.SYNOPSIS...
Scattered showers across southeast New England will exit the
region early this evening. Otherwise, much of tonight will be
dry other than perhaps a few showers/t-storms this evening
mainly west of the CT River Valley. An approaching cold front
will bring scattered showers and thunderstorms at times
Wednesday afternoon lingering into Thursday. A few of the
thunderstorms could produce damaging wind and local torrential
rainfall. After the cold front moves through Thursday night, dry
seasonable air returns for Friday and the weekend. Another cold
front arrives early next week.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM WEDNESDAY MORNING/...
3 PM Update...

An offshore wave of low pressure was grazing the south coast,
Cape and Islands this afternoon with some showers. This was in
association with an offshore low pressure system. Expect this
activity to exit the region by early to mid evening, as the wave
begins to pull away from the region.

The other concern revolved around a cluster of showers and
thunderstorms impacting New York State. This activity has made
it into Berkshire county and extreme western Franklin/western
Hampshire county, but was beginning to out run the better
instability/deeper moisture. A few showers and thunderstorms may
impact our far western zones into this evening, generally near
and west of the CT River Valley. Much further east than that
the activity should continue to weaken and fall apart given a
less favorable environment.

Otherwise, subtle upper level ridging builds briefly back into
southern New England tonight. This should result in generally dry
weather tonight for the vast majority of the region. A spot
shower/t-storm can not be ruled out, but overall dry weather is
anticipated.

Low clouds and areas of fog will likely overspread much of the
region as the night wears on and low level moisture continues to
increase. Low temperatures will only drop into the upper 60s to
near 70.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM WEDNESDAY MORNING THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/...
* Isolated Severe Weather/Localized Flooding Potential Wed
  Afternoon And Wed Night

* Low Risk For A Tornado Wed Afternoon/Night

Wednesday and Wednesday Night...

Vigorous upper level trough approaches the region from the west.
While a few showers or a rumble of two of thunder can not be
ruled out during the morning, the main concern is from Wed
afternoon and into Wed night.

The approaching shortwave trough will result in deep layer
shear increasing to between 25 and 35 knots Wed afternoon into
Wed night. Although an abundance of clouds may limit diurnal
heating to some extent, dewpoints will be in the upper 60s to
the lower 70s. High temperatures climbing into the 80s will
allow 1000 to 2000 J/KG of Cape to develop. This combined with
just enough deep layer shear will bring the potential for isolated
severe thunderstorms. In addition, Pwats between 1.75 and 2
inches will allow any thunderstorms to result in torrential
rainfall and a localized flood threat. That is especially true
if training occurs over an urbanized area.

Breaking things down a bit more, the CAMs are in very good
agreement indicating a main area of showers/t-storms will
impact much of the area Wed afternoon and evening. The bigger
uncertainty is do we see multiple waves of convection cross the
region well into the overnight hours. It is possible that areas
southeast of the Boston to Providence corridor are mainly dry
until sometime Wed night.

The main severe weather threat Wed afternoon and night will be
locally damaging straight line wind gusts. The guidance is also
indicating decent values of 0-3 KM Cape and modest low level
helicity. 25 to 30+ knots of SW flow at 925 mb is indicated in
most of the guidance. Therefore, there is the low risk for a
tornado when that is combined with the low LCL/s. Initially will
have to watch our interior zones, especially the CT River
Valley where low level backing is often under forecast by the
models. Also, there are hints in some of the CAMs of a subtle
mesolow that may track across the region during the overnight
hours. That is the most likely time we would need to keep an eye
on eastern New England. As mentioned earlier, we will also need
to keep an eye out on the potential for localized flooding.

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...

Big Picture...

Closed low over Hudsons Bay maintains an upper torugh over the
Eastern USA until the weekend. Upper high pressure over the Western
USA builds east, covering the Southern USA by the weekend. The
expanding southern high and Hudsons Bay low create a zonal flow
across the Northern USA during the weekend and early next week.

Heights at 500 mb will be below normal Friday through the weekend,
then return to near normal early next week. Temperatures at 850 mb
will be below normal over the weekend, then trend a little above
normal early next week. This suggests temperatures trending to the
mild side of normal this weekend, then warming early next week.

Forecast confidence is moderate-high through the period. Uncertainty
increases early next week due to differences among the models in
timing the early-week shortwave.

Daily Concerns...

Thursday...

Trough axis from the Hudsons Bay Low remains to our west Thursday,
with Southern New England in a southwest flow aloft. Cross sections
show deep moisture much of the day, but this diminishes by late
afternoon.

Stability parameters continue favorable for deep updrafts...SBCAPE
of 1000-2000 J/Kg and LI at -4 to -7 are two examples...and PW
values of 1.8 inches show plenty of moisture to be converted to rain
as it supports the convective cycle. Thus heavy downpours possible.
Winds at 850 mb around 25 kt, and at 500 mb 30-35 kt...these favor
strong wind gusts. Helicity values, both 0-1 KM and 0-3 Km, are
below 100 most of the day. So the main concerns would be strong wind
and downpours with the greatest risk for strong/damaging weather
over Eastern Mass and RI. This doesn't preclude some action farther
west.

Friday-Saturday-Sunday...

Upper shortwave moves through Friday, but cold advection aloft and
moisture aloft are concentrated over Nrn New England. So while we
should see some diurnal cu, expect most of this activity to
concentrate in Nrn New England. The GFS shows passing off the south
coast and bringing light showers to that region late Friday and
Friday night. This is an outlier solution at this time with the
remaining models showing a dry forecast.

Midwest high pressure builds in at the surface and should keep our
area dry through Sunday. Dew points in the 50s northwest to low 60s
southeast mean a more confortable airmass. Mixing profiles show the
mixed layer reaching between 850 mb and 800 mb and tapping upper
temperatures around 12-14C Friday and 10-11C Saturday-Sunday. Expect
max temps mid 70s to lower 80s during this time. This supports max
temps in the low-mid 80s Friday and around 80 Saturday-Sunday.
Meanwhile dew points and light wind suggest min temps 55-65
through the weekend.

Monday-Tuesday...

Uncertainty continues in timing next shortwave. The GFS brings the
shortwave and associated surface cold front into Southern New
England Monday and lingering through Tuesday. The ECMWF and the GGEM
hold the cold front over Canada most of the period, with showers
approaching through New York late Tuesday afternoon and night. With
these differences, we are going to slow down the arrival of showers
in the forecast until Monday night. This change in timing is common
out at day 6/day 7 and is a good example of the danger in being too
"certain" with a forecast that far in the future.

Forecaster Confidence Levels...

Low - less than 30 percent.
Moderate - 30 to 60 percent.
High - greater than 60 percent.

Short Term /through Wednesday Night/...

Today ... Moderate to high confidence.

Generally VFR conditions, except MVFR to even IFR conditions
across southeast New England at times. This is especially true
across portions of the Cape/Islands where scattered showers and
embedded t-storm or two will be possible. Late in the
afternoon/early evening a few showers/t-storms may impact far
western MA, generally west of the CT River Valley.

Tonight ... high confidence.

Other than a few possible evening T-storms across western MA/CT
mainly dry weather prevails. MVFR/IFR in low clouds and fog over
Cape Cod and the islands will likely spread westward across the
remainder of the region.

Wednesday ... high confidence.

MVFR with embedded IFR in the early morning gradually lifts into
VFR conditions. Scattered T-storms in the afternoon with
greatest coverage across CT and western-central MA. A few strong
storms possible especially in CT and western-central MA with
strong winds and torrential downpours the main concerns.

KBDL Terminal...Moderate to high confidence in TAF.

At 328 PM EDT, Doppler radar was tracking a strong thunderstorm over
Monroe, or 8 miles east of North Adams. This storm was nearly
stationary.

This storm is producing heavy rainfall, with amounts up to 1 to 2
inches. Localized flooding is likely in this area.

Locations impacted include...
Monroe, Charlemont and Rowe.
