.SYNOPSIS...

High pressure builds north of the region this afternoon. Sunny
conditions will continue, but temperatures will be well below
normal. Readings will moderate on Sunday, but clouds will
increase during the day with a little rain reaching the south
coast toward evening. A coastal storm will bring rain and strong
coastal winds, with some light icing in the interior late
Sunday night into Monday morning. The storm moves to the
Maritimes Tuesday with high pressure building south of New
England Wednesday and Thursday. A cold front may bring showers
on Friday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...

1 PM Update...

N-NE winds have been gradually diminishing through midday
across most of the region, but continue to see gusts up to
30-35 kt across portions of the mid and outer Cape as well as
KMVY and KACK. Even noting a gust up to 30 kt at KPYM at 17Z.

Skies remain mainly clear across the region at midday. The
northern edge of the cloud bands linger across Nantucket but
should continue to shift S as the ridge to the N expands
southward.

Should see winds continue to diminish through the afternoon.
Looks like temps will top off in the lower-mid 30s across the
higher inland terrain to between 35 and 40 along the coast.

Previous Discussion...

Large 1040 hPa high pres centered across western Quebec at mid
morning. Should see N-NE winds begin to relax as the high
slowly shifts SE into N NY state during the afternoon.

With the very dry airmass in place, will continue to see full
sunshine across the majority of the region. However, noting a
few spotty ocean cloud bands streaming in the N-NE flow
crossing portions of the Cape as well as Nantucket and Martha's
Vineyard.

Still have some gusty winds across the Cape and islands, with a
peak wind of 38 kt at KACK on the 15Z observation, and 32 kt at
KMVY. As the pres gradient relaxes during the afternoon across S
coastal areas, the winds should also slowly diminish.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 PM SUNDAY/...

Tonight...
Strong high pres across northern New Eng will result in a light
northerly drainage wind across the interior. With mainly clear
skies, the stage will be set for a cold night in the interior
with lows dropping into the single numbers and teens. Closer to
the coast, a modest NE wind will result in milder temps in the
20s likely warming into the 30s overnight over the Cape/Islands
and SE coastal MA with a coastal front developing. The
persistent NE flow will result in low level moisture increasing
which will lead to some lower clouds developing over eastern MA
and RI late tonight.

Sunday...
High pres will remain across northern New Eng as coastal storm
slowly lifts north to off the Carolina coast. Plenty of dry air
above 850 mb through the day so expect mainly dry conditions.
Deeper moisture remains to the south. However, shallow level
moisture below 850 mb will continue to increase and expand
across SNE within the easterly flow. Clouds will increase from
east to west during the day as low clouds develop. There is a
low risk for some patchy drizzle in eastern MA late in the day.
Coastal front sets up west of the I95 corridor with highs
ranging through the 40s across RI and eastern MA, but 30s in the
interior.

&&

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Highlights...

* Coastal low affects region Sunday night and Monday:
    - Rain/wind along coast, possible light icing interior Monday AM.
    - Minor coastal flooding possible Monday PM along E MA coastline.
* Dry mid week, then milder with rain showers possible Friday

Main concern is the coastal low which is expected to track offshore
Monday. Global models/ensembles show a more offshore track while
higher-res models bring it closer to Nantucket Monday afternoon.
There are also differences in timing with higher-res models faster
to bring precipitation into SNE Sunday evening, while global models
are a bit slower and hold off onset of precipitation until later
Sunday night.

We are continuing to favor the more offshore track which fits in
better with ensembles and slower onset due to presence of dry air at
mid levels. That said, increasing easterly flow may lead to spotty
drizzle Sunday evening before steadier rain arrives later at night.

Impacts:

* Interior Light Icing:

High pressure north of New England will maintain N/NE flow of low
level cold air into SNE Sunday night and Monday morning as low
passes offshore. This will keep temperatures near or just below
freezing across the interior, especially in the higher elevations
from the east slopes of the Berkshires to the Worcester Hills where
our confidence is highest in seeing some light icing (around 1/10
inch). Temperatures are marginal for icing in the hills of northern
CT as well as the Pioneer and Merrimack Valleys, so our confidence
is lower in these locations, but if temperatures are able to cool a
couple of more degrees than forecast, obviously the potential for
icing will be higher.

In any event, this looks like a minor icing event that will mainly
impact travel late Sunday night into Monday morning. It's possible
that we see some spotty freezing drizzle develop a little earlier
Sunday evening, but we are not yet confident enough that will be the
case.

Closer to the coast, all rain is expected as increasing E/NE flow
brings milder air in off ocean. Coastal front may set up from NE CT
into NW RI and to I-495 in NE MA Monday morning and eventually push
a little farther inland Monday afternoon.

Rainfall totals will be limited by progressive nature of system,
despite fairly anomalous PWATs >150% of normal and strong lower
level moisture convergence, generally 0.50 to 1.50" with higher
totals focused in E MA.

* Strong Winds and Marine Impacts:

Impressive low level jet of >70kt at 925 mb crosses SE coastal areas
late Sunday night and Monday morning. While all of this will not mix
down in E/NE flow, forecast soundings support gusts of 35-40kt,
especially near Cape Cod and Islands with 25-30kt gusts along
remainder of coast and less than that farther inland. It's possible
this could trend a little higher but right now we are more confident
that Wind Advisories will eventually need to be issued for the Cape
and Islands, rather than High Wind Watches/Warnings.

On the MA and RI coastal waters, the expectation is for Gale Force
wind gusts up to 40kt, starting late Sunday afternoon on the south
coastal waters and expanding to eastern MA waters Sunday night.
Winds should fall below Gale force Monday afternoon. Seas should
build as high as 15 ft on outer waters Monday.

* Minor Coastal Flooding:

Fairly decent E/NE fetch combined with several hours of strong winds
should bring a storm surge of 1.5 to 2.0 feet with Monday
afternoon high tide in eastern MA, which is a little higher than
storm surge guidance from ESTOFS/ETSS. Astronomical high tide
is rather high (10.3 ft at Boston and 3.7 ft at Nantucket
Harbor) so this would bring minor coastal flooding to much of
the eastern MA coast including Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard.
Seas offshore of 10- 15 ft are not expected to significantly add
to the impact along coast but may bring minor beach erosion.

Tuesday through Friday...

Once system departs, high pressure will bring dry and seasonable
weather through midweek. An approaching cold front should bring
milder SW flow Friday along with scattered rain showers.

through most of the day, but will lower to 035-050 across E
Mass into RI by mid to late morning. MVFR CIGS push into S
coastal areas around or after 20Z, then will slowly push N
through 00Z. Good visibility. Chance of -RA moves into S
coastal areas after 21Z.

E-NE winds increase along the coast during the day, up to 20-25
kt with gusts to around 30 kt across Cape Cod and the islands
around or after 18Z. Gusts up to 35 kt by around 00Z INVOF KACK.
