forecast discussion, May 18, 3:37 PM EDT, 29 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Boston/Norton MA 337 PM EDT Sat May 18 2019 .SYNOPSIS... A warm front will trigger a few showers Sunday morning otherwise a mainly dry day is expected along with mild temperatures. Showers may become more numerous Sunday evening and overnight, especially western MA/CT. Summer-like heat and humidity is then expected Monday along with the threat for scattered thunderstorms ahead of an approaching cold front. High pressure then brings dry and very comfortable conditions Tue and Wed with near seasonable temperatures. Another area of low pressure approaches late week. It may bring a shower as early as Thursday, but more likely for Friday and Saturday. && .NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM SUNDAY MORNING/... Pleasant Spring day underway in southern New England...with dewpoints in the 30s-low 40s and temperatures in the 60s-low 70s. Plenty of sun under surface high pressure and rising heights. As the high moves overhead the pressure gradient has relaxes\d allowing winds to come down and seabreezes to develop along both the south and east coasts. As we go into the evening high pressure lingers and skies will be slow to see increased cloudcover. Given mostly clear skies and light winds, should see good radiational cooling, at least initially. Looking at the bigger picture we see a surface low moving into the Great Lakes region who's warm front begins to lift north through SNE overnight into early Sunday morning. This brings with it increasing cloudcover from northwest to southeast. Any showers should hold off until after 6am. && .SHORT TERM /6 AM SUNDAY MORNING THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/... In addition to increased clouds, Sunday morning will see scattered showers forming from isentropic lift along the warm front. Best chance for seeing rain will be the northern half of the CWA, closer in proximity to the best moisture (PWATs ~1.5") and marginal lift. Clouds stick around, though not especially thick and we should see breaks of sun by the afternoon. Even with less solar insolation we'll be warmer than today, and more humid. Dewpoints in the 30s/40s today will be in the 50s/60s by Sunday afternoon, on southerly wind. At 850mb, temps increase by ~10C in 24 hours, and at the surface we can expect temps to reach well into the 70s. Along the south coast cooler onshore flow will keep temps in the upper 50s/60s. Winds also pick up Sunday to 10-15 mph. How gusty we get will depend on how much sun breaks out to better mix down the 925mb LLJ, but currently thinking gusts 20-25 mph are likely. After the initial round of scattered morning showers, another round of showers/thunderstorms approaches by afternoon. The SPC currently has our neighbors to the west in NY/PA under a slight risk of severe thunderstorms, with only a marginal risk for western MA/CT. This is due to the placement of best instability and forcing over NY/PA. Looking west of our forecast area, 0-6km bulk shear is marginal (35- 40 kts), but ample instability is in place (MUCAPE 1500-2000 J/kg) for some severe storm potential. The mid level ridge over us will help keep things suppressed in SNE, and as showers approach our area around sunset, both shear and instability will sharply decrease, more like several hundred j/kg CAPE...enough to see some overnight thunderstorms but not expecting anything severe. Best chance for seeing some of these showers will be western/central MA and CT, with decreasing probability to the east. There is potential for some locally heavy downpours overnight, given a plume of PWATs 1.75-2.00", 2+ SD above average. Well into the warm sector, lows will be mild, in the 50s and 60s or ~10F above average. && .LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/... Big Picture... The upper pattern for most of the week shows a ridge over the Eastern USA and a trough/closed low over the Western USA. One shortwave moving through this general flow crosses New England Monday-Tuesday. Another shortwave moves south-to-north through the Plains Tuesday. A third shortwave ejects from the Southwest USA late in the week and may reach Southern New England Friday-Saturday. A brief cooldown is possible Tuesday as the first shortwave moves past. After that, contour heights and isotherms are forecast to be above normal through next weekend. Model output is similar through Thursday, then shows model-to-model differences late week. Concerns... Monday... Surface low pressure moves from the Great Lakes across Eastern Canada. This puts Southern New England in the warm sector of this system with southwest winds drawing warm air over the region. Winds of 35-40 kt in the mixed layer should support gusts of 25-30 kt at the surface. The warm air will be most pronounced in the CT Valley. In RI and Southeast Mass the southwest wind will be buffered over the ocean before moving ashore, keeping temperatures a few degrees less warm. Mixing will be shallow, but low-level temperatures will be equivalent to 12C at 850 mb. So expect low-mid 80s in the interior. As the low passes to our north, it will swing a cold front through Southern New England during the evening and early night. Convective indices show good instability in the warm sector with totals 48-50 and LI -3 to -5 in the interior. CAPE in Western/Central MA and Northern CT reaches 1500 J/Kg. Winds at 850 mb 35-40 kt, winds at 500 mb 50-60 kt. Helicity in 0-3 KM layer near 200. Precipitable water values near 1.5 inches and deep moisture through much of the column. But the ECMWF is less impressive with the moisture...and both ECMWF and GFS show drying aloft after 18Z. All of this suggests the potential for strong convection Monday, but also potential roadblocks that will need to be monitored. Convection will also be limited in areas where windflow is off the ocean...a normal spring concern. Tuesday-Wednesday... Some lingering clouds Tuesday, especially in the Merrimack Valley. Northwest winds in the mixed layer at 35-40 kt...much of this will mix to the surface in gusts Tuesday. We used the NBM grids for wind gusts. But high pressure surface and aloft are building in with increasing subsidence, so this should be a dry period with seasonable temperatures. Temps aloft 4-6C should support max temps 60s to near 70. Thursday to Saturday... Models start to diverge in this period, so confidence is less. Cloud- level moisture increases during the period as the third shortwave noted above moves toward our area. Moisture is spotty Thursday, so confidence in showers is low that day. Better moisture Friday- Saturday with the shortwave driving a cold front through the region on Saturday. We will mention chance pops for those two days. As noted above...expect a trend to warmer-than-normal temperatures. && .AVIATION /20Z SATURDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/... Forecaster Confidence Levels... Low - less than 30 percent. Moderate - 30 to 60 percent. High - greater than 60 percent. Short Term /through Sunday Night/... 18z update Today...High confidence. VFR conditions. Localized sea breezes this afternoon along some coastal locations as pressure gradient weakens. Tonight and Sunday...High confidence. Mid level clouds increase after midnight. A few passing showers are possible Sunday morning. Best chance is in northern MA. Light winds tonight will becoming southwest on Sunday with some 20 to 25 knot gusts developing by mid to late afternoon. KBOS Terminal...High confidence in TAF. KBDL Terminal...High confidence in TAF. Outlook /Monday through Thursday/... Monday: Mainly VFR, with local MVFR possible. Windy with gusts up to 30 kt. Chance SHRA, slight chance TSRA. Monday Night: VFR. Windy with local gusts up to 30 kt. Slight chance SHRA. Tuesday: VFR. Windy with gusts up to 30 kt. Tuesday Night through Wednesday: VFR. Breezy. Wednesday Night through Thursday: VFR. && .MARINE... Forecaster Confidence Levels... Low - less than 30 percent. Moderate - 30 to 60 percent. High - greater than 60 percent. Short Term /through Sunday Night/... Today...High confidence. Winds should shift to a southerly component by this evening. Seas 2-3 ft. Tonight...High confidence. High pressure in control will keep winds/seas below small craft advisory thresholds. Sunday...Moderate to high confidence. High pressure moving off the coast will allow a southwest low level jet to develop. Southwest wind gusts of 20 to 25 knots are anticipated Sunday afternoon. Seas 3-5 ft. Sunday night...southerly winds remain gusty, 20-25 kts. Seas 3-5 ft. Scattered rain showers. Outlook /Monday through Thursday/... Monday: Moderate risk for Small Craft Advisory winds with gusts up to 30 kt. Seas up to 5 ft. Chance of rain showers, slight chance of thunderstorms. Local visibility 1 to 3 nm. Monday Night: Low risk for Small Craft Advisory winds with gusts up to 30 kt. Local rough seas. Chance of rain showers, slight chance of thunderstorms. Tuesday: Low risk for Small Craft Advisory winds with gusts up to 25 kt. Local rough seas. Tuesday Night: Winds less than 25 kt. Areas of seas approaching 5 ft. Wednesday: Winds less than 25 kt. Seas locally approaching 5 ft. Wednesday Night through Thursday: Winds less than 25 kt. && .TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
