.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure wave along an approaching warm front will bring a
wintry mix tonight with some ice accumulation, especially across
the interior. Once the low passes on Thursday morning the
precipitation should taper to drizzle. Another weather system
approaches with rain for Thursday night and Friday. Turning
cold, dry and blustery for late Friday through Saturday evening,
the potential for wind headlines. More seasonable Sunday
through Tuesday. Watching for a potential midweek storm the
following week.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THIS MORNING/...
1250 AM update...

Precip will be tapering off across western New Eng early this
morning but continuing across eastern New Eng. Main risk for
freezing rain overnight will be across central and interior
northern MA, but temps still near 32 across higher terrain in
CT, northern RI and interior SE MA where isold freezing rain
possible. Will be trimming advisories during the next update.

Previous discussion...

Widespread rain across SNE this evening, will be overspreading
outer Cape and ACK within the next hour. Surface temps critical
to ptype and freezing temps common over higher elevations, and
across the coastal plain in interior eastern MA where pockets of
freezing rain likely. Some sleet may mix in near the NH border
where low level cold layer is a bit deeper. Temps will be rising
slightly in the coastal plain through the night so icing
overnight will be mainly confined to higher terrain in MA and CT
and into interior NE MA. Not much icing expected in the CT
valley. We cancelled the winter weather advisory in Kent county
RI and eastern Plymouth county where temps will remain above
freezing. Kept the advisory for PVD-TAN but mainly for areas to
the north for a few hours this evening. Boston also in the
advisory but mainly for western part of the city.

Radar already showing lighter precip moving into western New
Eng. Rain will begin to taper off across western MA and CT just
after midnight, but probably not until daybreak across SE MA.

Previous Discussion...

Front remains stalled to our south. Upper flow is southwest-
northeast and parallel to the front. This is pushing moisture
through NY and PA into Southern New England. Meanwhile, high
pressure centered over Quebec is shifting east to the Maritimes.

Forecast guidance shows cold air damming setting up from that
high pressure and across interior New England. This will
maintain low level cold air across the region, while coastal
areas receive a milder flow off the ocean.

Upper jet is forecast to move across Southern New England later
tonight, with our area moving under the left exit region of the
jet. Meanwhile a 45-knot low level jet will run across the
stalled front. All of this should generate strong lift over our
area tonight, supporting precipitation. Based on temperatures,
expect freezing rain and sleet north and west of Boston, as well
as northwest RI, Northeast CT, and northwest parts of Hartford
County.

Winter weather advisory continues for all but the South Coast.
Best chance of icing will be in the Central Hills and the East
Slopes of the Berkshires...and Northwest Hartford County.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH 6 PM FRIDAY/...
Thursday...

Low pressure passing south of our area will move off to the east
during the morning. This should cause the rain/mixed pcpn to
taper off during the morning...ranging from around sunrise west
to midday Cape/Islands. Low level temperatures still support
freezing rain during the morning rush hour in the Worcester
Hills and Berkshire East Slopes.

Cross sections show broad moisture across the region below 850
mb. Low level winds will continue from the northeast. This
suggests a cloudy day with patches of drizzle. Temperatures will
warm a little, with most places reaching the upper 30s and lower
40s.

Thursday night...

Plains upper trough generates another storm system over Texas,
and guides it northeast over the Great Lakes. Expect another low
level jet to move up the coast later Thursday night. This will
ride over the front that remains stalled to our south,
generating another round of precipitation. At this time the
p-type for this second system looks to be rain.

Friday and Saturday...

As we transition to Friday morning the surface low moves into Quebec
with the mid level shortwave lagging behind, swinging through New
England during the day. Early Friday southern New England sits
squarely in the warm sector with persistent S/SW flow and
rising temperatures, leading to a pure rain event. Rain tapers
off late in the day Friday behind the cold front as the parent
low's dry slot wraps up and into the region. Temperatures
rebound quite nicely before the cold front arrives, expecting
them to reach into the 50s for most locations. The cold front
drops through generally around early afternoon to early evening
from northwest to southeast. Northeast winds behind the front
will bring a quick return into more winter-like temperatures as
cold arctic air spills down ahead of incoming high pressure.
Post frontal winds pick up as CAA promotes efficient mixing down
of a potent LLJ. Winds increase through the latter half of
Friday, peaking overnight and during the day Saturday when we
could see widespread gusts of 35-40 mph. Otherwise Saturday is
dry and cold as high pressure builds in. It is likely that we
don't get out of the low 30s for highs, back into the teens for
lows Saturday night.

Sunday through Wednesday...

Sprawling high pressure sinks to our south Sunday keeping us dry
with highs moderating slightly under W/SW flow in the low levels. No
precip during the day but increasing clouds as a weak wave of low
pressure approaches and passes to the south overnight. There is
potential to get some snow out of this overnight, but model
consensus is low, and there isn't a lot of moisture available so not
expecting much to make it far enough north to impact SNE. As we
start the week skies begin to clear out as high pressure returns and
crosses the region Monday and Tuesday. This should keep us dry
through at least mid day Tuesday with seasonable temperatures,
topping out in the 30s each day.

Looking toward midweek models continue to indicate potential for an
impactful winter storm moving somewhere up or along the east coast.
Plenty of uncertainty given we're talking 6-7 days out but there is
potential for wintry precipitation to return on or about late
Tuesday/early Wednesday. Stay tuned.

Widespread IFR/LIFR with rain redeveloping late evening and
overnight, especially interior. Low risk for isold FZRA over
the higher elevation in northern MA.

Friday...High confidence in trends.
IFR/LIFR in the morning with areas of rain SE New Eng, then
improving to VFR with clearing in the afternoon after cold
front passage. Post-frontal west wind gusts to 30 kt developing
in the afternoon.

KBOS Terminal...High confidence in trends. Widespread IFR
developing. Rain tapers off toward daybreak with patchy
drizzle/fog during the day.

KBDL Terminal...High confidence. Mainly MVFR conditions today
with IFR possible at times. Lowering to IFR tonight as rain
redevelops.
