Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Boston/Norton MA 1037 PM EDT Mon Sep 9 2019 .SYNOPSIS... Dry and pleasant weather continues through Tuesday. A few brief showers late Tuesday night into early Wednesday morning mainly across northern MA. This will be followed by warmer weather Wednesday afternoon and Thursday with perhaps a few showers and isolated thunderstorms, but a washout is not expected. Dry and cooler weather follows Friday before a return to above normal temperatures next weekend. Another cold front may bring scattered showers late Saturday into early Sunday. && .NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM TUESDAY MORNING/... 1010 PM Update... Dry conditions continue across the region late this evening. Surface observations and satellite imagery showing broken to overcast skies across most areas except the immediate S coast and the islands at 02Z. Visibility is excellent at this point, but noting T/Td spreads lowering to 3 degrees or less across portions of RI and SE Mass with light/variable or calm winds. Will continue to monitor for fog development around or after 04Z with the light or calm winds in place. Have updated to bring conditions current. Previous Discussion... May see some low clouds/fog pop up in the previously mentioned locations. Struggle in forecasting areal extent and magnitude of the two. Probabilistic trends (i.e., HREF) and forecaster techniques (cross-over thresholds), there's potential in and around the MA/CT/RI tri-state region as well as E/SE interior MA as moisture becomes trapped beneath a dry-inversion undercutting which is higher dewpoint air leftover by onshore sea- breeze flow during the day. Mostly clear conditions, light winds, radiational cooling. But complications by the possibility of low- mid level scattered to broken cloud decks. Plus with persistence there weren't many impacts after clouds cleared into the early morning hours albeit the CT River Valley. Hint at scattered to broken low ceilings in and around E/SE interior MA towards the Tolland Hills where higher dewpoint air resides, in and around the low to mid 50s, similar to forecast overnight lows. Elsewhere, lows in the upper 40s to low 50s albeit warmer along the shore. Light winds, land breezes along the shores. Confidence lower with dense fog. Could see some impacts in typically prone areas (i.e., Norwood Airport). && .SHORT TERM /6 AM TUESDAY MORNING THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/... Tuesday... Another pleasant, dry day, mild. If any low clouds and/or fog they should erode in the morning, lingering as late as 8-9a. Heights rising through the column preceding a W CONUS H5 trof against a Greenland polar low. Maritime jet nudged N through overall flat flow, warm advection preceding along a surface reflection warm front. Dry passage with H85 temperatures rising up around +10C, anticipating scattered to broken cloud decks with highs warming up around the low to mid 70s as mixing is more shallow, up around H9. Highs closer to seasonable-levels. Dry forecast. Overall light winds. Sea-breezes along the coast. Tuesday night... Chance showers N MA. A dip in the flat flow as Pacific-origin energy stretches eastward. The surface cold front reflection sagging slightly S into N New England with accompanying synoptic ascent with lift beneath. Some of those lifting elements into N MA with orographic support, perhaps some instability given lapse rate profiles, there's the chance of showers. Yet not entirely confident, lot of dry air. Should be drier S, scattered cloud decks. Light outcomes if anything, nuisance, not a washout. && .LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY/... Highlights... * Warmer Wed into Thu * Scattered showers and thunderstorms Wed, showers linger into Thu * Cooler and dry Friday * Warmer temps for the weekend with showers on Saturday Details... Wednesday and Thursday... A large low pressure system moving through New England on Wednesday first brings warm, moist air back into southern New England for our warmest day of the week. Return flow at the surface and H85 temps near 17C will support high temperatures in the mid 80s (upper 70s along the coast). Dewpoints in the upper 60s will make it the most humid day of the week as well. This comes ahead of the trailing cold front which makes its way through SNE late in the evening Wednesday, into early Thursday morning. The warm, moist airmass ahead of the front will allow instability to build in the heat of the day with CAPE values reaching 1000-2000 J/kg. Bulk shear isn't great at 20- 30kts, but enough that we may be able to get an isolated strong or severe storm out of it, especially over western MA/CT where instability is maximized. Regardless, scattered showers, some of them heavy, are expected given the very moist column (PWATs approaching 2"), convergence ahead of the cold front, and a 25-35kt LLJ. Majority of the shower activity diminishes behind the cold front Thursday morning, but the column is slow to dry out and some small disturbances moving through the nearly zonal flow will likely keep a chance for isolated to scattered showers in the forecast during the day on Thursday. Dewpoints eventually come down to the 50s by day's end and temperatures will be 5-10 degrees cooler, in the mid 70s; diurnal heating will be fighting surface CAA. Friday... We'll finally see the truly dry post frontal air move in by Friday as high pressure builds into the region from Canada. Colder again on N/NE flow; for most locations highs may not make it out of the 60s! Typical warm spots in the interior including the CT River Valley and Merrimack Valley should reach the low 70s. Saturday through Monday... Saturday another low pressure system takes a similar path to Wednesday's, which brings the return of warmer and more humid air to start the weekend. Highs on Saturday will reach into the upper 70s with dewpoints back in the mid 60s and PWATs once again approaching 2". As the cold front approaches late Saturday night into Sunday morning we'll see pre frontal showers spread from west to east sometime on or around late Saturday, exiting by early Sunday. Less instability to work with so not sure that we'll see thunderstorms yet. Behind the front drier air moves in with high pressure keeping the rest of the weekend dry and partly sunny. Looking into next week the GEFS and EPS are both signaling good chances for a persistent mid level ridge setting up somewhere in the vicinity of the east coast. Exact placement of the ridge will dictate what that means for SNE but leaning toward a warmer and drier forecast. && .AVIATION /02Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/... Forecaster Confidence Levels...
